IF true that's not good and could have a negative effect on the playing group
not sure anyone ever wants to go. It is footy. Different lists different places.
Rayner signed and he lives with Witho still?

Walker seemed close to all the guys and move on.
Just footy now.. people move all the time.
I know contracted vs out of contract.
Although AFL a contract just means you get paid that many years now. Not you stay at the club that long.
Look at Treloar bends over so they can fit other guys in now pies want him goneski.

Ben Keays was close to them as well........it's hard to see some of them go, but it has to be done at times unfortunately.

Witho is a circumstance of a top 4 team, trying to improve. Hard, but that is footy. You can bet he has had a couple of adult conversations with Fages & co, and the end result will be fair to all - just maybe not everyone's preferred outcome.

Whilst Treloar is a long ,long shot I would love Fages to have a good yarn to him. Come to the best chance you have of winning a flag, live with your family, and out of the fishbowl. Come to where you will be happy. But you are not worth the money you are on - compared to the rest of our list. The door is open, but you have to make a sacrifice.

Yep, and the team he's going to is also vying for a top 4 and trying to better their position..

That's not Lester at all. He absolutely deserves two years and should get it.
I don't know, he has really only been very good this year, if we sign a 2 year contract and he goes back to his usual playing ability then it is another list spot. The below quote, l know he was only joking, but there is a reason he was only getting 1 year contracts. He is probably in that 17-23 spot imo. Also could lose his spot to Payne next season.

“I’ve been joking to the boys that I only sign one-year contracts to keep myself hungry,” Lester said.

If it's true that Witherden doesn't want to go, and it's true we're paying part of his salary and it's true we're getting pick 60ish back then I can't fathom that list management decision.

Surely has to be something missing.

Paying part of his salary.

Misworded, but suppose I also subconsciously assumed people understood AFL clubs don't cover 100% of opposition player salaries.

Briz is a very matter of fact type of guy.

What I don't understand about Witho is why he has been pigeonholed as a defender right from the start. He hasn't been given any opportunity to play further upfield and was originally played back to take kickouts because of his kicking skills. I don't see why he hasn't been tried on the wing or half forward where his penetrating kicking could be used to bring the ball inside 50. I know people say he is slow but speed isn't everything, and there are several others in the team without a lot of pace who don't get the same criticism. I think Birchall and AhChee have been ordinary at best this year, apart from one or two games, and to throw Witho out to keep those two in the team is bewildering. With Starcevich likely to move into the midfield in the next year or two and Birchall,Robbo and Rich getting near the end it looks like there will be a few spots available for Witho to take and to lose a player like him with his skillset and at his age is bizarre.

This offseason I have noticed Keays and Squizzy in pics so they are not lost to our guys.......friendships endure.

I'm reluctant to give Lester a two year deal because there's a moderate chance he drops out of the best 22 by the end of next year. There's a reason he's gone on repeated one year contracts and because he had his best year this year doesn't mean he's going to have that best year every year here on out.
Ala Robbo

Who would you move out of the midfield to accommodate him? I personally can't see him as anything other than a half back with decent foot skills.

Yep, I'd call B.S on that... he's contracted..if he doesn't want to go doesn't have to and can hold us to his contract

depends on list sizes now unfortunately. Look at Stef :(
I think Lester took his chance this year and I give him 2.
Although if AFL cutting again next year we cannot have everyone signed.

A year in defence done him a world of good know each week he be playing the same role.

I have Lester, Adams and Payne going for the one spot and backup to Dizzy/Andrews.
So if no one injured like Adams again
there be 2 playing in the VFL East coast cooler or whatever they call it
Lester can also fill in anywhere he is needed.

I say some of these choices like Witho comes down to we signed everyone then COVID taking spots away.
I am sure at least 12 clubs would be in the ear of Payne's manager already offering the world.

Keep in mind, the guys running the club now are pretty top notch in terms of interpersonal skills & people managers.

If it turns out that we have decided that a player who is contracted for another two years needs to be moved on, it will be done in an open, professional & as much as possible compassionate manner.

Contracted vs non contracted, meh, pretty much just means that he'll receive the money we guaranteed him. He won't be out of pocket.

This all works both ways guys, players with years to run on their contract want out all the time, this is no different.

As long as it's handled professionally, I've got no problem with it.

You think Payne's manager getting a few calls
Also be looking at our last two drafts and kids not getting a game as well.
2nd last 2 years not gifting games so people will target our depth
Squizy, Culter, Walker and Keays playing in different colours this year.
Could be Witho and Martin next year. Cox prob go home to the west.

Just part of the cycle.
Rocky just finished his house and went.. Pretty sure Redden still has a place in QLD.
fewer and fewer one club players now.

If the lions are paying for some of his salery and only accepting pick 60, it means the club pushed him out of the door. Poor form and if he becomes a great player at least we know who to blame. Fagan and Noble. I'm not a fan of this at all, and that's all there is to it.
You promised not to waste your energy yet you’re back to carry on about a trade that hasn’t happened with terms that haven’t been decided.

I guess so just have bad memories of players being paraded around the Carlton facilities back in 2009. Which lead in part to the G H 5 debacle.

Probably doesn't help that this trade & situation is unfolding at the same time as the Treloar one. Very confident it's being handled much differently.

But where we are as a club now, and the people in key roles, is nothing like where we were in 2013.

Hard calls get made all the time in business, all you can ask as a supporter is that the hard calls get made & acted upon in the right manner. Which clearly they weren't for our club in those dark years.

The game changed long ago . Loyalty only goes as far as your ability, durability and necessity to the team takes you . All the players know this before they start.

Witho rightfully got himself a good contract and he'd know exactly what his options are.
