Agreed I mean more immediate needs. I was hopeful he could fill the Daniher role but I think its becoming more and more apparent hes a pure ruckman. Meaning we are even thinner on KPF stock this year than I thought.

Nobody was ever going to fill his shoes. Really just needed those already in the team to step up and his replacement to allow us to play the way we like to play

From the bits I saw, the commentators were better off not saying anything. No insights, no player recognition, no useful stats, barely any play-by-play description.

I’m pretty sure they were like those Mitchell and Webb snooker commentators, there for the food and drinks and any commentating was purely incidental.

Jimmy T was good across the game. Marshall showed some awareness and poise that others didn’t.

A lot of dropped ball across the park.

Premiership Ruckman Dominates at Lower Level.

Tunstill Assumes Lyons No.1 Midfielder Mantle.

Jury Out as Young Ruckman Struggles with Injury Recovery.

For what it is worth I think it is way too early to make a call on Smith. Confidence in his body will lead to confidence in his game.

Only saw a quarter and a bit. Unbelievably bad commentating. To paraphrase “Henry Smith takes a mark and goes back for a shot at goal. Great kick. Craven has kicked a goal”. I know these guys aren’t professionals, but Smith has been playing vfl for four years. He is almost two feet taller than Craven. How could you possibly confuse them when Craven was standing still with the ball.

Henry gets a free pass for the first few weeks; he’s effectively only doing his pre-season now. Sat out the second half if anyone’s wondering about his low stats.

Okay ....... here's an offering from the first round of VFL (especially for those who didn't/haven't yet seen the game).

My focus was as per the subtitles below (with an eye towards the future).

It's interesting that 5 of those below (Beecken, Craven, Greenaway, Offermans and Marshall) were in the top 7 Fantasy Point scorers for the game.

As mentioned by posters previously, Tunstill was arguably Brisbane's BOG on the day and his highlights can be viewed on the AFL's VFL site ( Tunstill showreel - VFL Rnd 1 ).

As per usual, my videos include the good with the bad ....... they are not just highlights.

(Note: The "commentators" often got the names wrong. It may be better to view without volume if you get confused.)

Recent Draftees:

Sam Marshall #20

Ty Gallop #22

2024 Mid Season Draftees:

Luke Beecken #17

Darcy Craven #45

Recent Academy Graduates: (not certain about whether they are returning to the Academy as over-agers)

Wyatt Greenaway #59

Charlie Offermans #56

Fergus McFadyen #58

Not sure whether this will be a regular offering ................ we'll see how we go.

Thanks Crusha. Worth watching Gallop’s to see how he handled his first run as second ruck.

A gentleman and a scholar. This is good stuff, thanks.

I'm just going to throw this out there .............

I know Beecken came to us, and is most likely projecting as, a rebounding half back, but ......
Could he possibly develop into a midfield option, maybe in the Dunkley mould or as a "run with" negating type ???

I don't know what his tank is like, but he does have a good tackling technique, is reasonably quick (more so than "Dunks"), has quite goods hands in close and apart from the occasional miss (not unlike Dunkley) has a reasonably good kick (at the least, it's more aesthetic than "Dunks").

I raise this after reviewing last weeks VFL game, and will be watching with this in mind going forward.

Thanks Crusha. Worth watching Gallop’s to see how he handled his first run as second ruck.

Cheers.
I agree with your observations in the Roster Thread about how he went about it.

Both opposing ruckmen were way taller, but when he got his positioning right he was able to move them out of the way.
And his repeat efforts and strong tackling have impressed me, even going back to last year (especially after he was dropped from the Allies side after their first u18 Champs game - I think Mitch Hahn's "kick up the butt" worked wonders.

Comms struggling to ID players on the wide shots. Wonder why that is.
