Delisted #26: Kaine Baldwin - Not offered a contract for 2025, thanks Kaine! 26/8

The list spot is a reasonable point/ How many young KPF's can we hold on the list? How many young KPD's can we hold on the list? how many small flankers can we hold on the list?

The thing going for Kaine is that he is young and only Eyre as competition in that role (developing KPF) so perhaps he may very well be given a third year on the rookie list. Be it make or break but I don't necessarily see it with Kaine... Yet.

Baldwin I don't think makes it but one more year on the rookie list will be offered imho, unless we have an intention of taking a KPF with our first round pick in this years draft.
Given it sounds like all of eyre, brand and mcbride are seen as backs, he's one of 3 genuine tall forwards we have, so if all were equal, id cut one of the backs first.

Baldwin's 'youth' is not going for him.

He doesn't move like a kid.

Felt like he willed himself into the contest today which shows he has character if not overwhelming ability.

Whilst I don't think Kane has the gifts to make it at this level I wouldn't bet against him based purely on his determination alone.

My concern is the list spot.

The comparison with Cahill was a good one, sorry I've forgotten who made it, in the sense that there is clearly a smart, league level footballer in the body of a non-league level footballer.

The question to ask is how is he going to kick goals on AFL key defenders? I just don't see it. Eyre, on the other hand, he's a more physically gifted version of Harry Jones. He might be a long burn like Taberner was but 198cm with all the physical tools Eyre basically becomes Taberner if it clicks.

What's Baldwin going to look like? A less explosive Tom Hawkins the height of Darling? Super long odds on that coming off.
He’s 3 games in as a key forward give me a spell. Go and look at nick larkeys stats from his first couple of games or many others in their first couple of games. Key forwards take time, let alone with how slow we move the ball in our forward line. Baldwin is a great contested mark, was running a bit under the ball today. That will improve with experience. Eyre has shown almost nothing at vfl level, yes he has athleticism but really struggles with the basics as a key forward.

Tough intro to senior footy. He was thrown in some pretty deep water. Happy he got the experience but now its time to go and kick a few bags in the 2s and gain more confidence in the knees

It's a credit to Kaine he has even managed to play league footy this year. A young KPP often takes time, let alone coming off significant injuries, and even more so in our current football club and our lack of proper development.

The yo - yo we've put him through is more down to our mismanagement of a football club and through necessity he's played. Good on him but now, hopefully we can sort out shit out and Kaine can play year out at VFL level and kick 40 + goals

Completely agree. Its a hard initiation and he showed that he has character to compete at the highest level (the tackles, 1 of them leading to his first goal).

There was a time when he was chasing a ball to the boundary last week, under a fair bit of pressure from behind. He collected the ball and took the tackle, but most other AFL players would have zig zagged and found space. It was so obvious he still doesn't trust the knees.

The pressure acts are super promising for a young KPF as are a few other little things that show he's a footballer.. a few moments in the ruck against Grundy, a few examples of field kicking class.

As a super young KPF it's ok to not be super involved. I think everyone will feel better if we see Baldwin A) get off the ground in a marking contest and B) show some lateral movement. I wouldn't be surprised if that's largely confidence related at the moment. Maybe he gets through this year and works on agility during the off-season the way others go away and work on sprinting.

The reality is if Francis and Jones were fit he would have been playing VFL all year to build confidence in his body, with maybe some games late.

Injuries have forced him into the team well before he is ready, and I defy any forward to perform well with how we are moving the ball at the moment, Wright aside.

He needs time and ability to build up his strength and explosiveness again.

In the end, the main objective of a forward is to kick goals and for a kid who should be doing that at reserves level, he is doing so.

My gripe is yo - yo'ing him in and out of the senior side for the past month.

Keep him in for 2 - 3 weeks or just play him at VFL level.

Hard to argue with Bruno on this.

I guess the caveat is, what were his athletic abilities like before he did his ACLs? Maybe he was indeed as fast as Tex Walker.

maybe after he's played more than a handful of games at any level? he's on the rookie list lmao get a grip
Im not petitioning for him to be delisted if that's what you are assuming?

People continually bang on about Kaine coming back from two knees like it's some sort of su[er human effort. IT's great and all, my question was simply when does that point become history and we focus on what he is doing? (for which I like what he is doing)

i'd say after this season, let him rack up some games (ideally vfl so he can kick some goals and build confidence) and reassess in the off season, the only reason he's playing seniors is because our cupboards are bare for KPFs and they need a body there

Sooo, at the end of the season and the "coming back from two knee redo's" phrase can be removed?

i think it's something you need to consider when reviewing his performance for the year, purely because of the amount of football he's missed, after that you can probably rate him based on his runs on the board. weird thing to get hung up on though lol

Who is hung up on this? I just raised a question that I thought was fairly reasonable
