Went to my first NHL game last night and I picked a pretty good one: Phoenix @ San Jose. San Jose dominated general play with 50 shots to 26 but Mike Smith was epic and Phoenix got up with a 3-2 shootout win.

After having attended the Swiss league 1-2 times per week all season, it was an interesting change. It's a lovely new stadium the SAP Centre, although there are a few dumb design decisions like some rail bars that block a lot of what otherwise would be good seats. The ice looks so small relative to the European ice and the skills are incredible in the confined spaces. Some of the powerplay work of Couture, Thornton, Pavelski, Marleau and Boyle was incredible. It was amazing they didn't score more than once.

The crowd is interesting. When there is an exciting moment like a goal or a close shot the crowd goes wild and it is incredibly loud. Other than that though, during general play it's fairly quiet which I found surprising. I could really hear every on-ice sound despite being in the top tier. I think I prefer the European crowds which are generally smaller (except Bern) but there is a constant singing throughout. The closest the American crowds seem to get to singing is a chant of "Let's go [insert team name here]"

One annoying thing comes from America's generally awful public transport. The last train waits until after the game, even a shootout, but that's only ~10.30. It's not possible to go out for a beer or 10 after a game and then take a bus or train home, they just don't run late. I know it's America and most people have cars but drink driving? I was craving a drink after a game since I couldn't fathom paying 9.50 for a mid strength beer (and you think the MCG is dear...).

Also I enjoyed standing out in a sea of teal with my yellow Genève-Servette top on, with Couture on the back (one of our lockout players). Got a few questions from interested locals. I generally cheered for San Jose but was hardly shattered when they lost.

Two more games against Buffalo and Vancouver before returning home :)

I apologise to Mr Bolland and all Leafs fans, my fault... ;)

C'mon, man. A broken nose, I would be okay with. 'Whiplash', a little annoyed, but not too bad. But this? Where it's basically Karlsson 2.0 (but with the Leafs medical team, which - might I add, doesn't have the best track record). Yeesh.

So that now leaves Kadri and McClement as our two remaining 'pure' centres. As much as I love both of them (McClement is a huge workhorse - unrivalled work ethic on the PK), it's a little worrying.

Looks like that Kessel-JVR-Lupul line that everyone was fantasising about might come to fruition

Great to hear you're enjoying yourself! The family and I will be in Vancouver in January as an end-of-year-12-family-holiday for myself (youngest of two, so it's a big deal for my folks). We managed to secure lower bowl seats at the Rogers Arena when the Blackhawks roll in, which should be great. Tempted to cheer for the Hawks, but I can imagine at that sort of game it probably wouldn't be the wisest move.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the games!

Not sure the Devils lack of form has much to do with luck, the squad's not very good, lost their two best players for no return and the player's they've brought in don't inspire much confidence to sort things out. I'd be surprised to see them getting out of the bottom four in the league.

Seven periods plus of hockey without hitting the twine for the Devils. 149 minutes and 6 seconds.

Ouch!

So, is the talent in this years draft any good?

Lots of good offense coming through, it seems.
Reinhart #3 looks like he's going first overall.
62 points in 67 games in 2011-12.
85 points in 72 games in 2012-13.
28 points in 17 games so far this season.

You look at those numbers (as well as his above PPG record in international play), as well as his positioning, and you have to assume he'll be on (at least) a third line somewhere (*cough* Sabres *cough*)next year

Toronto takes a point from the Sharks. Wingels scores, Leggo says no goal. Toronto never reviews, replays show it was a good goal.

Isn't that more Mike Leggo's fault than the League's? I mean, they'll review the replay if it's asked of them, but Leggo never called for a replay... *shrugs*

You'll be in Canada, you should be safe. If you were in Philadelphia, I'd say not to cheer too loudly for the away team, but most Canadian crowds are friendly. They might give you a bit of shit, but nothing to be worried about.

Great stuff, melbournemartin. You make a good point about the crowd and general atmosphere being different. Coming from watching games in Europe, it'd definitely be an eye-opener, as it seems they're more like soccer crowds over there.

The main thing I notice every time I see a game is simply: How much better does it look live? You can see plays develop, you can see things clearer and small things are magnified. Hockey translates horribly to TV, much like footy does, IMO.

Nice to know there's someone who can help Buffalo out next year :po_O

The buffoons in Toronto don't need to be called by the referee to make a decision on a goal. They can spot a mistake, make a call to the rink and get in contact with the referee at the next stoppage of play to inform the referee of a goal.

If, as in this case, the buffoons in Toronto do not notice the mistake before play resumes after the next stoppage then it is too late to give a goal.

Good to see the Charks not making any excuses, really should have beaten the lowly Sabres in 60 minutes.

Two San Jose games down and 2 shootout loses! And to Buffalo of all places!

In Europe the crowds are segregated. In some cases (big local derbies) you are not allowed in the stadium as an away fan outside of your section. Heck, for Geneva vs Lausanne you even have to take a special security train/bus. In one sense I find these restrictions frustrating, and I miss the freedom in Australian sports and also NHL games. I also enjoy banter with opposition supporters. I think that segregating fans amplifies the hatred. Switzerland is a small country so going to away games is relatively easy, and we act like dickheads because we know we are in a separate section with lots of security. Without that security, I doubt we'd act the same.

On the other hand, this does give a certain atmosphere. America is a huge country so getting away fans is hard, but there were plenty of Buffalo fans in San Jose yet all scattered around. If they were all chanting together in one point it'd be interesting.

I'd love to see the Bruins play in Pittsburgh for a playoff game, for example, I imagine it'd be crazy. The style is still different though. Here is an interesting video (albeit biased towards Europe). I strongly disagree with the top comment though, saying that European fans are much more passionate. They aren't, they just show it in different ways. American crowds are still much bigger than almost all European crowds, and not always in bigger cities.

As for your second point, I completely agree. In Geneva the hardcore fans are behind the goals and the net and have a pretty crappy view. Sometimes I get a better seat though, and have had decent ones at the NHL games, and it really is different. I think they zoom in too much in NHL coverage. It's a bit like Channel 7 with the footy, adding in these disorienting zoomed views.

Interestingly Swiss hockey TV coverage is generally zoomed back, with quieter on-ice sound effects and a more consistent camera angle. I find this a lot easier to watch.

Might suss just how friendly the crowd are before I raise my voice :p

Nothing against the Canucks, I just find Kane and Toews more exciting

So I was watching the replay of the Habs-Blues game last night and damn, so that's what actual goaltending and defensive play looks like....:p

How much did you have on the Pens?
Nothing.
I was going to. Thought we were going to get smoked.
Wasted money on Melb Cup. Otherwise it would've gone on the Pens.
Although I was more leaning on over 5 goals though since I thought they'd score a shit load.
Just happy we slaughtered those fukers.
Best win of the season. Probably our only real deserved win.
And I'm glad our defense is finally back. 16 goals against in the last 10 games.
Thought we were going to be leaking goals like Collingwood for an eternity.

Friendly Chicago fans last night. :D

Check out the beer "spill" from the girlfriend at the end.
