Cleary will be in the seniors in no time. Some disposal a bit scratchy but his clearance work is great.
Why is Shipley not on an Afl list? Could easily replace a few on our list for starters.
Good effort for the most part today, just missed too many at crucial times.

What a frustrating game. Just wasteful and inefficient and squandered so many chances.

The long bombs to Collingwood defenders I can live with - our forward line was basically Buller, Bowman & a rotating cast of top-up players. What bugged me were the incredibly easy misses from players just not taking their chances. Bowman with two shocking misses from basically right in front. Buller missing a gettable shot that every Pies player seemed to kick. Endemann with the easiest of kicks somehow missing. There's your game right there.

Cleary & Shipley were immense. I understand the punishment but at this point if we don't name Cleary next week then we're just spiting ourselves really. He is a class above and I can see why he was looking likely to start in the 22 this year before his suspension.

Francis & Edwards started the game very strongly but felt the weight of numbers overpowered them as the game went on.

Green looked OK in the ruck but still makes some crucial errors, not helped by the fact the umpires clearly did not want us to win.

Of the non-listed players, I thought Tidemann & Harrison had some good moments.
Pretty good summary. Not sure I can add too much more to that other than Green will not make it to the top level if he cannot develop some strength to his kicking because 30 meters up and under chips aren't cutting it.

Not enough quality cattle and awful in the front third of the ground.

Cleary should be back into seniors soon.

Edwards showed a bit for a while.

Buller just needed to convert one or two more opportunities, but did ok considering it was a lonely day for him up forward.

You'd hope Bowman's just rusty on the comeback from injury and gets involved (positively) more as times goes on.

Francis doing what he does at VFL level.

We could do worse than Shipley in the mid-season draft, if we have a spot or two available.

But we desperately need another listed forward in the front half at least. Ideally, it would've been McLean but we know the coaching/medical staff HATE bringing back experienced players in the VFL.

Unless your name is Luke Parker.

Yes needs to Mike Pyke it and just hand it off. I think he could handball further than he could kick, unique talent there.

If Cleary comes in, it has to be for one of the under performing senior players rather than for the usual scape goats like Corey Warner, Sheldrick, etc, etc.
Time for Hayward, Papley or Florent to fell the heat.

I agree and maybe discretely mention this to the experience guys so they will pull their fingers out tomorrow.

Re Buller, only watched the third but confirmed to me he moves very well for a big man. He competed well, often double teamed and had it not been for a few average moments, would've had a very good quarter. I think he will play AFL this year.

I don't disagree.

I'd like to see him play some midfield time though. To me he is our best developing mid on the list. He showed that over and over in the VFL last year and he showed it again today. Not sure we can afford to be squandering that in the VFL.

But then I don't know the inner workings of the club and how pissed off they were/are at Cleary.

What is it about our first round drafting??? I can't remember the last time we got one right!

Mate, if i knew, I'd be tapping the club on the shoulder and asking for employment in return for being flown round the country to watch all our games with side trips to watch local footy.

I'm pretty sure I've seen him comfortably kick 50 (but can't confirm this). Let's hope he was just having an off day. The third quarter i watched, he looked good around the contest.

Last para is important. Not telling the club was a very immature act.

Match report:

From the VFL website:

Caiden Cleary was back in action and making the most of his opportunities in Sydney's 25-point loss to Collingwood.

The 20-year-old racked up 37 disposals and eight clearances in a dominant display.

Big swingman Aaron Francis also impressed with 26 touches and eight marks, while former Saint Ben Paton slotted in well at his new club with 31 disposals.

2023 first-round draftee Will Green is yet to make his senior debut despite a strong VFL season in the ruck last year, a form line he has continued with 17 disposals, 29 hitouts and seven clearances against the Pies.

Sydney's 2024 first-round draftee Ned Bowman kicked one goal from limited opportunities.

Other Swans in action included Will Edwards (14 disposals), Jack Buller (one goal, 12 disposals) and Indhi Kirk (12 touches).

I hope so. Three times for memory he was about 70 out and lobbed a ball to about 35-40 out on the head of the opposition. Bit of muscle and some leg days and he could be something.

McLean has played two games in the VFL (practice matches, since the VFL season proper didn't start until this weekend).

We desperately needed to add at least one taller player to the senior team, with Melican succumbing to injury. Seems odd to insist McLean should play another VFL game "just because".

Re Shipley, he is excellent at VFL level. Maybe if he'd initially landed at an AFL club less stacked with early round talent he might have got more of a run at it in the AFL. But I doubt he'd ever have been more than a 20-28 player on a list. I think his time has probably passed in terms of playing at AFL level, in part because his body doesn't seem to be that durable. Our VFL regularly loses him for a couple of weeks here, a couple of weeks there, due to soft tissue injuries.

Not such a discouraging performance, if you ask me. Given that we only had 8 listed players playing, we competed well.

Cleary, Francis and Shipley were the standouts.

Will Edwards did well early and faded a bit - but it's his first game back after an injury lay-off (i'm not sure if he played any scratch matches but he spent a fair bit of the pre-season still recovering from his fractured fibula).

Ben Paton was a bit disappointing. One of our better players but did not play according to his talent and experience.

Bowman was also disappointing. Apart from his excellent goal he didn't do much. Has a way to go. Doesn't mean he can't become a great player.

Kirk didn't get much of the ball, but when he did he used it well. He played mostly on the wing.

Jack Buller was very encouraging, also on the comeback trail after an injury interrupted pre-season (as well as injury-ruined 2024). Really hope he can get a clear run at it this season and hopefully crack seniors for some more games.

Will Green is still developing. He hasn't nailed his bread and butter yet (probably because of his body not having filled out yet) but he shows so many other talents. He can kick and pass, has good footy nous, stays involved, great tank.

Of the VFL listed and top-ups, Geddes always gives his all. Tidemann was tidy. Endemann was pretty good. Lloyd was useful. Davis' ball use was a liability. Tom Longmire managed to kick two goals but didn't stand out much apart from that.

Where was Blake Leidler? I was looking forward to seeing him in action. Another injury??
