2025 player moves - ins and outs

Is he actually getting his 500k salary? It wasn't a medical retirement, went on his own terms, Wouldnt have thought he'd be eligible to get it for pulling the pin himself.

Some benefit to the club as they clearly wanted to open an extra list spot. I’m sure Stevo could have just easily moped around on the list not enjoying it for another year cashing in his pay cheque.

I'm only gong by media reports a week or so ago that said the club and him had come to an agreement and he would be paid. I agree its strange that in football you can break a contract and still get paid.

This was on a channel 9 article "Jaidyn Stephenson is hanging up the boots after seven years in the AFL, aged 25.

Stephenson confirmed reports that he had "lost passion for the game" in recent years as his primary reasoning for retirement.

The North Melbourne forward is still signed on for 2025 but is reported to have gained permission to be paid out for the remaining year of his contract with the club.

Yeah, very strange. Norf are not a club with a spare 500k lying around, so much for the afl's equalization policy hey. Richmond, collingwood, west coast probably contribute some of that.

True, but his salary would come out of their cap right? or maybe they could give it to him over 2-3 even 4 years instead. The NFL or MLB had a guy still getting paid 15 years after he last played for them over a restructured contract

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure every AFL club has to pay 95% of the salary cap every year. The salary cap is linked to the TV deals, with the AFL giving each club the money to pay up to the salary cap. So that 500k is going to be spent this year no matter what, so it’s got nothing to do with the equalisation policy

Now North could have front ended some of their existing contracts to create more salary cap room in future years to chase free agents etc. but that’s a whole different conversation

Always a bit hard to tell what is going on.

Look to have lost

Winter (former captain) Norwood
Hutchinson - Norwood
Harvey - Norwood
Lever - Norwood
Morris (captain) Old Yarra
Bendrups (captain) Croydon North

Winter’s brother is at Norwood so looks to have taken a few with him.
Gee I thought Norwood would set their sites a bit higher than recruiting Nunawading players

I reckon most of them will be twos players, quality gaps far too big between all those divisions, if they were any good nunawading would be not anchored to the bottom of the bottom division. Harsh I know but most likely the truth.

Bendrups would have been a hot commodity around that div 3-4 mark due to being able to play as a key forward and having a run around the middle. Assuming Nuna and CN have a rivalry of some sort if the lions get out on the park that will be spicy having crossed over.

The Pies are still paying some of his contract as well.

Luke Potts signed at Oakleigh District from Healesville - ex Frankston, Pines and St Kilda City.

His travelling group is himself, Dane Swan, Aaron Edwards and Levi Greenwood. All except Swan played at Healesville this year.

I’m sure OD could have all four in 2025 if they’re willing to pay for them. Not cheap and not young - I reckon Greenwood would be the youngest at 35yo.

Greenwood still has it. Dominant where ever he has gone to post AFL

Ive done a bit of research and nothing shows this is true. Are you getting confused with treloar? They moved him at the same time, And only just finished paying it off, still got 4-5 years left on grundy money too. Definitely learned their lesson!

Great get for Districts.
The handful of games I watched them play this year their midfield was certainly their downfall. They've fixed that with Hansen and Potts.
Mark Stevens has departed though after 50 odd goals which will leave a massive hole. Aaron Edwards would fit in rather nicely...

Winter is a fine player and one of the biggest kicks of the footy in this league you will see. On the Nunawading ground I've seen him kick from fullback to CHF. One kick was out on the full even though it went past the centre line.

Potts is a great player, as are all of the guys who went and then departed Healesville. But all of these players have the same thing in common, they will go and play well for your team for a year and possibly get you a flag. But then be gone the next, and see you go up a division and be stuffed without your stars. It's really dependent on whether you want to prioritise short term gain of a premiership, for the enevitable of the players then leaving. Look at Healesville this year the perfect example, and Poweltown the other example. Sad I know, but I think the writing is on the wall of how this will end up.
