It's all the same until pick 61, at which point the extra picks that clubs can't use have been removed.

Thanks Lore, so any “magic bean” picks Brisbane get after matching bids will come in at pick 84 (80 after their picks in the 30’s are swallowed) and thus have 0 points value.

Lore I know the info you posted in the previous post comes from the tweets you embedded, but

1) why would Brisbane give up 41 and get generated 41 as part of the Ashcroft bid, and

2) GWS had to give up 17 ie 1025 pts to bid on Rowston at 16 which is 1067 pts, but after 20% discount is 854 pts, so 171 pts left over which generates pick 58 which is 170 pts. Pick 58 on the Draft Tracker is showing Freo. Have I missed something with this bid?

I'm not sure tbh. It's one of those things where you just accept what you're told because the chance of finding anything to actually explain it in a way that is satisfactory is slim. Hopefully there will be a media release at some point but I won't hold my breath 😝

Surplus points from a first round bid match don't generate another pick, the surplus carries over to next year or the year after instead, and would be used to match a first round bid matching in future years.

So the Brisbane bids, first on Ashcroft generated 3 picks in the 80's because they have gaps on their list to get to max 38 players?

The Fletcher bid generated pick 72 which is 19pts. I haven't done the calculation to check.

We started the night with 83 potential picks, Ashcroft added 1, eliminated 4 and then 3 picks in the 80's.
Fletcher added 1, eliminated 3 and get 2 picks, 72 and 86.

Something isn't consistent. if Melbourne had the last pick with 83 according to last AFL draft order article on 19th November, Ashcroft bid turns it to 84, then 4 eliminated makes it 80 not 82. ( even allowing for 41 being eliminated and then regenerated)

I wonder if it's because the AFL do this weird thing where they generate the pick with surplus points first, and then move the picks to the back of the draft.

34, 35, 38, 40, 41 = 2370 points
Bid at pick 2 = 2013 points
The surplus = pick 45

Pick 34 moves up to pick 2.
35, 38 and 40 move to the end of the draft (82, 84, 86)
Pick 41 is moved back to pick 45, but then picks 35, 38 and 40 are removed, moving pick 45 back to pick 41.

So if a first round pick is used to match, it gets used up and any surplus is held over, e.g. Pick 17 used to match Pick 16.

If later picks are used to match, then whatever points are left will see that pick devalued to whatever remains of it and slot back into the order. So with the Fletcher match pick 41 and 47 are used up altogether, pick 49 is mostly used up and has 20 odd points left so it slides back to pick 72. Any remaining points (if there's a discrepancy between what the pick was before and what it becomes after matching), then those remaining points again get set aside as a surplus for a future year. The picks in the 80s are then generated so that Brisbane can still fill their list.

The other thing to remember is that Hawthorn generated picks at the end of the draft when they made the trade with Brisbane (which happened during the draft). Hawthorn traded 4 of their picks for 1 pick in this draft (and the one pick in the future draft), which means they now have 3 additional list spots, which generates 3 picks at the end of the draft so they can fill their list.

It's why Brisbane's picks at the end of the draft are 82, 84 and 86; Hawthorn has picks interspersed between.

Ok I stuffed up with comparing GWS and Brisbane. I now understand why 72 was generated.

Brisbane picks in the 80's still don't look right if the 19 November article is correct that 83 was the last live pick.

JasRulez answered that above ^ in that Hawthorn's picks were re-generated at the end as well.

Having too few picks generates more so you can fill your list, but having too many picks doesn't cause them to be removed/deactivated. So Brisbane have more picks now than they have available list spots. This confirms what dlanod was saying either here or in the resources thread

Ok let me see if I have got this straight. Below is the AFL's draft tracker page showing the last 9 picks

78 was Melbourne's 83 at the start of the night adjusted for additions and eliminations.

79 is the crows because 3 picks used to get Michalanney so 2 picks generated to fill list, last one was 79.
Edit and as the crows finished 14th, Hawks 13th and Brisbane 4th so crows get first pick after Melbourne's 83 turned into 78.

Hawks have 3, because last pick was 63 at start of the night, they traded out 4 picks for only 1 in this year, so they generated 3 to fill their list.

Brisbane have 4 picks shown below because they;

traded in 4 picks and traded out 1
trade in 1 pick and out 1 of the 4 above
Have 4 traded in picks and 3 original picks under 55.

eliminated 3 of their own picks and 1 traded in for Ashcroft bid,
eliminated 3 picks traded in for Fletcher bid,
Net above eliminated is 7 picks.
But 2 players picked up so 2 picks generated from bids and have to have 5 picks to fill their list.

Pick 72 ( generated from using 2nd round picks) which is now 71 after 2 picks generated and 3 eliminated with Michalanney bid.
+ 4 picks after Melbourne's original 83 which is now 78.
Not consecutive, because Hawks picks effectively mean we have different rounds between each Hawks + Brisbane pick for 3 rounds and last 2 picks are consecutive and technically their own rounds.

Pick 34 moves up to pick 2.

Pick 41 is moved back to pick 45, but then picks 35, 38 and 40 are removed, moving pick 45 back to pick 41.
I think we have a winner. Thanks for the explanation!

Also, has it been confirmed or clarified anywhere which future 3rd round picks Brisbane gave away last night and to who?

The one tied to Melbourne went to North and the one tied to the WB went to Hawthorn. We kept our own pick.
