Expansion 22,118-strong crowd @ Gabba

Your hatred of the AFL is blinding you.

Sigh.

Since the gabba upgrade, the QLD government have completely rebuild Lang Park, and Build the GC titans home ground. All without any funding from the NRL, Soccer or Rugby. Not to mention whatever they put into Dairy Farmers stadium up in Townsville.

So what? None of that makes it any more sensible to fork out more money for an AFL venue. If anything, the fact that they have spent so much money on stadia already makes it even less sensible to spend more now.

That seems a disproportionate allocations of resources against AFL and cricket.

Hmmm funny that. Which winter sport is more popular in QLD, again?

The QLD government have also received a $5b windfall from the minning boom.

I'd suggest that they might be looking to spend some of their mining windfall (however much it is) on things such as health, education, police etc.

You must be pretty happy now ,with the way North are performing right now .
What did you think of last's night game . Pretty good , eh ?
A grand advertisement for Australian Football .
All credit to the Roos .
:thumbsu:
.

Yeah, it's never good to lose, but our boys were honorable in defeat. Good times ahead for the mighty North Melbourne Football Club.

Who do you follow, again?

When you look back at the position North were in and the position they are in
now it's it's really great . Not only have we not lost a historical team , the Roos are stronger than ever . They're not being relocated and because of that we're gaining two extra teams - both grassroots rather than relocated .
:)

I'm stunned by the current population figures for Qld. that they are not promoting Aussie Rules in the sleepy state. It seems that the Joh factor is still prevelant. Time they opened up their borders and allowed a "foreign" sport to flourish. Or is it Bligh of bounty fame that is running the state?

Sigh.

We can only hope. Still yet to turn over a sod of dirt at the proposed Griffith University/Gold Coast Hospital, despite constantly talking about it (Skilled Park got built nice & quick though. At least we know where Anna 'Titan' Bligh's priorities lie). We wouldn't mind seeing the Rapid Transit System actually underway as well, here on the Gold Coast. In fact I would have thought that would take priority over funding the currently unsponsored Gold Coast Indy. It's a pity the tourism budget continues to be underfunded, but as long as their is a football ground at Robina, for the privately owned & operated Titans, what does any of this other stuff matter anyway?

24,400 today.

A little worrying given the record crowd between the 2 clubs in Brisbane (29999) was only 2 years ago, when the Lions were on the slippery slope down the ladder, so the increased performance this year doesn't seem to be increasing crowds much at all.

The early timeslot doesn't help either, their crowds this year have been quite good, just the poor North one and this was probably expected (i tipped 23k).

They have only 2 Gabba games in the next 8 rounds (good one AFL) vs Adelaide and WC both being Saturday night matches, they should both get 26-29k each (depending on form) anything less would be disappointing.

They also have;
Rnd 20 vs Western Bulldogs
Rnd 21 vs Carlton

Both could draw 30k+ if current form is anything to go by.

Only 5000 less than Carlton v Freo at TD & higher than Melbourne v Nth Melb at TD in Round 4. If the number of people currently on the Gold Coast is any guide, the crowd is not such a surprise. Certainly the NRL would kill for a similar crowd for a Melbourne Storm game in Melbourne.

3 home games in a row and playing against Fremantle.

Geelong-North Melbourne got 38 000 on a Friday night. Divide that by 2 and that is 19 000 spectators each. We had a lot more Brisbane supporters at the game today.

People tend to forget crowd numbers are expanded by the fact 2 local teams play each other. If we got 19 000 away supporters to the Gabba, we would have over 42 000 at every game.

I thought there would be more people there yesterday. A perfect sunny Sunday afternoon. A holiday weekend.
A game they were expected to win by a lot.

A lot of people on the roads getting to the Gabba, the Caravan and Boating show was on, and it was gridlock for miles.

The AFL has fixtured us very poorly this year, seven of our 11 home games at the Gabba have been played in the first half of the season, with four out of 11 remaining with half a season to go.

Having three home games in a row is off putting as people don't have the money to go and people here go away for the long weekend to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts. We have a history of buliding up above average crowd attendances in the second half of the season and four games isn't enough.

The AFL has got to stop using the computer fixturing program, computers cluster up things all the time. I want the Lions in the future to have a home and away season, which means we play home-away-home-away etc all season (like the Dockers and Eagles), don't want double or triple ups anymore.

In addition to this, Essendon and Richmond haven't travelled up here and won't this year and didn't last season, and those clubs draw bigger crowds here. Moreover, the AFL fixture low attendance teams such as Melbourne, Fremantle and the Kangaroos against us at the Gabba - good job AFL, get it right.

Lions should have one week gabba, one week away. No double, triple things going on. Essendon should always come up.

Yeah, 25500 at Lang Park the night before. However, my point is that Lions crowds are artifically inflated by a large band of non-paying Gabba Trust Members and Cricketers Club Members whereas the Broncos don't the luxury of a good crowd before they even get their first paying customer.

LMFAO! The Broncos give away more tickets then any other sporting team in Australia.

Up against Live TV, Gabba ticket prices and I think they need more night games.

Why wasn't there a Sunday night game yesterday for the public holiday? Good opportunity for the Lions?

Give Lions more Friday night game IMO.

Yep, perfect opportunity for the AFL to schedule a match out of the ordinary for a Brisbane home game.

Btw- comparing Lions crowds to NRL crowds or even other (AFL) states crowds is a bit silly, comparing Lions crowds to their past seasons attendances is probably the better way to see how they're tracking.

Your right, but no one is talking about adding teams to Melbourne. They are talking about adding teams to Qld hence the scrutiny of Qld crowds.

This surely wins 'Poor Crowd Excuse of the Year'.

Hey, Littleduck - as the creator of this thread, I've been waiting for a new updated thread, entitled -

Re: 30,000-strong crowd @ Gabba (OK - 29,964 to be exact).

Meanwhile the Broncos v West Tigers Friday night blockbuster at the bigger, better located Lang Park got how many? Surely at least 40,000 in its heartland territory? Surely?

Great crowd it was vs the fairly average drawing Adelaide (in Brisbane that is).

3 more home games to go at the Gabba.

Rnd 16 vs WC Sat night- 26-27k
Rnd 20 vs Dogs Sat night- 28-32k (more if both are in form)
Rnd 21 vs Carl Sat night- 28-30k (more if Carl going for top eight).
