North need genuine elite players if we want to compete for a flag. We missed the boat with Goddard this year. Reports suggest we will have money available next season. As a result we need to be aggressive in the free agency period next year.

Our target next season should be Ryan Griffen. I am not sure if he is out of contract but he will be eligible for FA.

He will be 27 next season, he is a genuine elite, outside midfielder who would complement the likes of Swallow, Ziebell and Cunnington.

As a FA, he will cost us nothing in terms of giving up players or draft picks.

We should be prepared to overpay ($2.4m - $2.8 for 3 years) to get him to the club. Hopefully the attraction of success in the latter part of his career whilst the Dogs are rebuilding is appealing.

Isn't Wellsy a free agent next year?
I hope we secure him early as no doubt many clubs will be circling.

Daniel doesn't strike me as the sort of bloke that could have his head turned.

I'm pretty sure Ryan Griffen signed a three year extension in the middle of 2012.

If there is a very good player available, then go for him. If there are only middle of the road types, then don't bother. Very simple strategy.

Edit: From the HS -

The silky ball-winner has recommitted to the club for a further three years, tying the deadly right-footer to the kennel until the end of 2015.

Griffen isn't an option.

I have much love for Ryan Griffen. Would excel in a good side. Under appreciated. The Dogs would throw everything at him to stay.

Operation get Griffen thread needs to be made.

Has anyone seen the list of our players out of contract at the end of next season:

"The Roos have nine players out of contract next season, including Daniel Wells, Drew Petrie and Michael Firrito, and emerging stars Jack Ziebell, Shaun Atley, Kieran Harper and Sam Wright."

That's where the money is going to go. No-one thinks the money isn't going to come from elsewhere for Atley and Harper? Even Wright. Not sure how much is going to be left to throw a million a year at someone else's gun.

The space will be an issue when Dave Swallow comes out of contract at the end of 2014.

We may need to have $800K+ to push him in to the PSD if GC don't play ball.

In my most humble opinion North won't be a FA player until we get to 4th , 5th on the ladder. Once that happens they'll come-a-knockin'. I believe we've the squad to get us that far now. And also we still have our fair share of 'unknowns' on our list.

Who else is there in the 2005 draft? I think we would be better served looking for multiple mid level talent, top liners are going to make an absolute fortune. Thats why Goddard costs so much. Strange to say but the Ritchmond model is better than the Essendon one.

We must.

We have to be very smart with our salaries or big clubs will keep topping up their guns through FA and be competitive for a long long time.

Lets be honest, we are not a big fish club, the attraction for a player to come to us right now would be the potential success this team is about to have.

While it is our window we have to do everything we can, because if we fail to land the big names and maximise our chances of winning a flag then the boat will sail off very quickly. We have to use this to our advantage, it's our window. Teams like collingwood will always attract big names, unfortunately we don't have that luxury.

The time is now.

It'd be nice to get that "big fish" next free agency but to be honest with the talent that comes out of contract next season, we should be looking to lock them down into long term deals if we've got all this cash to spend. Echoing previous posts we probably won't be in for the bigger name players until we are well and truly entrenched in the 8 and competing for top 4.

We didn't "miss the boat" with Goddard, I dare say we just didn't want him.

Goddard and Essendon is a match made in heaven. Tossers of a feather flock together.
We were very interested until the price topped $800k a year and then we cooled somewhat.

Yeah I don't see it absolutley necessary to sign a "big name" in order to be in flag contention.

Our homegrown philosophy seems to be working and unless they're a specific hole to be filled eg. Lake at the hawks why throw money around willy nilly

Yep, my preference is that our homegrown talent become the "big names". :thumbsu:
