Training 2025 Pre-Season Thread

We must be the last club to start intra clubs - I think I've seen something from everyone else (except GC).

Looking at all the injuries piling up elsewhere, I am kinda happy with us starting as late as possible.

I didn’t want to enter peak Bigfooty preseason mode and comment on Will McLachlan’s muscle gains but far out the comparison from when he walked through the doors is truly remarkable.
Will McLachlan ran the Grand final sprint for the Lions and we were just near the finish line, we all commented he was a rather good size player then, surprised us as we thought he was a skinny kid from the little reserve grade we had seen on youtube. If he is bigger again he will be pretty solid through the chest.

I attended my first training session for 2025 today.
A little overcast and the temperature was mild for Brisbane this time of the year. Was 23 C at start & 28 C by finish time.
Arrived just on 8am. Players were just warming up, running and stretching etc.
The session finished about 9.20 am, so a short one.
Maybe some indoor work was planned for today.

The kit for the session was a Fitzroy guernsey which i quite liked.
Some players with a guernsey were still in the rehab group or just training separately. A few of those being Starcevich, Lloyd, Payne and Smith doing laps along with a few drills depending on what their issue was, while others were in a Lions training strip.
Players in a training strip did very little to nothing. Some of those were Neale, Hippy, Will Ashcroft, Coleman, Gardiner, and Doedee.

I would summarize the session as a low intensity one, with no match sim of any length.
Started with players lining across the forward and back parts of the center square with one player in the middle.
Low intensity kick to the player in the middle then to the other end and back. It was a race to first back to the start.

Then 3 groups around the ground.
One doing ball handling drills in a small space on the others side of the ground from my position.
The other drill also on the far side of the ground was similar but had a ruck contest to start.
The one closest to me was just kicking to an unmarked leading forward after a kick and handball receive from players at HFF/wing area
Each group had a turn at each drill.

Next was 2 players standing their ground in the goal square with a touch on their opponent. Then a push with hands/arm to get on the lead and take the mark kicked in by another player. Then a variation of that with players up the ground doing a kick, handball receive and trying to kick a goal.
Two group on the opposite side of the ground. I did not take much notice as it was a bit far away but looked low intensity.

Then mixed a few groups up and did something similar to the above.

Then two groups each of two sets of players doing a similar drill but coming in from the opposite pocket of the goal square.
A fullback/ruck on a KPF both trying to hold their ground while the ball comes in from the HFF. Both the defender and forwards objective were not to mark the ball but bring it to ground. Then we have a group of midfielders coming in to where the ball drops. Some of the midfielders are trying to kick a goal the others are trying to take it out of defense.
That was about the closest players came to actually lay a tackle for the session

Finished off with two laps at their own pace and that ended the session apart from a few players having shots on goal for 10 minutes.
Going on my memory so most likely missed some drills

Someone on BF mentioned McKenna training with the forwards and he was with that group today.
Big O was involved a fair bit in the main group but when he found himself in a vulnerable position regarding this shoulder, he just played safe and did not contest properly. Oscar was on Day a lot during the session when contesting the ball forward.
Levi Ashcroft with the main group but always seemed in a group far from my position so i can't comment much on how he went.
Some images of the rehab group. I will post some others from the healthy group later on.

Half forward or WING. I've said before that jasper Fletcher might be the make way player. He doesn't deserve that after the finals run though.

There's going to be heartbreak for many players this year around selection. And for us fans - you simply can't fit 28 players into a premiership team every week.

Rotating in and out might be OK with older players but younger ones generally need to play every week to maintain consistency. zorko's comments last year about playing the kids is interesting - maybe he will step back a bit.

Fagans people skills are going to be tested this year like never before.

For me it's Zac that's going to be the one in the gun, the gaps between his best and worst performances is wide and if he's not up and running early he might struggle.

The football community is mourning the sudden death of former Brisbane player Troy Selwood after his body was found at a Geelong home on Tuesday morning.
Selwood, 40, is part of the famous AFL football family that includes Geelong champion Joel and West Coast Eagles player Adam and Geelong player Scott.
He had been working at Geelong Grammar as the head of football after a 75-game career at the Lions between 2003-2010 after being drafted as the 19th overall selection in the 2002 national draft.

It is understood he was found in his Highton home this morning.
A dogged and determined player like his brothers, he was used mostly as a tagger by the Lions before winning a VFL premiership with Geelong in 2012.
The Selwood brothers all trod various paths to the AFL stage and while they never played together like the famous Daniher brothers, their story was inspirational.
The sons of Bryce and Maree cut their teeth playing in the back yard in Bendigo and at junior club Sandhurst before being recruited to play AFL.
The Selwood family issued a statement on Tuesday following Troy’s passing, saying they would miss the spirit and bravery of their son and brother.

“We are heart broken by the loss of our son, brother and father, Troy this morning. We will miss Troy more than words can express,” the family said.

“Troy was a much loved and loving member of our family. Over the course of his life, Troy bought joy and light to all who knew him. He was a loving son of Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel and Scott, and a doting father of beautiful children Tom and Sadie.
“We will miss Troy’s bravery, his humour, his deep thinking, his love and compassion. Troy had a generosity of spirit, cared deeply about people and strove to make the lives of others better.
We are grateful to all those that have supported Troy throughout his life, and we know that his many friends, teammates and colleagues will miss him greatly.”

Four-time premiership player Joel Selwood played 355 games as the longest-serving captain in AFL history, Scott played 169 games at the Cats and Eagles, while Adam played 187 games for West Coast including the 2006 premiership.
Troy worked at Geelong from 2011 until 2021, moving into the talent ID program from 2017 onwards before being poached by Collingwood.
He lasted only four months before health issues saw him moving on in 2021, then finding a new role at Geelong Grammar in late 2021.
He had only this weekend detailed the remarkable rise of Richmond’s No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor in an interview with Nine.
“The boys used to all come out when Sammy came to the crease, and watch him bat,” Selwood said of Lalor.
“Absolutely, those boarding house windows, he came close to them a number of times.
“He is super explosive, hence the comparisons to ‘Dusty’ or to Petracca or to these type players,”
Scott Selwood is currently working at Collingwood as an assistant coach, while Joel works part time with the AFL while also completing commentary duties with Channel Seven.
Troy was also thrilled with the drafting of AFLW player Lou-Lou Field to Carlton last year after her strong progress playing at Geelong Grammar.
The Selwood family asked for “privacy and respect” as they coped with the “devastating loss”.

Zorks is in sight of 300 though but to get there he needs to basically play every game and let's be honest, he deserves to be a 300 gamer.

On a news site it listed all the beyond blue contacts at the end of the article. Assuming that's relevant (and hopefully it's not) did troy have a lot of concussions? The link between them and mental health is outright scary.

Mitch Robinson said scans show he has lesions on his brain. That's a tough playing legacy.

Concussion is a nasty blight on our game.

I talked to a geneticist recently and he reckons they know a significant chunk of the genetic code profile that makes people susceptible to concision and that sporting codes (didn't say which, or even which country) are looking at viability of screening. But that opens a massive can of worms. Does it mean players get tested and are ineligible to play? At elite level or bunter level? My son has massive concision problems that started in early teenage and are the reason he stopped playing.

There is a Sydney biotech company GLIA Diagnostics currently developing a mild traumatic brain injury test. Based on miRNA rather than genetics per se. It's not only sports but the military, police etc.

Short company video FYI:

I remember one big one, both he and Alex Rance collided and were knocked out

Agree, that concussions are a major worry.

However, it never ceases to amaze me how many serious concussion occur per game in rugby league. Would be interesting/worrying to see how many concussions there were per game in all codes divided into mild, major and catastrophic categories.

They normally don't normally include that unless it is suiicide. The Herald Sun reported that he was found in his house this morning.

Given the number of guys still on very light duties with only 4 weeks till the season we might see quite a different team in the first couple of rounds of the season.

Could be some even more surprising names given a chance to stake a claim on a spot in the team adding to the depth and selection issue as the recovery group (including GF players like Hippy, Neale, Big O) come back and the knee reco group come back in as well.

Even just not wanting to have 3/4/5/6 guys in the teams who had zero minutes of pre season or intra-club footy at the same time makes it seem to me we might not see 22 players from the "best 28" available together until a month into the season.

Wouldn't be surprised if Reville and Beecken feature early.

One of our most astute recruiting coups was getting hold of Fort.
