from the article:

AFL stars Steven May, Tom Lynch and Dion Prestia and have been caught up in a late-night fracas at Sorrento which led to two men needing hospital treatment.
The premiership players were among a group out for Boxing Day at the Mornington Peninsula holiday hotspot which was harassed and attacked at about 2am near the Continental Hotel.
The Herald Sun has been told one aggressor took a swing outside the venue, causing the group to retreat along Point Nepean Rd.
Shortly after, Ambulance Victoria paramedics were called to Point Nepean Rd to pick up a man believed to be one of the troublemakers.
He had upper and lower-body injuries which were described as not life-threatening.
Victoria Police said two men were treated at hospital but it is not known how the second patient got there.
A statement described the incident, which is under investigation by detectives from the Mornington criminal investigation unit, as an affray.
It is unclear where the inquiry will end up as there is believed to be no CCTV at the scene where the men were injured and no statements have been made by the hospitalised pair.
“No official complaint has been received at this time,” a Victoria Police statement said.
Football sources confirmed on Monday that the AFL trio had been among a group which had been caught up in friction generated by other parties.
But sources close to the three players insisted they were not responsible for the injuries to the two men.
A spokeswoman for the Tigers, Prestia and Lynch’s team, said: “Tom Lynch was not present and Prestia saw it happening but in no way was he involved. They weren’t involved in any physical altercation.”
Melbourne Football Club, who May plays for, declined to comment.
The Herald Sun contacted the AFL on Sunday afternoon but it has not responded yet.
Lynch, a powerhouse forward, grew up playing footy in Sorrento and was instrumental in the Richmond premierships of 2019 and 2020.
Creative on-baller Prestia played in the Tigers’ flag triumphs of 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Centre half-back May was a key part of Melbourne’s 2021 premiership triumph and is one of the club’s most important players.
In 2022, he was involved in an altercation with teammate Jake Melksham at the Entrecote restaurant in Prahran.
May’s jaw was broken in a 2013 off-season clash with former Gold Coast Suns teammate Campbell Brown outside a Los Angeles nightclub.
Lynch, May and Prestia all started their AFL careers at the Gold Coast Suns.
Lynch returned to his old stomping ground before Christmas, where he was spotted kicking the footy at the Sorrento Sharks Football Club with Myles Pitt, whose family own’s the Sorrento Hotel.
The duo, who grew up together in the town, were snapped in a photo posted to Lynch’s Instagram on December 21.
“Running session back at the old club!” the caption read.
Mr Pitt, who is married to model Brooke Hogan, helps his parents run the iconic pub, with Lynch understood to be a regular customer during the summer period.
Dion Prestia appeared to be enjoying some down time on the Mornington Peninsula over the weekend, lapping up the sun at Eldridge Estate, a popular winery in Red Hill.
The Richmond star posted a photo of wine glasses and a cheese board overlooking the vineyards on his Instagram story on Sunday.

Yeah, not a ton in that article indicates them actually doing anything wrong. Will wait for further comments from players/club/police, but the language is pretty tame.
I love the way it pretty much implies that the players were set upon by drunken hero w***ers, but then takes care to provide a random potted biography of Steven May’s past controversial incidents…

That plus the random unrelated Prestia insta crap - reminds me of being in some exam where you have to write however many words on a topic and, through lack of actual knowledge, you pull nine tenths out of your arse

Tom Lynch having a kick with the owner's son was also some lovely padding

I learned many things from that alone.

I reckon we can agree that while it was a very humble Herald Sun holiday piece, we have all come away better for reading it.

AFL media, I know it was during COVID but didn't they basically blame the Richmond players for getting attacked at night time at the kebab place as well. Stack and someone else I think?

Sounds like they got attacked, walked away, one bloke followed em and ****ed around and found out. No issues here.

That was similar in terms of how it played out, but different at the time due to the rules about leaving the hubs yeah.
They weren't allowed to be out there in the first place, but i entirely get what you're saying. The other teammate was Callum Coleman-Jones from memory. I think it was Richmond's second covid breach at the time, not to give the shitty AFL media the out at the time, but they tend to watch these things like hawks once something goes wrong the first time

May's been followed pretty hard since that beer in 2019, then the melksham stuff. We're past the draft now so it's quite until round 1, Steven May was already a headliner to throw on the back page + a couple of other players and the club as a whole last season. The media got their article even if it's nothing

I know, it's just funny in a sad way that AFL players used to go out and beat people up, an now they're getting in trouble for getting beaten up essentially lol

The article doesn't imply any wrong doing by the players. No one is saying the players are in trouble.

I am supremely confident the club will not disappoint me for the rest of the year.

I reserve the right to edit this post.
