You guys have got to be frustrated by this. Coming from a club where players were not exactly in their best condition the last couple of years I can sympathise. If something didn't change this year then I don't think it would have been accepted and Simpson and Co would be out on their arse.

Thankfully it appears that the culture has turned around and preseason pics suggest the entire list is on board. Traditional "fatties" in McGovern, Ryan and Naitanui appear to be better versions of themselves this February.

What I am missing is the tolerance of the Essendon faithful to this Groundhog Day approach to fitness. I recall at the time of coach changeover that it was clearly explained that any future missteps on fitness would not be tolerated. The blueprint was to do the basics properly, train with discipline etc, etc.

Ray Charles can see that the way Stringer has presented does not align with this approach and yet the club covers for him again. "He won't be a power mid", "His body allows him to be a dynamic forward" etc. All rubbish. Call it what it is.

The greatest value Stronger has to EFC right now is as an example of what the club won't tolerate. Call him out. Draw a line.

The faithful should be demanding it.

I actually like Jakey a little plump and vulnerable to injury. I also like him feisty and fisty with his teammates. I like him when he gets a very poor tasting tattoo on his plump belly.

I get really really peeved when West Coast supporters tell me I shouldn’t like all these things. It’s my goddam right to like Jakey for all his vices and foibles. I hope he sits in the goalsquare against the Eagles and rolls into an accidental soccered goal to win the game against them by a point this year after doing a hamstring running through the banner.

I for one will not be forcing the club to make an example out the poor bloke.

I do realize you only ever log on to have a shot at Stringer.

And I have said a number of times in a number of posts that he has had seasons where he has let himself down. 2020 being the last one. Not sure what more I have to say. He was off the rails in 2016 as well.

What I will say is if you are in personal best shape in December and January 2 years in a row and then get injured and not make round 1 then it is not a result of professionalism issues. The last two years he has had groin issues brought on by increased workload. That is the fact.

This year even the coach has said they have sacrificed conditioning in an effort to get him ready by round 1 .

All I have done is go with the facts I know. No personal bias.

sure, i'm not disputing the facts you know.

but here's a fact. calories consumed > calories burned = weight/fat gain. i don't care if he can't train or not, it's not ok to be overweight when you are an "elite" athlete.

i know niggling injuries can occur in players who weigh their food to the last gram, but the amount of issues he's had with his body are in my opinion, down to his lack of professionalism.

i'm very disappointed, because he's extremely important to us "when fit". that disclaimer has followed him around for a long time now, and i've had enough, personally. this is aside from his poor on field play and leadership at times when he has been fit.

anything we get from Jake from here on out is a complete bonus, imo

i think the importance needs to be sidelined now.

as you say, anything = bonus. And if we're completely honest with ourselves perhaps its time to look to a future without him.
I'd play Jones as 3rd tall...or Voss...or Baldwin

would love to eat my words, but 2018-2020 he was everything from flash in the pan to non-starter.
In 2021 he had an unbelievable year
2022 was back to 2018-19 form...with some aspects of 2020.

statistically, i think we know where expectations should be set.

Drafted at 94 kg . Playing at 96 kg 10 years later .
Going by your description he should be 100 kg plus.

Player who is clearly carrying too much fat for a professional athlete continually gets injured...

Just move him on. I'm not fussy about picks, etc. I am aware that it takes all types but that only applies when said types can get to the line and consistently play good football.

He is not a player you rebuild with. He is the player you bring in to add matching winning influence when a game or 2 really matters (also when you've established a culture).

It made sense following the promise of 2017. I see little reason for it now (despite him being the only match winner we have).

no i said he should be fitter. he's supposed to be an elite athlete

your argument that "he's injured and can't train, therefore he gets fat" doesn't stand up in the elite sport setting.

I have said what I have based on what I have been told from a few sources and personal experience (myself and observing others )
Nothing more to add.

Some players trim down once at a pro club. Jobe for one.

reckon that boat sailed post-'21. i was surprised we didn't have a bigger fight on our hand for him.
My guess is he genuinely enjoys the environments that back him and has that sense of loyalty to a club. So likely wasn't chasing offers outside Essendon.

I wasn't opposed to trading him at peak value.
It was an outlier year, and we're still off the pace where he can have an impact.

From Brad Scott's interview.

He had been playing sore for most of 2022 and being a power type player he lacked the power because of his groin issues. So the plan was to strip things back and train him up in the right area to get him back to full power. If that sets him back in conditioning for round 1 then they will live with that.

You can say that again. Should've started with stripping back some of that tummy fat.

Ayrton Wooley has given us another contender for longest article ever posted on the Essendon website;

Some interesting quotes as relates to Jake Stringer:

Quote 1
On Stringer, the Dons’ fitness boss [Sean Murphy] is adamant the reality of the work he’s put in doesn’t match much of the external chatter about him.

“He’s never going to be an aerobic beast; his strong attributes are his speed and power," he said.

As far as Murphy is concerned, Stringer has done more than enough over the pre-season, even if it hasn’t all be with the main group.

Still there’s no hiding from a level of disappointment when Stringer leaves the track early nearing the end of the session.

“It just got really sore,” he fumes as he jogs into The Hangar and onto the treatment table for some immediate testing of his hamstring.

Unfortunately, scans would later show a low-grade strain, ruling him out of the clash with the Suns.

“It happened while kicking, not moving at speed, so we’ll look at that.”

But this is being viewed as a minor setback in the scheme of Stringer’s season.

“He has some clear markers he needs to hit in his pre-training testing which has been a focus of ours and Brad’s. With Jake it’s all about a premium attention to detail.”

There’s a confidence this will pay off in the long run.

Quote 2
Before the players head out to training Jake Stringer grabs recruit Sam Weideman for a final discussion over his positioning in front of the projected training vision.

“[Jake’s] footy IQ is off the charts,” one staff member nods.

I would bet my bottom dollar stringer has abnormally tight ham strings so he uses the wrong muscles to powet himself. He looks like his pelvis tilts forwards instead of back. Correct this position and the rest of the muscles may work normally again
This is what I mean

Sounds likely (probably for a lot of players and people generally who sit on their tail bone slouching in a chair all day and night), but fixing it is easier said than done.
