I’d play Long first definitely.. Not sure if Parker is first 22 if all players are available, but will play games this year no doubt..

Dean Kent showing anything?

Been watching last years highlights in preparation for this year. The ONE thing that we absolutely need to focus on improving this season is stopping opposition momentum. The majority of our losses last year, we were actually in the games until a lapse of concentration and inability to stop the other team from creating goals rapidly.

Round 2 v North: in the game until 3 qtr time, 11 points down. A 5 minute patch to start the final quarter had them out to a 30 point lead, insurmountable at that point.

Round 3 v Adelaide: in the game until the 3rd quarter where in the last 7 minutes of the quarter we let the lead slip from 13 points to 40.

Round 6 v Hawthorn: in the game until the 4th quarter where we allowed a 3 goal lead turn into a 7 goal lead within 5 minutes (from the 7 minute mark to the 12th).

With the acquisition of Ratten for his tactical nous, and Hannebery for his on-field experience, we should HOPEFULLY be able to quell these this season. If not, I’m afraid it’s going to be another long year, because we all know that in every game, both teams have at least a 5 minute spell of good fortune (showcased by us fighting back on multiple occasions to give a respectable score line, the away game to West Coast being a prime example).

But if we do manage to deal with these patches with controlled defensive play and smooth, fast transition from attack to defense (which we looked extremely slow at doing last year, almost as though we were unfit), then we can see ourselves in many more close games, and hopefully victories.

Yeah I clearly remember the Essendon game, which we were in until they kicked 4 quick either side of the main break, the Richmond game where we were in front during Q3 and then fell away Q4, the second GWS game where we were dominating in the first half before they kicked multiple goals, the bulldogs game where they kicked 10+ straight to win by 6 goals etc.

Our biggest problem was that, as you say, we had no defense against a momentum shift against us - therefore we saw margins blow out very quickly in the opposition’s favour

I think some of it is belief with a young group, they seemed to panic at an opposition run on. They literally stopped the stuff they had been doing to get ahead in the first place.

Exactly, it is the one thing that is preventing us from being a consistently competitive outfit. Fitness would be a factor, skill would be one, but the main one would be being able to switch tactics fluently and with our new people in the club, we should become better at doing that.

Personal bests in 3km time trials is pretty helpful too

Bruce was on SEN this afternoon and he said he looks good.
Was that Josh Bruce
Bruce Macavany or
70's pr0n star Bruce the Moose from the
X Rated classic Mighty Moose takes Kentville??? :moustache:

probably safe to rule out the 2nd option!

I think that was part of the reason why we tried to bring in that Sydney flood the backline crap last year, to try and absorb/prevent any big opposition runs. Unfortunately we made it too hard to score ourselves and it was only a matter of time until the opposition piled on goals anyway!

While YouTube-ing I’ve come across some highlights as well and one of the games I watched was that Carlton one in early 2017 when funnily enough all the talk was are we too ballistic as a team.

So:

2017 - too ballistic
2018 - complete opposite

Hopefully this is the year where we find that balance. I bang on about this but the best form of defense is getting the ball into your attack and locking it in there.

Sinclair is out of contract at the end of this year so he is another who has something to prove - he needs to have a good year to get a boost in his pay package , same goes with Billings and Gresham.

A interesting one is Jack Newnes will be a RFA at the end of this season .

Last year on field we looked almost leader-less. I don’t think we realise how depleted we were of leadership with Bruce & Robbo our. Add those two, Kent who is a mature player & Long who I believe to be showing strong leadership qualities. Long is definitely an alpha amongst his peers & has already shown strong leadership qualities with his work in the community.

Either way i hope he has a good season.
I don't particularly want him to go, because while he's not a standout player, he's the kind of good player i'd have loved us to have available for selection in 2010. If he does go for reasonable money we potentially get a second rounder.
Hope he gets back to his 2017 form.

**** Purple.

Looking forward to the intraclub tomorrow.

Am assuming that Billings, Membrey, Gresham and Steele probably won't feature given they are playing tonight.
Has there been any comms around this?
Unless they sit out tonight they won’t play but will be there is what I was told Monday

I know its one play but jesus a ******* chaos ball kick out wide to a 4 on 1 doesn't fill me with confidence, fluke it paid off. With no context of the drill they're doing its hard to be too critical but **** me i hope i don't see too much of that this season.

compare it to the vision coming of hawthorn and richmond. we look atrociously haphazard agggaaaiiinnn

People might not rate Bruce, but he's a leader amongst the social groups down there. He's a big alpha-male and has the presence of an old school leader. He's a big lad type so probably not the first choice for the leadership but maybe having a kid will balance him a bit and make him take more of a responsible role.

Yeah when up and going the Bruce man has got a fair bit of come with me lads about him!
By rights a fit focused tall fwd line of Bruce, Paddy and Membrey should be a pretty potent set up
Especially with all the pacy little dynamo's crumbing at their feet, of which we seem to now have a plethora of!
