So Cal replied.

Not sure I'll get a response to the follow up

It’s funny as there draft wrap he admits that the Blues told him that they trumped Richmond. Completely different to his first take on the matter.

I back our recruiters. According to the club, ALL draftees were ranked and we chose from this ranking, AFL ready or not.

We don’t need a false dawn to sell memberships, we don’t need to rush kids not yet ready and we don’t need to choose to fill a gaping hole.

All our draftees are raw, talented, eager to learn and have great character ....... a perfect fit for where we are!!

They have 17 other teams to dissect and wouldn't give a nutsack about who we - the reigning premiers - choose. Headless chooks, both of them.

We chose high ceiling players who could be anything in time.

This strategy does not compute with these two self confessed draft guru's.

They are only interested in the daftees who are going to star next year or the year after.

We however are in it for the long haul.

w***ers Without A Clue.

Thomson Dow was next, as Richmond grabbed the speedy midfielder at No.21 to close out the first round. The Tigers liked his pace and his quick hands reminded them of dual premiership star Shane Edwards, who spent draft night in the Richmond recruiting box after working with their scouting team at different stages during the year.

Don't doubt any of that, but I see as much of Zac Williams as I do Shane Edwards - not bad which ever way you slice and dice it if he can live up to being a little bit of either!

Those of us who remember his real name from the tiger talk newsgroup can search him on LinkedIn.
He was at freo and later Collingwood. I think he's back to statistics work now.

Weaver was passionate about drafting and watched a bunch of junior footy. His write ups were good. His strike rate wasn't any higher than any other draft aficionados though. Totally flipped out about Riewoldt getting drafted by us. He was a bit too up himself for my liking but you have to credit him for putting in the hard work.

weaver was good. We used to tee of on a lot of stuff but it was healthy. A legend like me not many left these days.

There are many other attributes that I would prefer over “height” in midfield.

Richmond have convinced me that clearances are overrated. We were 18th in the competition from scoring from stoppages. We won two flags without having a “big bodied mid”. Plus clearances are usually just hack kicks forward.

How many of the best midfielders in the history of the game are over 190cm?
What Dustin Martin isnt a big bodied mid? Caddy not a big body or Ross for that matter?. You dont have to be over 190cm to be a big bodied mid.
The better most influential mids going around are indeed in the 185cm plus range but they have good size to go with it.

Me too.

I remember there was a guy called blackjack on there who was always stirring up trouble. I wonder if he ever made it here.

David the guy who ran it with weaver ended up running for the board. He quit supporting Richmond in a massive tantrum when we drafted Ben cousins.

I’m a big believer in drafting best available, but characters willing to learn, improve and develop are equally important.

You only have to go back to 2014 to see how rookies, through perseverance have become premiership players.

looking back on the 2014 draft there really was not a great deal of talent there

#12 - Corey Ellis ............ Better Choice would have been #14 Jake Lever
#34 - Connor Menadue ............ #43 Mitch McGovern (yuk)
#52 - Nathan Drummond .......... #54 Ed Langdon
#67 - Dan Butler ....................#Rookie Charlie Cameron

Richmond recruiting manager Matthew Clarke believes talent will continue to be poached from the improving northern academies.
The Tigers plucked Lions academy duo Noah Cumberland and Will Martyn with successive picks in the third round of last month’s National Draft with Brisbane opting not to match the bids.
Brisbane had previously matched Essendon’s bid on fellow Lions academy product Keidean Coleman six picks before the Tigers’ two selections.

“The academies have worked and it is spilling out the talent, it’s great for us,” Clarke said on the Talking Tigers podcast.
“In previous years, before the academies, they sort of played in division two and weren’t attractive to watch, but their footy is really good to watch now – both New South Wales and Queensland.
“Realistically if they produce ten really good players a year they can’t take them all anyway so there are opportunities for other clubs if you’ve done the work.”
Clarke said he was “surprised” the Tigers landed both Cumberland (Pick No. 43) and Martyn (No. 44) without the Lions matching. The pair got a taste of senior footy in the NEAFL and were part of Brisbane’s premiership triumph.

Will Martyn captained the Lions academy this year.

Cumberland had spent time out of the elite pathway over the past two years but stepped back into the Lions academy this season.
“We were a little surprised that he got through,” Clarke said.
“(Cumberland has) pace, real power and leg speed so he plays mainly as a forward and a little bit on-ball, but he’s physically tough and smashes in.
“He likes to grab the ball and go with it.”
His teammate Will Martyn captained the Lions academy side and Clarke was full of praise for the youngster.
“He’s probably one of the more professional kids you will ever come across in terms of working on his game, rehab and diet.
“He can play multiple roles, he’s a really good runner, uses the ball both sides, he’s got good hands.”

Richmond’s first pick on draft night, Bendigo Pioneers product Thomson Dow, was a surprising selection to some but was the Tigers highest ranked player left on the board.
A home visit from Clarke and fellow recruiter and former Tiger Will Thursfield in the final week before the draft ultimately sealed the deal.
“It was one of those ones where we walked out and Will asked, ‘have we drafted him already?’” he said.

“He can probably play inside and outside but he can also play forward as well. He can play some centre bounce long term but (also) can play some wing – some of his good stuff for Geelong Grammar was playing deep forward.”
Meanwhile, Tiger draftee Hugo Ralphsmith has already impressed at his new club with a strong time in the club’s three kilometre time-trial on Saturday.
“He came out and ran really impressively in the (time-trial) … right up the front,” Clarke said.
“I can see him playing as a marking forward or on the wing outside, he’s got good wheels and a big tank so he can push up and back all day hopefully.”

This is so logically sensible especially pick 40 plus.

Once again, the tigers lead the league in smart recruiting

Yep.All about 2yrs and beyond along with the best kids outside the traditional states.

We have Ross, Balta, chol, Stack, Naish, RCD, CCJ, Graham, McIntosh, Turner, English and Higgins to come into the the side next year that didn't play in the GF.
Add Pickett with a full preseason.
We certainly did draft for three years down the track. Not 2020.
When any club takes any 18 19 yr old regardless of where in the draft, without question they draft for the future.
The average number of players who went to each club in the nd alone was 4.3.
