AFLX Squad Announced

The Gold Coast SUNS have announced a 14-player squad to fly to Sydney for this weekend’s inaugural AFLX Tournament at Allianz Stadium.

Touk Miller will skipper the side in his first opportunity to lead a SUNS outfit after the 21-year-old was promoted to the leadership group last season.

A strong pre-season on the track sees both Jack Bowes and Brayden Fiorini named in the squad, joining Miller in the midfield for the new & explosive format of the game.

In exciting news for SUNS fans, Sam Day will make his return from injury, almost one year to the day he suffered a dislocated hip which ruled him out for the entire 2017 season.

Day will look to play an important role as the only key position player named in the side.

Four Gold Coast SUNS Academy graduates will take to the field with Brad Scheer, Max Spencer and Jesse Joyce to join Bowes at Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The squad also boasts explosive runners with Josh Schoenfeld, Darcy Macpherson, Kade Kolodjashnij, Alex Sexton & Sean Lemmens all named.

Nick Holman and Aaron Young will pull on a SUNS guernsey for the first time after joining the club during the 2017 Trade and Draft Period.

The SUNS will take on the Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans in the pool matches at Saturday’s tournament, with a spot in the grand final up for grabs.

SUNS AFLX Squad

11. Touk Miller (c)
6. Alex Sexton
8. Brayden Fiorini
10. Kade Kolodjashnij
12. Sam Day
15. Aaron Young
18. Brad Scheer
23. Sean Lemmens
29. Jack Bowes
36. Josh Schoenfeld
38. Jesse Joyce
39. Nick Holman
43. Max Spencer
44. Darcy Macpherson

Solid line up. Some random thoughts:
Stick Sam Day in the forward 3rd and watch him clunk some marks.
Excited to see Kade hopefully fully fit again as well.
Will be nice to see some new recruits in Young and Holman in the team.
Touk as captain is a nice nod.
Team doesn't seem overly quick which could be an issue.

Will be nice to watch some footy again, even if it is this weird format.

Not sure quick is the most necessary ingredient for this game ?
It requires non stop running at high intensity for 10 minutes per half - sustained endurance is the key. (eg Whitfield, Scully from GWS)
Our list contains most of the Suns best endurance athletes.

You might say there's a lot of "prove it" players in this squad. I have no idea what the rationale is as I don't expect half of these guys to feature in the Round 1 side. Stoked to see Touk as Captain of a very young team and some "sophomores" in Bowes, Scheer, Spencer, and Macpherson getting a chance ahead of the veterans. Young and Day are the oldest guys! In fact, you could pick a very bloody competitive 22 out of the players left out of this squad.

I don't think anyone really knows what works best in this format. I read somewhere (maybe on here?) that one of the melbourne side (Carlton?) had run a bunch of drills and the "tall' group came out on top in AFLX match sims. then you've got other sides like WCE who quite obviously dont give a s**t about AFLX as a comp as 11 of their 15 man squad have never played an AFL game and of the other 4, 2 have played less than 10 games.

Haha West Coast have never given a shit about pre-season comps, no matter what the format... I remember a while back a couple of preseason cup winners went on to win the spoon that same year...
I also remember one year Aaron Hall stuck about 13 tackles in a preseason game, actually against West Coast... so what ever happens over the next 6 weeks or so, its best to just ignor it.

Pre seasons always been about giving your kids a run around. Trailing different positions and kids fighting it out for a certain position

Would have liked Powell in this. Matches are like 30 mins right? Can't see endurance being too important
Disagree - try running and playing football without pause for 10 minutes - with limited interchange.
7 players on a rugby field - no out of bounds - continuous game. Doubt many will still be sprinting after five or six minutes......
This game involves a lot of what Suns do worst - continual transition running and manning up under pressure.
It's why the team consists of our better endurance runners from the time trials (minus Barlow and 2MP). Day and Spencer have been added for specific roles.
Guess we'll see if I'm correct......
(Game time 20minutes - 2x 10 minute halves.)

I was thinking there would be lots of short burst with unlimited interchange and it being pre-season.

Like I said we'll see - its all totally new .
Interchange is unlimited but I think interchanges will be difficult to perform in such a short term with only 7 players on the field at any one time....will be difficult getting on and off unless you match your immediate opponent doing the same (further case for endurance if you can stay out there longer than him).
Even when a goal is kicked - it immediately comes back into play....no respite at all..

Yeah it's hard to say. It's also hard to tell with some teams lineups. The dogs apparently haven't even played it and don't care about it whatsoever

Maybe Suns want to win? Dew is one of only a few AFL coaches bothered to coach his selected team. Bulldogs / West Coast obvious examples of not giving a toss.
Think GWS have picked a solid team - while Sydney want to play as many as possible (they must have been the reason squads were extended to 20)

Does he have the size yet to be ableto match it with other AFL players even at this micky mouse level? But I agree it would have been great to see him with plenty of space. Hopefully we see him at some point over pre-season.

Actually kind of interested in this one now. Not in terms of the spectacle, I still couldn't give a f**k about AFLX and based on our squad the club doesn't really care either, but seeing Bowes, Fiorini, Scheer and Schoenfield, plus Kk and big Sammy back (can't believe he is back not quite a year after the injury, there was some talk that he would struggle to/never recover), and seeing Holman and Young for the first time is going to be good to watch. Plus Touk stepping up as skipper.

As a first year coach Dew would want to coach his players at every opportunity. Both coach and players need to develop the relationship and understand each other. Other clubs not so much.

On a Fantasy note how is Jack Scrimshaw coming along? Has he had a decent preseason and will he play early on?

Thanks and good luck for the season.

Seriously...looking at the Full list of Bulldog Players in AFLX, first thing I said was WHO??! if we don’t flog them we have major ISSUES. Our side looks pretty solid!

Footy's back!

Suns up 16-1 after 2 minutes. Fiorini and Young both dobbed goals from outside 40m, only 6 for Fiorini because he marked inside the arc. Commentators only talking about Dogs because they are flogs.
