BT reads it:

Cunningham - Cunningham - Cunningham

‘guy is everywhere.
How many possessions is that now Bruce?’
To be fair,
They are all wearing the same jumper
So.....
Yeah.

I see Newnes as a stop-gap and not best 22.

Thought about how people rate players a bit over the break....

1. Practically speaking: Newnes is best 22 every time he gets picked to play - same as everyone else on the list - don't ya think?
2. Philosophically speaking: In the long term - everyone is a 'stop gap'.
3. Life advice : Embrace the 'now' . Live in the moment my friend.
4. Proof of concept: Were we all happy for Newnes when he kicked the improbable against Port - look at the reaction of all his team mates. Look at Cottrell a battler by any definition - no one told him he was just a stop gap when he won the game against Sydney for us. Look at Levi - stop gap forward for his whole career - and our best forward for most of it. Lots of examples we can all point to that say the battlers are just as important as the 'stars' and their small successes are often the difference between joy or sorrow - win or loss.

a good article Mr Tasmanian tiger. I gave up reading footy in the Age a while ago when staff cutbacks rendered it pretty much meaningless, so thank you for pointing it out.

I’m interested in how we are handling Williams. I have a sneaking feeling that we’ve put Saad forward as our big name recruit, so as to take pressure off ZW. The website and puff pieces from the club have been Saad, Saad, Saad. As far as I can remember, this is about the first article in the off season in which the focus is on ZW. Probably a smart move by the club if it is indeed intentional. The media heat will come on quick smart if he hasn’t won us a game and averaged 30-plus possessions in the first three rounds (only slight exaggeration).

I want Newnes to play as a hard-running defensive forward.

Watched the YouTube vid of all his goals last season, he seriously kicked some very good goals which required a high level of skill.

I think his fitness and physicality would allow him to play as a defensive half-forward whilst still giving the opposition something to think about by hitting the scoreboard.

Allows us to free up Willo to wreak havoc on the wing.

Williams will be a gun feeding off Crippa in the gutz.

I think if Newnes isn’t getting regular games this year without stating the obvious, then certainty young players have stepped up and created better or possibly much stronger choices of best22 selections...
That can only be a good thing, until that happens then atm he’s pretty much makes a strong case so far and holds his spot in the B22 until it’s taken off him whatever role he plays...

just bring him in for the freo games

That means he would have to replace one of our best 22 worthy small/mid sized forwards.

Assuming we play 4 like last year, it wouldn't be Martin or Fisher. Gibbons is a chance to go, but I rate him. Betts is the last one, but I still think that on a good day, he provides more than Newnes.

Betts averaged 1.8 goals per game in the first half of the season. Once the footy frenzy and condensed fixture started affecting him, his output wasn't nearly the same. Despite all this, he still finished 2nd in our average goals per game, behind McKay. I have no doubt that in front of crowds this year, it will ignite a spark which was missed last year due to COVID.

All that this means is that in my opinion, Newnes isn't in our best 22. However, these are all positive signs that our depth and quality in the list is building.

Bring on season 2021.

Where do people see SPS playing this year? IMO; Newman or Saad would take his back line spot. Will be interesting to see where the coach plays him.

Not enough love for Weiters and I think it’s because he is a victim of his high standards and being a little serious/driven. The guy has developed into a monster looking at the pic earlier and does not put a foot wrong on or off the field. People talking about walsh lifting standards, Weiters has been setting the tone for a while but nobody has jumped on his bandwagon because is floor is so high. Other than when bolts played him forward you can probs count on 1 hand the amount of times he has lost his match up.
Reckon it will come this year. Laid the platform with AA squad selection, leadership group and probably first B and F. If (when) we make finals, at least two of Cripps, Weitering and Walsh will be AA.

I think SPS is criminally underrated. HBF is not his position, yet our supporters are so quick to forget how good he was in 2017-19 when actually played in the midfield. It does suck to see that the coaches will be playing him mostly in defence this year.

Unfortunately, with Newman and Marchy hopefully coming back from injury (which pushes Willo out onto a wing), I just don't see a spot for SPS in the best 22 at this point. He could possibly take Murphy's spot in the midfield mix, but that's unlikely.

However, with Newman being uncertain to make rd 1, we could see a rotation of SPS and Willo across a HBF and wing. I guess we just have to put our full trust into the coaches and selection pannel.

And that's before you factor in Fogarty, Durdin or JSOS coming in to the side.

Poor Weiterbot was robbed in 2020, I hope you're correct this year.

On the wing, if midfield is chock full, those dinky kicks to Harry on the lead, yes please thanks.

Haha I don't think any Carlton supporter forgets how good SPS was in midfield, Bulldogs game in particular in 2018 or 2019 if I'm not mistaken.

Amos seems very keen on keeping him in defense, so it'd be wing if anywhere else at all, no room in HFF.

Marchbank has barely played recently, so I doubt they'll instantly throw him in the ring.

You'd think he would need to get some continuity in the 2's first, but we'll see.

Murphy will play every game this year unless injured, same with Ed.

It's good though really, players should have to EARN their spots, too bad if player A is playing better than you etc.

Finally get to the point, where players may get pushed out/choose to go to other clubs etc as they can't get a game, which will be a shame but sign of a successful club on the upwards trend.
