Looks like a really big crowd at Moorabbin today and as I said in a previous post that that was the sort of crowd that the strong at that time Morrabbin VFA team (two flags and two runners ups) used to get against the top VFA teams at that time in the late 1950s early1960s when Linton Street Oval was about the same size it is again now!

My last two footy games have both been Geelong vs Essendon at GMHBA - the practice match on Friday and the AFLW elimination final in November. Both times they seemed to underestimate the expected crowd.

But it’s a really nice stadium to watch the footy at, love the fact they’ve kept some cattle gates for standing room in the Selwood stand, and I think there’s going to be some really good attendances at the ground this year now that it’s (finally) finished.

tickets for the Gabba are $225 now. I have never seen anything like that before. They are labelled "in demand tickets". What sort of price gouging is this shit?

Interestingly this seems to only apply to those very small number of 2 seats together. There's a few dozen single seats that are still listed as low as $60.

Ticketmaster introduced the concept of in demand seats years ago, its the second year they have applied to the AFL.

Opening Round update:

Syd/Melb - basically sold out
Bris/Carl - around 150 scattered single seats left + about 6 sets of 2 seats for ridiculous prices
GWS/Coll - standing room only
GC/Rich - has sold steadily this week and now only the back 2-3 rows in about 10 bays left

All 4 games now a chance to sell out. This plus an expectation of around 400k for the actual Round 1 would seem to justify the AFL's decision from a ticket selling viewpoint.

Round 1:

The MCG has got me very confused as to how they're releasing seats. There are seats now available for Carl/Rich and Coll/Syd that weren't yesterday that I would have thought already gone, particularly as they seem to be better than the seats offered previously.

For example, Q1-Q7 for Carl/Rich including the front rows have only now gone on sale, whereas yesterday the best you could get was the back of the Ponsford upper deck.

Carl/Rich currently has only Q1-7 (all rows), Q32-34 (back rows) and restricted view on sale.

Coll/Syd currently has only Q49-50 (back rows) and Q33-36 (back rows) on sale.

At least in the AFL Member's its easy to tell how much has been sold - for Carl/Rich it's around 95%, for Coll/Syd it's about 90%.

Ess/Haw has substantially more tickets available than the other two big MCG games.

Geelong has only single seats left for the public in their first game at the complete Kardinia Park. Will be interesting to see how many they can get in for a sell out.

All other games look like having lots of availability at the moment.

Sydney vs Melbourne should be between 42-44k
Brisbane vs Carlton around 33-35k
Gold Coast vs Richmond 20-23k
GWS vs Collingwood-20-22k
Huge success for the AFL in terms of crowds.

Worth pointing out that the largest non derby crowd for the Giants is 15,751. That particular record looks like being destroyed.

Some other records to look out for:

Syd/Melb - record for these 2 at SCG 41,753
Bris/Carl - record for these 2 at Gabba 36,780 (unlikely in current config)
GC/Rich - record for these 2 at Carrara 19,425
GWS/Coll - record for these 2 at GWS 15,467

Seemed to be quite a few spare seats.
As the SCG now only holds around 42,000 totally full with almost every seat occupied 40,012 looked about right and obviously some people that did have a ticket did not turn up but crowd was very good for a working Thursday and I don't think any NRL will top it this weekend in Sydney.
Maybe the AFL should count the total ticket sales as the crowd like the NFL and NBA do in the US.

Trials starting this weekend.

Historical data: AFL Tables

Might separate the Attendance and Ratings threads this year.

Also if we can keep the usual tigers/pies early season crap out of here that would be great
interested to see the seperate tables

Seemed to be quite a few spare seats.

They do manage to pack in 45k for finals so there had to be ~5k spare seats scattered around.

The Gold Coast / Richmond game is down to the last 100-200 seats. It's been a really good effort this week with this game as there were a lot of seats available a few days ago.

People First Stadium SOLD OUT for Opening Round

Opening Round at People First Stadium is officially a sell-out with the final general public tickets for Saturday’s fixture against Richmond exhausted.

All general public and premium hospitality tickets have been sold for Saturday’s blockbuster clash which is shaping to be among the highest-attended season openers in SUNS history.

“This is the second sell-out in as many seasons at the newly-named People First Stadium and it’s fantastic to be witnessing the anticipation around our club ahead of an exciting 2024,” GC SUNS Chief Executive Mark Evans said.

The last sell-out at People First Stadium was in Round 16 last year when the SUNS hosted Collingwood. The highest attendance for a GC SUNS home match at the venue is 24,032 - a record set in Round 16, 2014.

The highest attendance for a GC SUNS season opener at People First Stadium is 19,425, coincidentally set against Richmond in Round 1, 2014.

Even if they did sell all the tickets Thursday games are always a natural drag on attendances being a school/work night the next day. Naturally contributes to a couple of thousand not rocking up if they remembered they have an early start the next day or whatever.

For example Sydney average less than 30k for their Thursday games historically while averaging about 33k for all their other fixtures.
