How can it be a straight up salary dump when we are paying a significant proportion of his contract?

Define significant. 100k is significant but is potentially 300-350k less than we would be paying.

I think you need to take "significant" with a grain of salt. He was on a not unreasonable contract with us. West Coast wanted him to take quite a bit less (obviously), so there was a huge gap. We will be paying a "significant" part of his new contract which will be significantly (see what I did there ;)) less than his original contract.

Oh well, good luck Alex, he'll enjoy playing in front of full houses at one of the best clubs in the land than the fairweather bandwagoners that occasionally show up at the Gabba.
Why are you even a fan of this club if you're going to constantly throw shit at Queenslanders? Piss poor attitude.

Spitballing numbers, if Witherden was on $400k and West Coast was only going to pay $250k (fire sale!) we could be chipping in as little as $50k and that's 20% of his new contract - I'd call that a significant proportion.

I wouldn’t really consider 100k significant in the way it is being portrayed.
If it was only 100k I am fine with that.

Not sure what was a worse move CEY last year or letting Witherden go for nothing so Birhcall can continue to be a traffic cone down back?
Well said. Bring in CEY and Birchall who offered pretty much SFA and have no longevity at the expense of a guy that has a contract and wants to be there and will still be playing good footy when these guys are long gone. Add Cockatoo (2 games in 3 years) who we reckon will do more than Witherden and Hinge (3 games in 3 years) and its looking like a masterstroke of list management.

Reminder

Keep it civil. People are allowed to express their opinion - interact with them based on the opinion, don't starting throwing insults in any direction.

And in case it carries any doubt, I've had to address both sides of the divide already on this.

Well at least Ben Brown wasn't our's. A player a couple of straight kicks off a Coleman last year goes for a second round pick this year. That's one of the weirdest fallings off of a cliff I've seen.

I suppose we shouldn't have bothered with Linc McCarthy either with how few games he'd played in the seasons before he joined us, then?

It’s a trash deal. Understand it’s freeing up a list spot, but regardless of whether he was in our team for much of this year, he’s still a good young talent. He’s viewed as a replacement for Hurn, but I don’t see Birchall, Rich or Lester being long term prospects given age and Starc, Bailey and Ahchee are likely to move into the midfield. Also not sold on AhChee. Understand the need for list spots, but he’s not the player I would’ve let go, certainly not with 2 years left on his contract, paid a portion of it, and accepted a lot below his trade value for it. A rare stuff up for the current administration in my view.

If we don't get one of the Bombers 6, 7 or 8 tonight I still think we'll look to do a live trade on draft night if a player we really like falls to around the 10 mark.

On face value these trades are dreadful. It can only be due to salary cap with Witho. Birchall offers next to nothing these days. He can't move. Dylan is right in pointing out our rucks are diabolical. Smith as backup? O'Mac had a great year but was destroyed by Hawkins.

I disagree on Daniher though. It was clear we needed a key target up there. Hopefully we can get him fit, would make a huge difference.

I'm not sure it happens in a non-COVID affected season, to be honest. Weird event in a weird season.

Reminder that we lost witherden because of daniher. He better work out, because if he doesn't. Oh boy. I'm lucky I will be moving to Europe with my girlfriend, so I won't have to witness this backfire.
Source?

This is sad but look at it this way -
1. He’s a young bloke on a middle aged salary
2. Has weaknesses that prohibit his ability to improve the team
3. Is essentially a role player that would only expect pay increases - 2/3 others that can play and don’t detriment the team in his role
4. Has had a prolonged taste of best 22 action and now, understandably doesn’t want to go backwards

Perfect storm.

Not true in the slightest. Please don't state such thing as fact.

This can be reasoned / sugar-coated all you like.

Horrid deal.

The current administration have done a wonderful job recently with recruitment, retention etc. They have also had the plaudits because of it.

However it must go both ways. To lose a decent player for next to nothing, whether it is for salary space, or list spots (even if we do lose a couple of spots we were predicting with COVID) is poor list management and has to be called as such.
