Matt Shorts Break even in Round 1 is 101

To me it seems a risk given we aren't sure we are going to get a minimum 3 overs from him this season. Each to their own though. Ive been strong about this one, throughout the last 3-4 weeks and I haven't changed my mind on that.

Insight Youtube team analysis:

Thornton , Doggett/Buckingham , Boyce, Pope will chew at least 15 overs but possibly leaning towards 16 overs. Overton to split the overs at best with Matt Short.

I remember actually in the recent West Indies v England series, Overton was purely playing as a batsman as 8, so it gets me thinking possibly Overton and Matt Short may break up the overs 1:3, 2:2 or 3:1.

And we haven't even mentioned Fabian Allen yet.

Insight BBL watching their Youtube from yesterday make mention that there is a reason why Adelaide picked Fabian Allen into this team.

Tim Paine who was recruited in the coaching this season makes a strong point about looking to play 2 specialist spinners in this team, which means Pope and Boyce should get majority of overs. Matt Short is at best a 3rd spinner in this side, and I reckon at best we see 5 overs split between: Matt Short, Overton and Fabian Allen.

Quote from Paine in relation to spin bowling : "Obviously we want to win but we want to do it in a certain way, we want entertain and be aggressive and bowl lots of spin." Make of that what you will.

One thing he dosen't mention is Matt Short is the Captain

When the **** do we find out who plays and who doesn't, footy seasons bad enough without this carry on.

if Beau Webster plays, having Sammy Harper in the team becomes borderline useless as he will bat around 6 or more likely 7.

Better to have a keeper to use as a loophole eg Doran for the DNP.

My only thinking a few weeks ago of having Harper , was hoping he would get shoved up the order as opener or bat as 3. All of those plans can now go in the bin.

Im going to look to avoid Matt Short in Round 1 just because its at Manuka Oval in Canberra and he didnt score well there last season (scored 40 points). Not sure what kind of wicket we get there, as scoring was tougher there last season. But with Adelaide having a double in round 2, then will be the time to bring him in, when I may be able to get a slightly reduced price.
He didnt get 40 points, he got 139 points at Manuka Oval last season.

Just want to clear that up.

People shouldn’t have any of the $58000 guys as their bench wkt. They won’t make money. Save salary and just go Doran

Not sure I’ll start with Overton now. Potentially Trade him in when I see his role.
I think a toss up between Overton and Paul Walter for me.

Given Brisbane wont have Neser or Spencer for the Round 1, it makes a bit of an easier choice for me. Brisbane look also to be a depleted with the bat this season. (or for the 1st half of the season anyway)

At the moment I have done the following. Will look at getting Walter, Renshaw, Sixes players next two weeks. Sixers are best to trade in. I have enough for r2 double.

Siefert (Doran)

Brown, Fraser McGurk, Webster, Allan, Khan (Turner, Konstas)

Tye, J Richardson, Zampa, McKenzie, Milne (Stoinis, Connolly)

Short

Went Stoinis because I don’t want to start him and needed a bat/bowl flex. Brought him in just in case he goes well. If he doesn’t I can just turn him into Henriques or a Renshaw for the round 3 double.

Thunder v Strikers trial:

  • Ferguson, Wes Agar, Chris Green got 4 overs. Nathan McAndrew looked like he didnt get a game.
  • Thunder won by 26 runs
  • Konstas opener, Bancroft at position 3, Would imagine Ollie Davies has edged out Jason Sangha for a batting role- given Warner will be opener.
  • Buckingham got 3 wickets and a catch and is firming for a spot on Tuesday night.
  • 21 runs were scored in the Power Surge by the Thunder.
  • We don't have the Adelaide scoreboard but I dont fancy players like Manenti (assuming Bens brother), Andrews, King and Cahill will get games. So Adelaides team seemed much more experimental.

Lachlan Shaw is a better option he will be selected in Tomorrow's team but will probably be 12th man. Also he is in only 1% of teams.

If Adelaide play two or three spinners NIELSEN could jag three or 4 dismissal involvements.

I'm running Siefert, Doran , Phillipe atm fwiw

Starting 8 DGR players, looping 2 scorchers and fielding Short & Overton at the moment. Webster (vc) and Khan ready as back up. Pretty happy with the squad.

Biggest trouble i had was settling on a playing keeper. Ive ended up with Siefert who im hoping is at least solid. I really like the mix of my team even with the big $ forked out for Short. If Hardie/Maxwell were fit id probably have dropped Short and used more money to get them in but since both are out for the first round (i expect Maxxy to miss both games) i am not too bullish on any really good allrounders that i dont already own. So spreading the Short cash around doesnt appear to help my team that much.

I also do the test of 'what would make me feel worse' and i think id feel worse if:
- Short dominated round 1 and i couldnt easily get him for round 2 without tearing my team apart
Rather than
- If i fork out the $ for him and he does really poorly in round 1 and becomes cheaper for everyone else to potentially pick him up

I genuinely dont feel that confident i can improve my team by that much if i take Short out and spread the cash around. I fully accept that that could help other people with their teams massively but for me, im happier with a Short team than without.

Bring on tonight!

Only decision left for me is

Jake Fraz McGerk + 80k
Or
Overton

Truly doing my head in

Tough one. I still go back to watching JFM dominate in the IPL so im backing him in but he is boom/bust and could well be worth fading.

Overton is one that i havent moved from my team for a long time as he will practically be a must have for round 2.

One thing i like about the flex and 11 out of 12 scores counting is it is now slightly less risky to go for a boom/bust batsman because if they fail you might be able to still field 11 strong scores. Since JFM has the double, its less risky playing him too but i really rate Overton as well.

I have no answers for you, its a tough one. Best of luck with what you choose.

Thiiiink i'm going with -

siefert ( Doran )
short - Curran - Philippe - sutherland - stoinis ( Renshaw - Konstas )
Webster VC - Walter - Thornton - Zampa - Mckenzie ( Buckingham - salzmann )
Connolly

97k in the pot

We sure sutherland gets 4, yeah ?...

Not a shoe-in based on practice game.

Zampa gets 4, I reckon Tommy Rogers gets 4, Fergus O'Neill and Hassan probably will get at least 7 overs combined.

Kane Richardson and Sutherland probably to combine for 5 overs .

I doubt Renegades go a 7th bowler.
