Whilst many of our players have had interrupted pre-seasons it sounds like Stringer is as fit as he's ever been in his time here

In the midst of his club’s wretched summer injury run, Essendon gun Jake Stringer says he’s never been in better shape after experiencing one of his best and smoothest pre-seasons of his AFL career.

A host of key Bombers have, at different stages over the past few months, battled a range of injuries or suffered setbacks, including Joe Daniher (groin), Cale Hooker (hip), Dylan Shiel (knee) David Zaharakis (knee), Dyson Heppell (foot), Michael Hurley (shoulder) and Orazio Fantasia (hip).

However Stringer, who battled foot, knee and hamstring issues to play 19 of a possible 23 games in 2019, has not just been a constant presence on the track, but also one of Essendon’s best trainers.

In his eighth AFL pre-season, Stringer recently ran a personal best in the 2km time trial, slashing a whopping 20 seconds off his previous top time.

Asked on SEN Breakfast how he was going physically, Stringer cheekily said: “I’m borderline flying at the minute … nah I’m going well.”

The 25-year-old said it’d been “one of the hardest pre-seasons I’ve ever done”. He hailed the influence of the Bombers’ new head of strength and conditioning Sean Murphy, who’s come across from Hawthorn and “really tested us physically and mentally”.

“Not being injured is a massive part and I don't think I've missed a session the whole pre-season, which is all you can ask for when you go into a pre-season is complete as many sessions as you can. I’d be probably in the top one or two at the club that hasn’t missed,” Stringer told SEN on Friday morning.

Asked if it’d been one of his smoothest AFL pre-seasons yet, Stringer declared: “Yeah, by far.

“Last year was pretty good, but this year’s been taken to a new level with Sean Murphy coming across. He's really pushed the boundaries with me.

“It's been a hard slog and, don't worry, I'm looking forward to playing and getting out of this pre-season phase.”

Even though Stringer is “flying”, he said seven or eight teammates are still not in full training, but the “majority of them were running”.

“Not everything's gone to plan, obviously. There's been a few blokes that are still not quite into full training, but that's part of football and part of the pre-season. You’ve just got to deal with whatever comes,” Stringer said.

He later added: “We’re in a great position to able to springboard into the season and hopefully get a few more of these top echelon blokes back.”

The first-round draft pick kicked 98.55 for the Bulldogs in 2015 and 2016 before being traded ahead of the 2018 season to the Bombers, where he’s spent recent summers training with the on-ballers.

Stringer said the plan was still for him to play a mixture of midfield and forward minutes this season, but added he’d been training primarily with the attacking group this pre-season and “honing in on my craft as a forward”.

Stringer said Essendon’s succession plan, which will see senior coach John Worsfold gradually hand the reins to assistant Ben Rutten throughout 2020, was working well. He said Worsfold was at the club everyday and engaged with the players, but Rutten took charge of all tactical discussions and meetings.

“The work that John and Ben have done together has been absolutely outstanding and literally the smoothest transition that you could possibly ever see. It's a credit to both of them how well it's actually gone,” Stringer said.

“I couldn’t be happier with where the club is at the minute.”

Stringer said there’d be a noticeable but not dramatic change to the club’s game plan this season.

“It’ll definitely be a lot more consistent,” Stringer said.

“From a whole learning (process) and even in training, you’re seeing it more and more every time we’re doing bits of match ‘sim’. I think it’ll be very noticeable when people come to watch us.”

Are they though? in this thread? I haven't read anything overly emotional. The worst that I could find in here was this post.

edit: and now YH has posted with something in response after the original post. I don't think that you can say people generally have been malicious or vitriolic when speaking of Jake.
Its been popping up in other threads that people want him gone. He's a fat this and lazy that. Screw him. Nah blah blah. It's made a few threads unreadable for me. People have to understand that not everyone has the same physical attributes. Stringer is big and heavy and strong always will be. Not everyone can shed those kgs.
Does that make him lazy not necessarily.

In addition every time there's an update on his trade status you can count on at least one response about him being toxic or more trouble than his worth.

What has he actually done while at the club to deserve this reputation?
The alleged behaviour Hank brought up is from his time at the dogs, he has been here for 8 years now and not a single newsworthy item re bad behaviour or issues with teammates.

I have no issue with people wanting to trade him because of his age/our list imbalance, but the animosity is so OTT for a guy who has brought us a lot of memorable moments over the journey.

Everyone has an arch enemy and a friend in every environment they are involved in.

Totally agree

There hasn't been a lot to enjoy for a long time. Stringer at least brought us some good highlights and he also is prepared to fly the flag. Pretty much something that isn't over abundant in our team
Genuine match winner and game breaker at times and against good teams when the rest of our players looked inferior to the opposition, it was nice to be proud of someone in those circumstances. Copped unfair criticism last year when it was eventually revealed he couldn't train for 4 months pre season because he copped a flying knee to the head in the last match of 22. I don't think his 40 goals this year were of the quality of a few years back and the decline will continue not to mention the balance issues our forward line has.

Mostly right.
I’m 100% with you.

But there was the small matters of:
  • Bringing in undesirables into the rooms (what ever that means)
  • Not coming back in as good shape as should have

Personally, I think clubs are better when they recognise all sorts and don’t require all to be robots. Cats do it well. Sydney don’t (but they’ve done ok). Imagine if Dane Swan or Vander were closed out of footy for being roughies?

Anyway… 42 goals is a hill I’ll die on.

Geez the hate for Stringer on here is real. Plenty of players request trades that don't eventuate and end up coming back to their club with zero issues. Stringer hasn't even requested a trade. Other than a rumour that he said to somebody that he's played his last game at Essendon, all we actually know is he's looking for more than a 1 year deal. Wow, what a terrible guy! Turf him, what a disaster if he comes back! Lol
Eh, I used a conditional 'if.'

He's big boned, is all.

Yep, completely outside of his control. Ronald and the colonel basically had a gun to his head…

So you agree he was horrible selfish guy with a terrible attitude before he decided he wanted to leave us?
Do you agree that judging a 30-year-old guy who despite being under the microscope like few other people will ever experience, with essentially zero indiscretions for the past 8+ years, on something he allegedly did in his early 20's is pretty dumb?

It's also classic football supporter mentality to start launching personal attacks on a guy the second he considers maybe leaving the team you support. Seriously pretty grim by you.

People have been saying Jake is a shit bloke the entire time. You seem to be the one who chooses to ignore it because of the colours he wears. A shit bloke is a shit bloke regardless of how far back it was they were cheating on their family with a school child.

Yep, anyone who does something poor at some point in their life is a shit bloke for the rest of their life regardless of how they live it. That's how it works right?

Anyway it's probably just time to either keep your personal character judgements of him to yourself, or maybe go yodel over on the doggies board where they still enjoy passing judgement on him 8 years later.

Again it seems to be just about the club colours to you. People have different values. Grooming kids is one of the things I don't really agree with and yeah, not something I forgive.
