What investigation should they have done?

I'm genuinely interested how they could have tracked this down because I wouldn't have a clue how they could find it.

We could have called on the Federal Bureau of Amateur Indigenous Artists Who Display Pictures at Hospital Charity Events in 2019 or the FBAIAWDPHCE2019 for short.

It's niche, but I'm sure such a department exists.

Easiest way?

Sending it in an email to every single artist in the world who has ever painted and asking them if this is like theirs.

Right!

"So this indigenous art, it has dots?"

"Yep"

"Yeah, I'm sure I've seen dots before"

"Maybe, but this has a kangaroo"

"Yeah, I feel I've seen that too"

Would have loved our press release to just be

"We have been notified about the allegations of plagiarism - as we unfortunately do not own any of the designs and all guernsey designs are owned and controlled by the AFL, this is an AFL problem and not an us problem.

Have a nice day"
Should have added "for any further comments please speak to our jumper spokesperson Mr E McGuire"

" The winning entrant came from 17-year-old Ariarna Rigney, who said her design was inspired by designs she saw on social media. " link

I don't know if Ariarna told the club this, but if she did, then it should have been big red flag.

This is a child making a sketch for a school project we are talking about, not a seasoned professional. She probably doesn't have a folio of work and a vast amount of intermediate sketches and drawings. We probably did talk to her and her teachers and presumably came to the conclusion that she sounded genuine.

Really what you are saying is that we shouldn't have used a child's school project work to come up with a commercial project. It's a legitimate concern but it's not uncommon to do competitions with children for this sort of stuff. It seems we have just got unlucky and unfortunately bought into the story of what seems like a pathological liar.

Also I'm not sure what you mean by saying this is a sensitive issue. It's an indigenous person plagiarising another indigenous person's work.

Look I'm no indigenous art expert, but if someone produced a painting as high quality as that one, they aren't doing it on Sunday night before handing it in on Monday. They've been doing it for years. It's a very high quality piece. They would have to have hundreds of previous pictures.

Anyway, the clubs ability to step on its own toes these days is about the only form of entertainment they give me because god knows I cannot be bothered watching them play football the same way they have for most of the last 7 years.

Oh, and #sackhinkley and #hireanewguernseydesigner

Considering the amount of cuts to the admin and subsidiary departments. It appears that they probably had many jobs increasing risk of unprofessional oversight.

We literally have an Indigenous artist on our board.

A lot will be made about this in the short term but this will be forgotten about in barely 2 weeks time.

Dare I say that I wouldn't be surprised if in any contractual agreement between the club and the supposed artist, there was a statement saying that the artist acknowledges that this design is a true original piece of work. I doubt the club would have gone much further than that.

The bigger issue is how the club responds to this. I'm not concerned about the oversight because these things can happen - the odds are very low but it does happen.

If there is one thing the club is extremely good at doing, it is their outreach and engagement with indigenous people and their communities. I have little doubt that the club will be able to find a solution that satisfies both the original artist and the club.

Lol. I'd forgotten about that. Surely he was involved in this process somewhere along the line.
