On Sunday, the Swans AFLW team play their most important game of their short history. A simple win won't get us in, we have win and win well.
Fremantle are a different team at home and last week they took it up to ladder leaders Melbourne before being over run. This will be a challenge.

13th vs 8th

Our form hasn't been too bad on the road but the trip over to Perth is a new mountain to climb.

We don't necessarily have to win well. Mostly we just have to match (or nearly match) the margin of victory (it's actually more about percentage but margin is a good proxy) of any victories that Collingwood or Saints may have. Like us, they are playing games against closely ranked opposition teams. Unlike us they don't have to travel far and Collingwood will be hosting a home game. However, those advantages are, IMO, offset by the fact that we play the last match of the round so we will know exactly what margin we need to win by.

What we need to do:

First, we must WIN! (It's actually possible that we could lose and qualify - but that's a long shot).

Second, we have to avoid being leapfrogged on percentage by Collingwood and Saints. If they both lose, we're in the 8. If either or both of them win but don't overtake us on percentage, we're in the 8.

IF GEELONG LOSE, we can afford to be overtaken by one of Collingwood or Saints. However, more excitingly if Geelong lose (it's not that likely, given they play at home against the bottom 5 ranked Hawks) then we can get a HOME FINAL provided we maintain our superior percentage compared to Pies and Saints.

Exciting times!

The good thing is they all play before us - so by the time our game comes around our fate will be truly in our hands.

Even if the Pies and Saints both lose, we can’t afford to get thrashed or our percentage could fall below theirs.

But, somehow, I’m confident that we will put up a good fight. We may not win but I think the margin will be close (either way).

The huge improvement over the course of the season has been our ability to actually score. The round one victory came off the back of a couple of freakish Malloy moments. Round two we mostly matched Geelong in the midfield but they had a functioning forward line and we didn’t.

But now there seems to be much more system in how the ball is used once we get it into our forward half. And it definitely helps when the likes of Ham, Priv and Hurley can convert set shots from the pocket!

Agreed, Liz. Our forward line in the first couple of games just wasn't functional, a lot of positional errors etc. I feel like they're really growing in confidence as the season went on, and I think some positional changes also worked in cementing that forward line together.

Ham kicked well on the weekend, but she's still got a lot of improvement to go and that's okay. Been out with injury and she's very young, the best is ahead.

AFLW 2023 round 10.jpg

THIS year, Sydney doesn't hope. It believes.

The Swans believe in the strides they made throughout a second pre-season. They believe in each member of the playing group. They believe their coaches can bring those players along.

They believe they can be a force.
