I want to know this "IF" is, and I'll tell you if I think it's good.

I'm curious what your "IF" is.
Ffs you are a negative person. You try and shut down anything anyone says like what you say is the absolute peak of human knowledge.

You’re in the hypothetical thread. ‘If’ is gonna come up a lot. No one needs to run their hypothetical scenarios by you to be approved.

Hartigan and a bunch of late draft picks ain’t going to get us anywhere. Also saving cap space to spend it at the end of next year is risky, because there’s no guarantee we will land a high quality free agent.
Sorry WWSD this sounds like a we can't win either way post.
How often do we here about needing to hit the draft, or let's throw everything at a free agent or we aren't a destination club anymore.
Not saying that you have said any of the above but IF we do have an in principle agreement with any of the out of contract free agents then it would make perfect sense to not load up our salary cap forward of season 2022.
A nod and wink from a up coming free agent sounds like forward planning with very little risk attached.
At least we won't have to have a Collingwood style fire sale to fit all the pieces under the cap.

Heres my idea would love this
Josh Dunkly . Dogs to essendon for pick 7
Adam Treloar . To dogs for pick 7 and 14 since picks are useless to them.
Jack Gunston to collingwood for pick 7 , 14 and Tom Phillips. Hawks give Gunston and pick 24 pick 46...
Hawks then trade pick 4 and either 7 or 14 to crows for pick 1 most likely 4 and 7 .
So Hawks get Tom phillips , Logon Mcdonald pefect smith and Gunston replacements and have pick 14 before downie

this falls over big time at 7 and 14 for treloar

dogs don’t “not need” the picks, it’s that their best use for them this year is to either cash them out for picks next year, trade them for more draft points this year, or spend them on players

giving Collingwood 7+14 for a player they are actively trying to get out of the club is horribly stupid of them. At the absolute least, they’d be asking for the pies first next year (since the pies “don’t need it”), and then a hell of a lot more again

Two firsts and a first choice winger for a 29 year old Jack Gunston? Come on man..

that's what it's going to take for us to consider trading him, which is why he won't be going anywhere

lol don’t worry about those free agents next year, most likely all staying with their team bar Merrett who will end up at Carlton most likely. We aren’t a destination club for any of those players unless we pay them huge $ which we don’t do. Load up on Treloar Phillips make the 8, then go after a big name FA

We traded out Croad, Hay and Thompson. We did not try and match bids from the Dogs for Suckers and Doc. We let Brisbane have Birch. Dogs would have paid overs for BB. Pies will pay overs for Gunstan.

At some stage we will have to make something happen.
Looking at each of those cases in isolation gives a different perspective. The team make up to when Suckers and Doc left is very different to now.

Croad was definitely one case that would be compared to now. There would be an outpour of emotion in trading Gunston even though Croad was younger. With the key difference being that Croad was never going to be captain or setting the standard for our club. It has to be a very favourable deal before we consider pulling the trigger on the idea. And that is why I am comfortable with only grabbing the obvious bargain and will be content with just going to draft with Hartigan from this period. Would like to snag a small pressure forward but if not then we will have to draft one and pump games into them.

As much as people need reminding that we’re not trading Gunston the club needs to be reminded we are Not in the premiership window.. Unless something happens today or tomorrow it’s another year where we should have been more bold with our list management, and weren’t. I think Gunston is a fantastic player, and only enhanced his reputation this year but he’s one guy on our list that will get us a good return and the Pies have what we need and are desperate for him.. If they would be open to moving their first this year and next as they likely get swallowed up by academy and F&S bids.. those picks would be a real asset for a rebuilding clubs like ours but as Graham Wright said we’re not in the habit of trading best 22 players for draft picks...

I really dont believe that the Pies would be offering anything near that for Jack. And I believe that is why our team see value in keeping Jack.

Sometimes the best play is to do nothing. It aint sexy, it aint fun. Anyhow two days to go.

I don't think taking our picks to the draft is a disaster like some others seem to.

There is no free lunch. Whether we're 'going hard at the draft' or bringing in best 22 talent, you have to pay. With picks, players or cap space, you have to pay.

If Collingwood hadn't brought in Mayne and Wells on 500k and Beams on more than that plus trade value, there's a good chance they wouldn't have to sell off best 22 players that want to play for them.

Phillips on his terms or Treloar on his contract could easily end up being that for Hawthorn.

This is also already the best draft hand Hawthorn have had since, what? 2006? I'd hope some of the 3rd and 4th round picks move because we won't use all of them but the alternative now would be trading Gunston, which I don't like at all. There's a lot of talent on our list in the 26-29 year old range that would be wasted by a complete bottom out taking multiple good first round picks over the next few years.

i mean we have a top 5 pick

i actually don't see how people can't find a reason to get excited when we have the highest pick we've had in like 15 years? I'm super pumped to see who we get, how they perform next year and to watch the development of Worpel, Scrimshaw and Day next year. Even if we're still bad it can't be worse than 2020

Merritt end up at Carlton? They’ll barely be able to hold onto Cripps next year. If they don’t play finals again why would anyone go there. The cap must be starting to really fill up by now

Look, I trust the club but I am confused this year.

Can someone please explain to me why we would not talk to Stephenson? Or Higgins?

Both players with talent who are potentially available. They may never be this cheap again.

We say we are keeping our core players because we are still in the window. If we are in the window, why are we not looking to improve by adding more players?

We need to improve our forward line, and either or both of these players could do that. Both now and for the future.

So why are we not at least having a look?

We may have. Who knows, certainly not every interview and query plays out in the public eye.

Stephenson is on medication for a heart condition, and Higgins never ever wanted a Hawthorn move.

Stephenson has met with North who have committed to him if he wants to come. I'd suggest that means they're willing to either pay Stephenson more or are willing to take on more of the salary from Collingwood.

Just guessing, of course but it would be consistent with other approaches from North.

I think this year (and maybe next) is a year of correction for salaries. The impact of COVID on the AFL finances means that list sizes and future salary cap just won't be as big as previous. Clubs, like Collingwood, are hitting a wall this year with other clubs possibly staring down the barrel in coming years. Player managers can see the writing on the wall as well so are trying to push best deals this year as well (hence Phillips trying to maximise value).

IMO, Wrighty is sticking to the pay structure to ensure we don't end up in the same hole.

Cripps is signing a long term extension once the Salary cap is figured out
