Blues drop Opening Round bombshell; possible season-opener revealed - Fixture Whispers

According to Jay Clark, Geelong is a chance to take on the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in the first game of the 2025 season where the Lions will unfurl their premiership flag.

Carlton wants to give Opening Round a miss next year, according to reports. According to the Herald Sun’s Jay Clark, the Blues are hoping to avoid a road-heavy schedule in the early part of next year which is part of the reason why they have told the league they would prefer to start their 2025 season in the traditional season-opener against Richmond at the MCG.

According to Tom Morris, there has “been a shift” in Collingwood’s stance on Opening Round. Morris reported that Collingwood’s position in July was that all 18 clubs should play across Opening Round to make it fair, but since missing out on this year’s finals campaign, the Pies have changed their tune. The Pies would be fine with a similar arrangement to this year, if that’s how the AFL decided to do things.

Didn't realise those were two separate articles initially, because that "Round 1 fixture" makes no sense and I was shocked that it would've leaked to Fox Footy.

Turns out that fixture is just speculation from ZH like usual. ;)

(For starters, that fixture would have Collingwood and Brisbane play each other twice by Round 5, along with a bye in there too.)

If that comes to pass it'll be one home game for opening round then approximately 2 months until the next game again in Olympic Park. :(

I'll be there, the Giants press release appears to indicate that we'll need to purchase our tickets this year?

I thought in previous years members would receive a complimentary ticket to our game. Happy to stump up the cash since I'll already be there but would've been nice to get a complimentary ticket, lol.

Not sure there's enough time to get from the Carlton v Eagles game to the Bulldogs v Lions game at Norwood then back to the Dees v Dons game at AO 🥲

So, the intel was right on everything except 3 Saturday AO games - which did seem a stretch anyway, so one of those actually at Norwood Oval seems more realistic.

Should start to see some actual leaks of the Opening Round and Round 1 fixtures now. I agree the ponderings I released earlier have a lot of holes (like many mock drafts!) at this stage.

SMH reporting backs up what Giant YoYo posted from Tom Morris.

Peter Ryan

Essendon face a tough start to their 2025 campaign, expected to meet the Suns on the Gold Coast in opening round before playing the emerging Hawks at the MCG in round one. The Bombers and the Hawks are both expected to be additions to opening round, which kicks off the 2025 season in the northern states, according to three competition sources who remained anonymous ahead of the fixture release. Hawthorn are likely to meet Sydney at the SCG for just the second time under Sam Mitchell.

Geelong will face the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba, with their Thursday night clash to begin opening round. Collingwood are also expected to play the Giants in opening round in 2025, as they did this season. The Magpies have lost their past four encounters against the Giants at Giants Stadium. However, the fixture was a sellout in 2024 and the biggest crowd for a non-derby at the venue. Collingwood play Sydney at the Adelaide Oval on Friday night in Gather Round.

Carlton, Melbourne and Richmond were the other three Victorian teams involved in the inaugural opening round this year but will not take part in 2025.

REIGNING premier Brisbane will kick the 2025 season off with a rematch of its epic preliminary final against Geelong, while big Victorian clubs will head north as part of Opening Round. Collingwood will return to Engie Stadium, as it did to begin last season, to face Greater Western Sydney, with Hawthorn and Essendon also added to the roster of four matches.
Matches will be spread over four days, from Thursday to Sunday, as opposed to last season where they were spread over three.

The Lions will unfurl the premiership flag and begin their title defence at the Gabba on the Thursday night before runner-up Sydney hosts the Hawks at the SCG 24 hours later.

Gold Coast is set to roll out new recruits Daniel Rioli and John Noble in the Saturday twilight timeslot at People First Stadium with the Bombers coming to town, with the Giants and Magpies finishing Opening Round on Sunday afternoon.

Opening Round 2025

Thursday, March 6
Brisbane v Geelong at the Gabba, 6.50pm AEST (7.50pm AEDT)

Friday, March 7
Sydney v Hawthorn at the SCG, 7.40pm AEDT

Saturday, March 8
Gold Coast v Essendon at People First Stadium, 4.15pm AEST (5.15pm AEDT)

Sunday, March 9
Greater Western Sydney v Collingwood at Engie Stadium, 3.20pm AEDT

Wonder if we'll get another 37 degree scorcher like that game against Adelaide the other year.
Geez, that thought brings back unpleasant memories.

How bad it was in the stands ... I can't imagine playing a footy game in it! (And then add in the injuries we suffered in that game.)

And then the week after being completely flat as well.
