ATP/WTA 2020 Australian Summer

Looks like Adelaide has a great WTA list. So glad Adelaide has a proper event now instead of the joke that was WTC.

Adelaide is by far the big winner out of the change to the Australian summer.

Personally despite getting some big names I felt like the Hopman Cup was getting a bit tired. It went into a shambles at times once players withdrew.

The Brisbane tournament was very strong but helped by the timing as much as anything. You had big names on outside courts with no coverage so this helps spread the matches around a bit.

I understand it's not possible but I still don't get why Perth and Sydney lost women's tennis. It wouldn't surprise me if they transition to a WTA Cup in coming years as well.

Alternatively Auckland while unlikely might agree to move their tournament to line up with the mens and free up a space for a WTA tournament in Sydney or Perth in the first week

Either way I think this year is more a transition year and we might see some future changes.

Girls will learn quick to avoid Adelaide weather the week before a slam :fire:

Mens is interesting as there is one less tournament this year as they used to have a 250 in India.

ATP Cup will suck up the bigger names but the lower ranked guys will have disperse to challengers for grand slam warm up. Think there is usually one at Happy Valley in Adelaide and one in Noumea or somewhere like that. They should get better fields.

Elizabeth in Adelaide gets a Challenger round as well.

Adelaide has a shade roof which will help the top players.

As far as Challengers go there are a few changes. Noumea is the first week as usual now along with Canberra (if it goes ahead).

Canberra should get a good field for the reasons you said.

Bendigo is the week before the Australian Open.

For the Australian Open this year I might buy one day in Melbourne Arena. I know you can get in on a ground pass but that can be stressful sometimes.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, do they always have the roof closed in Melbourne arena or do I need to worry about shade? For some reason for that particular court I thought they always closed the roof.

The roof will be open in Melbourne Arena (unless it's raining or roasting)

It is a very good court regarding shade though.

The new court 3 with the shade roofs look amazing.

Quite scary to think play in the ATP Cup has started today. Starts off with a banger, Moldovia v Belgium. Started off well with the Romanian athlem played for Moldovia.

The Challenger due to be held in Canberra has been moved to Bendigo due to smoke. So there will be consecutive Challenger tournaments in Bendigo over the next two weeks.

Good decision given even one or two days been cancelled because of smoke will cause the tournament to go into into disrray with it being combined and the men having a 48 draw.

How overdue was that shade for Court 3. I presume the old court 2 will be done at some stage.

Kokkinakis out for the entire Australian summer due to health concerns.

I don't know how many times he keeps trying to come back, last week there was an article saying he was fully healthy and ready to go, really unfortunate for him

Had a w***er on my Facebook feed bang on about how crap the Belgium v Moldova tie is.

I asked him if he was watching the game. He said he wasn’t, but he didn’t know the players names, so assumed it would be crap.

His comments made him look like a right idiot in the opening game. Now he just looks like a complete tool. The opening game in this tie has been amazing.

Interesting fact about the Adelaide Tennis tournament next week. The players will use the 3 AFL size changerooms at Adelaide Oval (2 for men, 1 for women) during the tournement. For those interstate Memorial Drive is next door to Adelaide Oval with an entrance and the AFL changerooms are down the Memorial Drive end.

Whoever has the short straw of using the AFL visitor change rooms are in for a bit of a walk to Memorial Drive - mind you it's probably on par to the locker rooms at a Grand Slam to the most outer of courts anyway.

It's also not too dissimilar to how teams in curtain raisers at the old Sydney Football Stadium used the cricket change rooms at the SCG.
