When you list it like that WilPhil has a huge mountain to climb.

I also wonder about what Powell (I love him) offers elsewhere on the field if he isn't seeing bulk CBA's.
Can and does kick goals,,,,,far from a one trick pony,,,,he could quite conceivably average 20 touches and a goal a game if rotated forward (kicked 9 last season, and was playing some games in defence).

Wouldn’t want him anywhere near the forward line. The ball would literally be walked past him if he plays there

from 18 games....pretty hard to finish high up missing over 20pct of games, unless a freakish talent in their prime.
Colby played 16 and finished 13th.

I’m not bagging George and I don’t reckon anyone else is either. But it’s not that far fetched to suggest he’s got some things to work on which may be in the vfl at times.

He should have been in the VFL late last season. He had a month of stinkers. YOu cAnT dRoP GeOrGe… no one should be immune to being dropped, ESPECIALLY when we have midfield depth.

Yeah, if you want to dumb down the convo to a single stat like tackles where if you just grab someone straight out of the ruck you get one.

Only the most one eyed in this conversation could possibly compare LDU to Wardlaw's defensive work around stoppage.

LDU runs one way in transition, Wardlaw is regularly busting his ass to get after opponents. He's always diving to tackle opponents who have broken through, always chasing etc.

He's ****ed on the ground so much because of the amount of effort he puts in.

Some of the responses here are the age old example of clearly defensive work not getting the recognition, clearly.
Is LDU a defensive animal? No.

None of the great offensive midfielders are.

For every Petracca, there’s a Neal-Bullen.

For every Neale, there’s a Dunkley.

The criticism of LDU’s defensive side is greatly overstated just as the offensive output is understated.

Sonyoure elite in a whole host of offensive stuff?

Pfft, you don’t go at 10 tackles a game so you’re putrid.

Agreed. This idea LDU is a defensive liability is 2 seasons out of date. Anyone still saying it is carrying biases from his earlier years that means any slight lack of intensity in a defensive play during a game (no player goes at 100% intensity during every play. Not physically possible) stands out and confirms to them he is as terrible as they think. He was always in the top few in pressure acts and had decent tackle numbers every week this year.

And Colby IS a freak, well documented George was playing with niggles but kind of irrelvant.....finsihing 13th isn't high up....and I doubt George plays VFL to work on things.

It might not be LDU's go to hunt defensively like George does, so sure maybe that's what Phillips/Wardlaw/FOS/Urqy do.
But I don't think it's too much to ask that he works back to man a spot in the zone so the oppo don't get an easy hit up.
After Lloyd highlighted it on Classified's, he did get better with his pressure acts defensively, but there's still a lot he can improve on with the transition running defensively, but he isn't alone there (Powell, Simpkin etc.).

For every Dustin Martin, there's 20 shitmen running around cleaning up his mess.

I simply do not abide by criticism that could be levelled at every teams top midfielder. The lack of an effective supporting cast is far more of an issue.

It’s a non issue when you’re winning, it’s only seen as a problem when you’re shit. Which we’ve been.

For half a decade.

so we have the camp for a week then xmas break

anyone know what date they return in the new year?

hoping its the first weekend of jan so i can make my way there, we do like a saturday training session now

If we have 3 weeks off like last year, it’d be about Tuesday 7/1 or Wed 8/1.

The main intra club was Wed 14/2.

Wardlaw with 4.3 tackles is elite defensively.

LDU with 3.9 is one of the most unaccountable mids in the league.

That .4 of a tackle a game must be something else.

LDU is probably my favourite player in the side and I totally disagree with anyone criticising his defensive approach and always have, but it's important to note how long they spend on the ground (along with other things) when taking into account stats:

Wardlaw 4.3 tackles in 73.3%TOG (which works out 87.96 minutes in a 120 minute game)

LDU 3.9 tackles in 86.4%TOG (which works out 103.68 minutes in a 120 minute game)

If we're saying a game goes for 120 minutes, it works out that LDU spent an extra ~15 minutes on field per game more than Wardlaw last season, for .4 less tackles.

Definitely want to be middle of the pack in a game of soggy biscuit, wouldn't you. Finish in the top few, and it casts aspersions as to what team you bat for. Finish in the last few, and it'll be the most stressful one you've ever rubbed out.

Wonder if anyone's ever written down a comprehensive tactical guide
