A few observations from last thurs training. I missed the start but players said they started with a 2km trial.
Generally speaking they looked fitter and stronger. They were doing sprints between each drill.
They were counting something on the scoreboard for each team. I think it was the turnovers generated.
They seemed to be in good spirits and were getting around each other in between drills.

It was a little hard to pick out individuals who stood out because the drills were congested in tight spaces on different parts of the ground. But if I had to pick a few I'd say Colby, Sheez, LDU and Curtis stood out.

Curtis and WilPhil looked in great condition, really stood out. Ford and Powell looked a bit different as well.

Luke Urquhart - Physically big for a 1st year player, a real competitor. Kicking was 7 or 8 out of 10, he hit most of his targets but had one Wardlaw-esque shank trying to hit a low bullet pass.

Goad - he's a big boy, moves well and got a booming kick on him. Had some 1v1 marking contests with Teakle to close the session. Older Brynn beat him mostly but it was a good battle. Similar to his ruck battles with Xerri.

Darling and Parker both just big strong, experienced men out there.

FOS - had a few moments in traffic where he caught the eye. Still finding his feet but others spoke highly of him.

Hansen Jnr - looked a little stronger, more confident and involved in passages of play.

Mick McGuane was there watching on. Seemed a bit of a campaigner.

Colin Young was there, watched some of the boys train I would think he manages.

Mitch Cleary emerged from behind the rubbish bins with a woody when LDU was walking off the track.
Such a shame his camera guy missed it. It didn't look like anything serious. They need a story to run I guess.

How is one seemingly “a bit of a c?”

Goad last year in the reserves was a mile off. If he has bulked up and starts competing more aggressively this year it’s a big improvement and big win for him.
I think entirely last season I only saw one moment where he sprinted down the wing took a bounce and hit up a nice kick where i saw why he was drafted so high. Was always going to be a slow burn though.
My fear for Goad is Jacob Edwards
Sorry I should've said I was talking about Matt Whitlock. He's put on some muscle but is still skinny compared to say Chom/Logue etc, which is understandable for a 1st year key position.

Goad had added some real size but is still not strong enough yet compared to Larkey/Darling/Teakle, which is completely understandable. But he didn't back down in the contest.

People bang on about us missing in this draft, but so did a lot of other teams. I think it was fine as there was limited data and so they hedged on two similar types in the top 15, hoping at least one would turn out great and the other OK.
I bang on about it and will continue to. Despite having an extra first rounder to use, that draft and trade period was a complete disaster for us. Overall we dumped 14 players, brought 12 in, and only one of those (Aidan Corr) has established himself. Eight have already been axed.

And we didn't just take 2 small mids, we used our first four picks of the draft on them. This was despite having several already on our list and having taken one the year before.

The only elite kick on our list right now is sheezel.
Few others who are above average or good.
It’s not just about hitting a target, it’s picking the right target and kicking it to their advantage.

Tucker, logue, fisher are not it.
Daniels and Powell decent
Can see McKercher is clever and careful by foot but had some absolute howlers coming out of defence this year.

This is what we want. I stand by the comment that we may look back in 10 years and be glad Gold Coast were on the plane at half time in round 23.
I've mentioned this so sorry for repeating myself but in the WC game that we lost Kerch and what's his name played and Kerch looked thirsty times the player (except for one incredibly good speccy.)
