Hoping they were told to go easy but if this is LOB’s effort at the contest on Instagram then he still looks like he has a bit development to go. If we want to be competitive at the contest and hard to play against then this will need to get better.

We beat sides like Cats, close loss to Port, with the foot soldiers. What let us down was inconsistency from youth, older players deteriorating in form and a lack of layers in the gameplan.

We will play finals with or without the likes of Gibbons, Newnes, Newman, but until the youth find consistency, the soldiers will play each week, IMHO
We didn't play finals with foot soldiers and the competition is harder this year (from memory didn't Gibbons turn the ball over in the last minute to cost us the Port game?)

"but until the youth find consistency, the soldiers will play each week, IMHO" I am not arguing otherwise, just that until the youth finds consistency we don't make finals.

I have put my first round 18 with 14 players fighting for 4 spots on the bench including walk up starts in Setterfield & Murphy (probably Fogarty). What's your round 1 teams FWIW?

Martin spending more time in midfield alongside Williams will really transform our midfield and give it more speed and a dynamic look that's been missing.

Newnes was great in front of goal...though it was more as a wingman pushing forward. Playing as a dedicated forward with a defender is a different story to pushing forward as a winger without anyone on you. He's a good tackler too though so think he could play a half forward type role well like Costagna. Apply pressure and kick 1-2 goals a game, job done.

2nd half of the season he was playing a lot more forward than wing.

You are assessing effort, or lack thereof from a single pic?

We have differing opinions, just like last year, which is great, let's see how it plays out now

And no, Gibbons didn't turn the ball over in the last minute of the game

No the video... take a look at the video on Insta... if this is his effort. He knows contacts is coming and one arm gets flung out. For mine this is one of his big improvement area. We need to be harder, more competitive at the contest. As I said maybe they were told to go easy but the video is demonstrative for me of one of his big AFL gaps.

I think the Pies are vulnerable. Saints played a great brand of footy, but will be dissected more, Dogs are still hot and cold if they don't get it on their terms.
As I said above the pies are the most likely but hard to see the Saints adding Higgins & Crouch and going backwards while the Dogs getting Treloar makes it hard to see them drop. - Even if we said 2 of those 3 come out I think there are 5 teams fighting for those 2 spots, GWS, Melbourne, Us, Freo & the Suns - it isn't going to be easy to make finals.

I think 3 of the 4 I mentioned (JSOS, Fisher & Fogarty) have shown they offer enough to get ahead of the "reliables" - they players we need to emerge are the likes of Dow, O'Brien, Kemp, Carroll, Philp & Cuningham.

If I was to list a starting 18 for round 1 it would be

Plowman, Jones, SPS
Docherty, Weitering, Saad
Williamson, Cripps, Walsh,
Fisher, Casboult , Martin
JSOS, McKay, Betts
TDK, Williams, E Curnow

Which leaves 4 spots to be taken by (in no particular order) - Setterfield, Murphy, Marchbank, McGovern, Stocker, Dow, O'Brien, Kemp, Fogarty, Carroll, Durdin, Cuningham, Newnes or Gibbons.
I thinks Newnes will take that spot before Williamson.

FWIW if you have us going into finals who comes out?

"And no, Gibbons didn't turn the ball over in the last minute of the game" - see from the 1.40 mark.

Kicking the ball long down the line where a group of Carlton players (including Pittonet, Levi & big Harry) were outmarked despite knowing exactly where the ball was going is now deemed to be turning the ball over.

Wow that's either a new completely no fault stat or someone with an axe to grind.

It's never easy, but if we start the season well (hopefully we have sorted the run ins against us), we could do similar to what Port, Saints did last year, Lions going from 5 wins to finals.

No excuses this year, unless we have a massive injury run

I wouldn’t say the competition will be harder this year. I’d say it could very well be easier with home games v interstate sides. Interstate sides getting tired with more travel (I.e. Brisbane). We also train fir elite e Duran e which we lost with the shorter quarters. Red tone goals that used to be our enemy will now be our friend and major weapon in 2021.

Maybe, but what Williamson did against the Lions was much better than anything Newnes offered during the year IMO. Took the game on with run and used the ball really well by foot going into forward 50 -it is exactly what we need off the wing.
Disagree. I’d say Newnes was responsible for 2 wins off his own back.

Kicking the ball and having the opposition mark it is a turnover. Most teams would have gone short (probably backwards) to a player by themselves instead of long down the line to a contest, especially not a kick that didn't favour any of our talls (instead putting it over their heads) or kick it boundary side if them.

Gibbons was the player with the ball (thanks to some clear thinking from SPS), the person with the ball controls the game, he gave up that control.

Which of the top 10 sides is worse that last year?

Our foot soldiers were and are fine imo. It’s guys like McKay, Setterfield, SPS etc who are the guys we need to go from C+- B graders to A graders. That’s where our improvement will come from. I have absolutely no doubt that Gibbons and Newnes (neither who I rate highly) could’ve been the 21-22 guys in those Richmond and Geelong sides and it would’ve made near no difference.

I would siggest that Port, the Siants and the Lions did what they did because the young players pushed out the jouneymen.

Really great side you've got there. Personally for the interchange I'd take the first three on your list, plus either Gibbo or Newnes to take that forward rotation on the bench.
