I personally don't see the downside of a skilful display at any time. Especially when skills need to be a major focus for us.
Skills are a focus but at this stage of the pre season not many teams would be 100% skill wise. It’s will take a few hit outs to get back into game mode and that’s when we need our skills. Having aLittle hit out during pre season means nothing but for identifying who looks the goods for our starting 22 and trying players in different positions

I'm so not asking for 100%, but I don't want more of the same. Skills are not just there to be turned on when round 1 comes along.

There are some nice images up already on the club website. Check this unit out!

Been on the Fyfe eating and lifting weights plan.

He's going to knock a few seasoned AFL players on their backsides this year.

That’s true. The last hit out/dress rehearsal before the real stuff is when you want to see skills and improvement. A lot of work to do before then though by the sounds of it but we can’t hit the panic button yet

Apologies for the length of this post guys.

I'll leave it to others to comment on the overall game - it was really windy and the skills were poor, bordering on crap at times - but this was the first hitout for the year so not unexpected. For me there were some really positive signs, but also some ominous signs that we still chose to move the ball sideways and backwards in defence, we still played without any forwards for large parts of the game and we tended to bomb it long to packs too often. For me, the positives outweighed the negatives, but I'm a glass half full person, others will have seen it differently.

I'll give my thoughts on the players as I saw them, happy to concede I watch with a filter and some of my observations will be biased!

Hayden Ballantyne - Did not play.

Griffin Logue - Continues to impress. Big, strong, fast and a penetrating kick. Missed a couple of marks he should have taken, but was not Robinson Crusoe in that regard.

Brandon Matera - Looked really good, fast with a strong kick and can hit targets.

Sean Darcy - Did not play.

Adam Cerra - Looked good until he copped a knee in the back early in the game. Came off looking pretty sore, but I'm sure it was nothing serious.

Danyle Pearce - Good game from Danyle, tried hard all day and his voice was one of the most prominent. Still sprayed a lot of kicks but far from the worst out there.

Nathan Fyfe - Class above anyone else out there today. If he can stay injury free he will give the Brownlow a mighty shake again this year.

Andrew Brayshaw - Looked promising, but seemed to hurt his shoulder late in the game. Played on, but you could see his shoulder was really bothering him. Will get AFL games early on.

Bradley Hill - Typical Brad Hill game, ran all day, presented an option more often that anyone else. Kicking can sometimes let him down, but hey, we can't all be Fyfie!

Michael Walters - Good game from Sonny, without being a real star. Seemed to play a lot through the midfield and did well. Another with good voice.

Tom Sheridan - Did some good things. I know I won't be popular saying that, but he is fit, fast and starting to get some size about him. Just don't play him in defence please!

Mitch Crowden - Young bull who will never get tackled around the neck because he doesn't have one. Some great tackles, kicks well and takes good options.

Harley Bennell - Did not play.

Nathan Wilson - Really good game, his kicking is going to be a major offensive weapon for us this year, but he is also a pretty good man on man defender.

Ethan Hughes - Didn't notice him too much, but the things I saw he looked strong and composed. Expect a big year from him.

David Mundy - Typical Dave Mundy game, probably not at his peak yet, but everything he does reeks of class.

Hugh Dixon - Didn't do much today, but I think has a lot of potential.

Darcy Tucker - Solid in defence, and some of his kicking was very good. Didn't stand out, but sometimes that's a good thing.

Connor Blakely - Looks fit, strong and keen. Tried to do too much once or twice, but I love that he is prepared to take a man on and create something.

Matt Taberner - Probably worst on for mine. Didn't take any contested marks, and when he did get free and take a mark he ambled back off the mark and took too long to move it on. Tried in a few ruck contests and was easily beaten. I would love to see him live up to his potential, but I didn't see it today. Had an robust discussion with Nat Fyfe at one stage, probably not a great career move.

Joel Hamling - Looks great, and for mine the bet marking defender out there. Judges the ball so well in flight and has great hands.

Shane Kersten - I thought he looked good today, covered a lot of ground running from defence to attack. No superstar, but maybe he will find a role as a tall link up player?

Cameron McCarthy - Not his best day, but he tried hard and did some good things. Would love to see him taking more marks, but it was very congested out there today. He is sporting a pretty lit new haircut.

Tom North - Did some really nice things, one great intercept that led to a goal. A couple of times he got caught trying to get onto his left when there was no space, I suspect he may not have a right foot.

Alex Pearce - Solid down back, and starting to really get back to some good form. Didn't get beaten in the air that I saw, and with Hamling, Logue and Hughes we are starting to get a pretty solid core of tall(ish) defenders.

Ed Langdon - Didn't nitice him too much, but what I saw he looked to be moving really well and he seems to be tackling with real intent this year.

Lachie Neale - Solid in and around the clearances, but not a standout for mine. Not saying he was bad, I just didn't notice him a lot.

Brady Grey - Superstar, what else can I say. He was really hard at the ball and a few guys didn't want to get in front of him. Marked well, ran hard and broke lines but his kicking today was average at best - and I'm Brady's #1 fan. Just seems to get over-excited at times, and needs to ratchet it back a notch, but will have a very good year if he stays fit.

Lloyd Meek - This kid showed a lot. Jumped over Sandi several times in the ruck, and some of his hits around the ground left players feeling sore and sorry for themselves. Didn't notice him taking any marks, but our second best ruck on the day.

Aaron Sandilands - Looking as fit and fresh as I have seen him for a long time. Ran hard around the ground, roved one of Meek's ruck knocks, and took some nice marks. With Sandi, Darcy and Meek we finally have some coverage for our No 1 ruck position this year.

Stephen Hill - Did not play. Hagdorn reported he was injured, but I asked him and he said he is just a bit tight and they didn't want to risk him. Ran laps and looked OK.

Cameron Sutcliffe - Vying with Tabs for worst on for mine, although I may have missed something. Didn't se him get much of it and when he did he gave it up a few times.

Lee Spurr - Solid, but not overly impressive. He didn't do too much wrong, but he just doesn't seem to create anyhing when he gets the ball, rather looks to make it someone else's problem.

Michael Apeness - Looks a long way from fit, and didn't really impact in the forward line. Went into the ruck at times and as the relief ruck I thought he was best out of him, Cox and Taberner. I think he is at least 3 - 4 months away from even looking at an AFL game.

Brennan Cox - Took some good marks around the ground and has great hands and judgement. Kicking still an issue, but he makes himself dangerous in the forward line. Pretty sure he played in attack all day.

Michael Johnson - Didn't play much, spent a lot of time looking on. When he played he was solid and he reckons he is timing his run to the start of the season perfectly. Missed a couple of simple kick, but again, so do most of them.

Luke Ryan - Toss up for mine between him and Wilson who will be the most damaging backman. Both great penetrating kicks and both make good decisions, but for min eluke gets the nod because he is an elite intercept mark. Out defence is shaping up really, really well.

Sam Switkowski - Did not play.

Scott Jones - Did not play.

Bailey Banfield - Don't want to write the kid off, but for mine he is a clone of Matt Priddis. Big bodies, can find the ball, but has only a left foot and that's not even great. Still could become a handy player, but for mine him and North are vying for the same spot and North looks a bit better all round.

Stefan Giro - Surprise packet of the game for mine, the little Adelaide kebab. Ran hard all day and presented an option almost as often as Brad Hill. Not sure if we will ever see stats from this game, but for mine he would be the leader of the first years' possessions. Kicking is not great at this stage, but he is young, probably nervous and hopefully can improve that. The other players all seem to love him which is not a bad thing.

Ryan Nyhuis - On and off a bit, but did some nice things when he was on. No star, but good handy depth in defence.

Taylin Duman - Coming along nicely. Not spectacular, but tall enough and fast enough to at least halve most contests. At one stage Fyfe tried to body him under the ball but Duman held his ground and got a fist into it. He is one of the guys I think could be a surprise this year.

Luke Strnadica - Did not play.

The skills as others have said were pretty poor at times with a lot of the players seeming to not be able to judge the breeze. There were a lot of balls going over the head, on the full, and long kicks hanging up in the breeze. With the way the game opened up after half time, it wouldn't surprise me if the 1st half the directive was to be a bit more defensive and play 'the percentages' with the 2nd half being more offensive minded with license to run and carry.

Kersten's goal kicking was good but his kicking around the ground was horrific.

Wilson kicked a great goal on the run from about 60m although he did have the help of a strong breeze.

I loved what I saw from Meek today and he is definitely going to be pushing Darcy for that number 1 ruck role in a couple of years time.

Brady had a great game and found a lot of the ball. Giro was in a similar boat finding a lot of the ball in the 2nd half.

Was about to right a player by player summary of the game but Dudley beat me to it and has done an excellent job of his report.

Giro definitely got a lot of the ball and did a few nice things, but as said his disposal let him down at times. However, showed that there is enough there to work with.

Meek as said, definitely gave a solid account of himself going up against Sandilands. Will be one to watch develop.

Walters was his usual self, gave plenty of voice on the field. Fyfe his usual self - Classy and bullish. APearce is looking fit and ran out the match well, not beaten as Dudley said. Brady looking good and should be in for a big year if he stays fit. Logue seriously impressed me with his size.

Some notes from the game..
Tabs and Fyfe got into a wrestle during the third quarter and went to ground. Tabs was brought straight off afterwards.

Langdon went for a good run down the ground and showed his pace before pulling off a sideways kick to Kersten who goaled.

Wilson kicked an excellent goal from 55m+ after a handball received. Best part was the kick seemed effortless and cleared the goals easily.

Apeness managed a goal in the last quarter, however didn't do a lot and seems a fair way off.

Crowden laid a good tackle from behind on BHill in the last and got rewarded with a free kick.

North handballed tight under pressure on the boundary just before the end of the game and Neale and Mundy were both quick to let him know that he needed to kick the ball long in that situation. Some good teaching from them both.

Tabs, Kerstan, Nyhuis and Johnson rotated as the sub for the white team who had one extra player after Cerra received a knock.

As said, skills weren't flash but did improve as the game went on. Scoring was nearly non existent in the first half, with plenty of easy shots missed likely due to the breeze, but still concerning. Scoring did open up in the second half which was pleasing to see. Not bad for a first hit out, but definitely work to be done skill wise.

Yeah, sorry about that FreoBraddles :D

Thanks for reminding me of that Langdon passage, that was all class - the kick across the body to Kersten was almost Stevie J like, a thing of beauty!

With 22 new kids, it doesn’t surprise the skills were woeful. We play AFLX next week and then straight into JLT. Will be interesting to see how we go. After the previous two years, a poor start to the year could play on their minds. We need to at least be competitive in AFLX and JLT to start developing a winning culture. Thank god for Peels success lately!

5 weeks down, 3 weeks to go until the return of one of our most talented (hopefully).
