We low ball everyone.

I hate the implication we lowball people. We offer them a fair wage.

The player salary cap is around $13m and you can't tell me that an AFL team with a primary list of 40 people would have one player realistically worth 1/10th of that amount as a fair amount.

I think the point is that a lot of teams have to over pay.

Sam Frost should be our #1 target. Other than Frawley who is a year to year prospect at his age, Brand is our next best Key Defender. He can't hold his spot and is ranked #57 in that position (AFL player rankings).

Frost is 26yo, is probably on the move and is capable of being one of the leagues best key defenders at the right club IMHO.

If a player going to choose the Demons over us purely of the back he is getting more 1 season on his contact then so be it, he should be confident enough to back his body and win a 2nd contract with us. There is a reason why we have had recent success the culture and system alone should be enough to attract players.

The market is getting alot more competitive and you are starting to see the smaller clubs get more imaginative with there contracts, north over payed last trade period to secure players, this year stkilda look like they have 3-5 players nominating them.

i'm sure and hope the club will review it's contract offers with players it considers a must. J.Eillot wouldn't fit into this category

Yeh, some teams **** it up for us. You get Player A who is average see Player B who is slightly above average get paid a mill, they then think "If he's worth that, I'm at least worth $700k.". We think "We only pay Player C, who is elite, $800k. You can have $600k or go and get ****ed!". Player A then goes to another club who thinks "Holy shit, you want to play for us? Sure, here's $700k!".

Same deal with Trade worth. Gold Coast has ****ed it up for everyone taking Weller for Pick 2.

the teeth gnashing by some supporters over the Hawks not paying some average footballers far more than an avergae wage/contract is amusing.
People seem to forget that the existing players at Hawthorn are watching and waiting for their turn of the pie. If you set bad precedents you will pay for it in the nxt 3-5 years whihc can set you back even further. And don't forget with the ever changing AFL rules of player movement, HQ are just as likely to announce next week that free agency will be after 6 years from next year. We would be in a good position if we have looked after our contracts properly.
The same thing happened with the clubs that rushed to Etihad with the promises of gold. However, it takes real management nous to know when to run with the pack and when not to follow the herd.

I am totally okay with the Hawks not overpaying/over contracting players that do not deserve it.

I agree which is killing the market, the times are changing thou when you look at the Tigers& G.w.S model they pay mega bucks to 4-5 stars and basically fill the rest of the team with role players.

Compared to the old Geelong & Hawthorn motto of spreading the load over 10 or so players.

I agree. Roughly put, for every player you pay $600k, you have to pay two others minimum wage. You can only do that for players in select circumstances, so you want to be careful that the guys you are paying around twice the average wage are going to be the big difference on your list.

Breathe people....it is still some time away from the end of trade period, some 17 days.

The Club are hard at work looking how to improve the list. A lot of gossip from Trade Radio as time to fill with no prospect of news coming out.

Patience.

Wait, what? You can't add a new counter. We were counting to the start of the trade period and now you want to count to the end? This is worse than waiting for Christmas morning.

Elliot makes us instantly better, Walker doesn’t.
I'm not just interested in making us instantly better. I'd much rather sustained success which is what I think Wrighty is pushing for. I like most wasn't anti-Elliott but it had to be for the correct terms. A 3 year deal would've been fair but I get the feeling he like others seem to be doing lately is use the HFC to get the deal of close to the deal they want from either the club they're at or another one to give them a ridiculous offer. The other thing to factor in is I want players to 'want' to play for us not to just 'settle' for us. My gut instinct tells me that Elliott really doesn't want to leave.

Missing out on Coniglio and Elliot are huge disappointments IMO. Especially when we are now left fighting over the dregs like Butler, CEY, Frost and Greenwood.

Even if we are in a win-now mode I would much rather we take our picks to the draft and play young players, than bring in average players like those mentioned. Obviously the best option is to trade in a gun (if possible) and use our draft picks wisely.

If you follow the EPL then you can equate the remaining potential FA signings to the Wenger/Arsenal banter era signings, overpaid average players that won't be able to shift.

On pure talent, Elliot is ahead of Frost, no doubt. But for need, I reckon Frost is the better option. He can hold down a key defender position, for which we are very light. Elliot's position has some coverage with several promising guys coming through.

Heard we”d cooled on him last week. Seems to be wanting to get more years than we’re prepared to offer.
Hawthorns keeping its cards close at this stage. Hopefully a potential name comes out in the next few days.
I would rather we heard nothing and then went bang on day one.

Happy to miss out on players if it means maintaining our wage structure. Lets not forget the bad old days of overpaying good average players like Dutchy Holland while being mired to the bottom half of the ladder. Dont think Elliot is a good enough player to demand a wage to put him above a number of better players already on our list
