JC Tretter continues to call out league over wristbands for vaccinated and unvaccinated players

Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2021, 7:54 PM EDT

Browns center and NFL Players Association president JC Tretter previously has written about his concerns regarding the practice of some teams to use wristbands on the practice field to distinguish vaccinated from unvaccinated players. On Thursday, Tretter spoke about it.

It’s just kind of a nonsensical idea,” Tretter told reporters, via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. “They say they need a differentiator between unvaccinated and vaccinated players. We already have a differentiator. The unvaccinated players need to wear masks. No other sports leagues use any sort of scarlet marking or helmet decal or wristband because they know it’s not necessary and the teams know who’s vaccinated and not vaccinated. . . .

“So what it really comes down to is the NFL wanted to put a policy in place to try to shame unvaccinated players publicly about their status and make that known to everybody on the field, and that shouldn’t be the case because it’s unnecessary. We all know who’s vaccinated, who’s not and it doesn’t need to be a scarlet marking on peoples’ helmets or wrists.”

The Browns aren’t doing it. Coach Kevin Stefanski explained the reasoning for it on Thursday.

“It’s on our lanyards when you’re in the building,” Stefanski said, via Ulrich. “As you know, we’re not dividing the team over this issue. And I’ve been pretty clear with the team.”

“The Browns don’t need it,” Tretter added. “Again, we all know who is and who isn’t [vaccinated], so it’s not really needed. And I don’t know why some teams are doing it, and I think players should ask their teams why they’re doing it because, again, I think it’s unnecessary.”

Some teams are doing it because the NFL deferred the issue to the teams, and because some teams think that this one extra bit of distinction will persuade unvaccinated players to get vaccinated.

Na man this aint the hill to die on.

Just dont be a campaigner get the shot.

I do imagine in about 4 weeks we will see a bunch of greivences filed against the NFL from bubble players who get cut because they were too stupid to get vaccinated

2 weeks till the HoF game. and 1.5 weeks till Hard Knocks. I wonder how many Dallas players will be outed as unvaxed on Hard Knocks or if that forced a few to get it

Preseason flying...1 week to the game.

Preseason flying...1 week to the game.
so it is. Ill still end up watching it and still bitch about it being 4th string vs 4th string.

Unless some dumb campaigner paints the field with the wrong paint again and makes it too dangerous to play. Or is that only a thing for Green Bay since its happened to us twice in the last few years. the HoF game and a game in Canada where the field ended up being 80yds because the endzones were unsafe to use

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly reports there has been "limited to no outside work" for JuJu Smith-Schuster in training camp.
Smith-Schuster has almost literally been begging for more outside reps, but beat writer Mark Kaboly hasn't seen it since pads went on, save for "individual goal-line work." It's just as well for fantasy, as Smith-Schuster will be funneled cheap PPR looks over the middle of the field. For real life, Smith-Schuster wants the boundary reps to increase his free agent value after his market tanked last spring. You can't always get what you want.

The Athletic's Vic Tafur believes Raiders DE Clelin Ferrell could "have a hard time winning a lot of playing time."
That's "let alone a starting role." It would appear Ferrell has fallen behind each of Yannick Ngakoue, Maxx Crosby and Solomon Thomas on the depth chart. Per Tafur, coach Jon Gruden "almost forgot about Ferrell" when talking about the Raiders' defensive line on the first day of camp before "(catching) himself." “Certainly, he’s going to be competing,” Gruden claimed of Ferrell. The No. 4 overall pick of the 2019 draft already had his playing time dialed back last season, clearing 50 snaps only four times. The Raiders are simply killing their chances of building a deep 53-man roster with awful early-round selections.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Jalen Reagor failed the Eagles' conditioning test on Wednesday.
As did Dallas Goedert. Reagor also picked up "lower-body tightness" in the process. Via sources, Jeff McLane reports Reagor "wasn’t physically or mentally ready to pass the test" following the murder of a childhood friend. The Eagles believe that unspeakable tragedy has affected Reagor's "readiness and performance at the start of camp." Reagor is on the spot following a disappointing rookie campaign, but he is far from the first player to fail his initial conditioning test. He still has plenty of time to get in a groove before Week 1. Goedert's failed test was reportedly the result of misunderstanding the instructions for the workout.

The Washington Post reports third-round WR Dyami Brown has been featuring in the slot during the Washington Football Team's training camp.
It could be as simple as the Football Team wanting Brown to get some early reps at a position he rarely played in college, but it also comes amidst reports Curtis Samuel might stick on the outside in Washington. It's hard to say with 100 percent certainty what is going on since Samuel is currently on the PUP list. Adam Humphries is also an option in the slot and has extensive experience with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Brown was an absolute game breaker on the outside in the ACC. It would seemingly be unwise to stick him in the middle of the field full time, but increased versatility is never a bad thing.

Tyreek Hill on Usain Bolt: “He’s old, he’s washed up, and he can’t see me in 40 yards”

Posted by Mike Florio on July 30, 2021, 3:22 PM EDT

It’s the race that we’d all love to see, but that will never happen. Usain Bolt vs. Tyreek Hill.

A day after Bolt boasted to Pat McAfee that Hill would have no chance, Hill fired back.

“Usain Bolt got out of the game for a reason, right?” Hill told reporters on Friday. “He’s old, he’s washed up, and he can’t see me in 40 yards. Hundred-yard dash, yes, that’s what he do. But 40-yard dash, according to this, Usain Bolts, you cannot see me.”

Bolt begs to differ, pointing to the time he showed up at the NFL Scouting Combine and ran a 4.22-second 40. It happened at the NFL Experience in Indy, and in fairness to facts it didn’t look like a 4.22. (Watch for yourself.) Still, Bolt is as fast as any human has ever been, and even on the brink of 35 he presumably can still move like few can.

It would be fun to watch, but the safest bet between Hill and Bolt is this specific outcome: It will never happen.

NFL Insider Mike Silver reports the Colts are "bracing" for Carson Wentz (foot) to undergo surgery.
Silver adds that Wentz's injury involves "a bone and a ligament," suggesting the 28-year-old will undergo surgery in the near future. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Wentz is currently en route to see noted foot specialist Robert Anderson in order to establish a "firmer timeline" for his return. With the organization merely "taking solace" in the fact that there’s still six weeks until Week 1, sophomore Jacob Eason (Indy's current backup) and sixth-rounder Sam Ehlinger will get all the reps they can handle over the summer.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll expects D'Wayne Eskridge (toe, PUP) to recover in time to appear in a "couple of preseason games."
That's good to hear, but there are only three exhibition tilts now, and the Seahawks' first one is in just 16 days. Eskridge has been sidelined for well over a month. This is an absolutely critical time for a rookie wideout, so Eskridge is damaging his odds of cementing No. 3 duties behind DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. 2020 sixth-rounder Freddie Swain is running as the third option for now.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio believes Courtland Sutton is "still holding back a little bit" in his return from a torn ACL.
"He worked in the offseason, but all his work in the offseason was on air," Fangio said. "Now you put the defenders out there and it is a totally different ballgame. ... I see a little hesitancy." Fangio said he wasn't trying to provoke "alarm," and that Sutton is "progressing." The coach's comments come after he said earlier this month that Fangio's reps would be managed during camp. Although Sutton will be a year removed from his injury in September, it sounds like he could get off to a slow start, especially since he will be catching passes from either Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater. Sutton didn't get a ton of reps with erratic Lock in 2019 and has never played with Bridgewater. Sutton is one of the most physically imposing wideouts in all of football when he's right and has plenty of experience succeeding with less-than-gifted signal callers.

Jamal Adams and LT Duane Brown are not participating in practice at Seahawks camp as they wait for contract extensions.
Both players reported to avoid fines, but neither is going in the early days of Seahawks camp as they hope for the finishing touches to be put on new contracts. It's the same approach Bobby Wagner successfully employed two years ago. The fact that the Seahawks aren't making a stink about it strongly suggests deals are on the way.
