Given Newnes has played 130 of the last 132 games at AFL level I am comfortable slipping him in front of Gibbons but even if you simply add Fisher and Dow to your previous list you are up to 11 players which is enough to fill all the spots in the 22.

And again, my opinion is diminishing Gibbons, simply raising up the quality of our 25 from last year.
Mate, I don’t thinks many people care about your opinion on Gibbons. He had a great year last year, won a lot of fans. Stop putting ceilings on players, maybe this is his break out year who knows? Your last 10 posts are just sad.

Only got to stay for an hour so.

Arrived around 10 and saw the second quarter of match sim, Jack Martin and Cunningham in the middle looked a dynamic duo. Martin laid a belter of a tackle and took an excellent intercept mark across half back.

Eddie Betts was absolutely on song and everything he touched turned to gold, brushed his man off easily in a one on one marking contest and went back and dobbed it, also crumbed a goal nicely at the other end and made a really impressive smother. Was a real stand out.

Paddy Dows sideways movement through traffic was exceptional today he kicked a beauty where he gathered the loose ball right near the forward 50 boundary and somehow managed to weave his way through numerous defenders and slot it home, he also kicked another goal from 40 out and hit Finbar on the chest after winning the centre clearance (training drill) and steaming away. Brilliant from what I saw today.

Thought Darcy Lang deserves a mention did some nice things he also kicked a nice crumbing goal where he won the ball and beat several players before kicking the goal, not quite as good as Dows but still a great contested get goal.

Finbar dunno if he has the wrangers curse and is the target of bullying or the players have a genuine affection towards him. Whenever he does something good it’s “Finbaaaaah”.
Just little things like like when Walsh was asked who he’s hero is he said Finbar. Charlie Curnow said something similar last year.

Anyway he made a nice smother on the mark against BSOS ( livid with himself afterwards) kicked a goal and crashed into the goal post going for a grab. He seems quite unselfish looking to give it to the better option.

Docs going to slice open some structures like watermelons with his kicking back into the corridor this season, should see plenty of it with Teagues philosophy.

Relax. He is perfectly entitled to his opinion that Gibbons isn’t in our best side.

He’s hardly alone on that front.

Thanks for the great write-ups Harker and windows! A couple of more general questions about the style of play rather than players...
  1. Who played on Betts?
  2. Who kicked the goals and how many?
  3. Did we do anything different in our kick-outs to last year or still similar approach?
  4. Was our play down the wings/outside of the ground like last year or did we play more through the middle?
  5. Are we still playing on or we a little bit more measured in our play?
  6. If there was a weakness in our play today, what was it?
  7. On today's showing, would any of the possible best 22 players be putting up their hand to demand a jumper round 1? Eg, Dow, Gibbons, Willow, LOB, Newnes, TDK?

The consensus appears to be this is our best pre season since the 1990s.

funny you say this Jezz. I was thinking back on it earlier (and I know you’ve been around these fan sites as long as I have). But my recollection is that we had some really happy training reports around about the time we drafted Bowyer, Bannister, de Luca et al. Perhaps in the pre season where we won the summer comp (NAB?) and then managed a wooden spoon in the regular season? 2005 maybe? Anyway, my recollection is the training reports back then were as positive as they are now. But time fades memory of course.

Gibbons has a nice combo of endurance, smarts and ball-winning as a half-forward which most of those guys don't.

I'd let Stocker simmer for another year in the VFL until he can run out a football game, so he's out of my considerations.

Haven't seen enough of Newnes to make a judgment.

O'Brien has been impressive and is close to a lock on the wing depending on the next month or two.

Silvagni's lack of continuity this pre-season is getting a little annoying.

Fisher and Dow have improved heaps since 2019, which is fantastic.
If I can ease your pain a little: he’s flying. His fitness will be all time high come round one.

Not compared to Willo, Stocker or LOB - no real penetration in his kicking and went at 64% DE last year.

Perhaps not, but they've got pretty elite skills. I like Gibbons as an all-round package. Can win the ball. Runs super hard. Good skills both sides. And contributes on the scoreboard. Who really knows, but I suspect he'll play ahead of Willo and Stocker. And may play ahead of LOB. Not really all that fussed. I like them all. In fact, I like most of the players on our list these days.

Apologies if Harker has answered.

1. I think a few. Newman at one point. Betts just Bettsed him.
2. Dunno
3. I didn’t focus on it. Other than move it quickly it didn’t feel different. It was the second kick that was interesting. Felt like they came on board if they could (but not stupidly so) a bit earlier than I recall. Was a really nice balance.
4. Cutting back in slightly earlier from the back half I feel.
5. Balance! Nothing looked stupid today. If it was ‘on’, then they came inside.
6. None
7. Dow maybe. Gibbons wasn’t amazing today but I think he’s maybe round one. Newnes ahead of LOb on today. Willow maybe. TDK no way- despite doing ok in hitouts.
