Isn't the Cairns game majorly designated by the AFL anyway? There were links posted to articles saying Gillon may use the dogs pulling power for Friday night games instead and someone else will go to Cairns instead.

Hawthorn v Sydney played in round eight in 2015.
Hawthorn v Freo played in round three in 2014.
etc etc

That tradition last happened in 2009, and happened in 2007 and 2008 also.

The AFL today announced it had commenced the process of detailed consultation with its broadcast partners, clubs, the players, venues and other key stakeholders in relation to the construction of the fixture for the 2017 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
AFL General Manager – Clubs & AFL Operations Travis Auld said it was expected the fixture would be completed by the end of October, as per the schedule of recent seasons, and clubs, players and all interested parties would now be asked to lodge their key requests within the next month.
The 2017 Toyota AFL Grand Final will be played on Saturday September 30 while Mr Auld said the AFL was still considering the date for the opening week to the season, and the number of weekends that would be used to complete the 22-round season.
While the season structure and start date would be locked soon, Mr Auld said for the purpose of all groups preparing their responses, the AFL had indicated the season opener could be Thursday March 23, with the 22 rounds to be played across 23 weekends up to the end of August, before a bye weekend on the eve of the finals.
“A standard round, as part of our agreement with the Seven Network and Foxtel/FOX FOOTY, will continue to feature one Friday night match, two Saturday afternoon matches, one Saturday twilight match, two Saturday night matches, one early Sunday match, one Sunday afternoon match and one Sunday twilight match,” he said.
‘Other key considerations, in no order of importance, for the construction of the fixture will be – AFL and AFL Club contractual obligations with venues; Player welfare; Travel considerations for AFL Clubs; Maximising attendances and fan engagement; Continuation of “blockbuster” matches and “themed” rounds; Maintaining consistency of match start times where possible; Balancing second round match-ups – the ‘Weighted Rule” as per 2014, 2015 and 2016; Expansion market objectives and Rewarding on-field performance.”
The key dates for the 2017 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, while still subject to change, have been indicated as:
