I take it you're too young to have seen Gary Dempsey then?

I was young - but my memory of Gary Dempsey was him intercepting mark after mark at CHB - he was one of, if not the best ever at this.

Scotty Wynd was great too - courageous. But Demps was the best

Whipping boy McNeil? Has he improved his kicking for goal? If he can add accurate kicking to his repertoire, he’d be good for 1 to 2 goals a game.

That is one thing he always does is that he has intensity and has a crack. He knows that he is playing for a career.

McNeil played some very good football late last year. I wasn’t much of a fan but we have to believe our eyes not our expectations. If he continues with last year’s form he will surprise a few. And will be a regular in the best 22.

The crazy thing is, with his natural talent and athleticism, JUH can rock up to training next week and still kick 40+ this year.

It’s frustrating but he’s one player who probably doesn’t need to do an entire pre season.

Maybe he can, but it's the forward chemistry that would be missing. He might still kick 40, but his lack of preseason could cost the team 30 goals over the season. I think that's more the focus here.

That would be great - any injection of pace in the side will be a massive help.

One of my memories of Gary Dempsey is off him saving the big V in a State game against WA. Against the expected script WA were on the verge of over-running the Vics on the MCG. Dempsey was impassable in the back pocket in the last quarter marking every WA attack. He had a great pair of hands.

Honestly I think that McNeil was finally getting what is needed from him later in the year.

His biggest issue has been an inability to finish his limited opportunities in front of goal*.

A cardinal sin for any player playing in a forward pocket who averages 0.5 goals a game.

*He's not alone in tis regard, but its always going to be a bigger issue for somebody who is on the fringes of the side.

He was a standout last pre-season as well.

Yep he was before my time.

The first match I saw, Round 1 1976, Dempsey had 15 marks against Essendon in a losing side(by 1 point). I had never seen anything like it. I was hooked.
