Re: 27. Jason Laycock

got to give him 1 more year. we need him at the moment for team balance as back up ruckman. ryder and or hill likely to be need to play in a key poisiton posts at various stages given the loss of Lucas Lloyd & McPhee. Hope he can string a few games togethor, remain injury free, and wind back the clock to that great Anzac game he played soooo long ago

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

I think his luck has run out. Almost lasted till xmas which might be a new record for him.

You'll find him in his familiar position of walking the boundary line at Windy Hill... compression bandage on troublesome calf.

I don't see how his luck can have run out when he never had any.;)

Admittedly, he could have done more and would have left himself in a more secure position instead of fighting for a spot on the list.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

Knights also said that he had an excellent attitude to rehab and it was probably trying too hard to get back that contributed to the latest injury. Laycock - trying - hard - - - whoa.

I'm an optimist, but I think he's apparent laziness is probably too imbedded in our consciousnesses. I mean, I was at that Richmond game (Bowden the businessman), sitting behind the goals. Laycock was playing out of the square, and it was frustrating seeing him do these apparently half-arsed pissy little leads, pointing out in front of him. But there was always space where he was pointing, and I think now (especially after rewatching games on Footy Flashbacks) it wasn't laziness but supreme confidence. As if he was saying, "Just boot it into this empty pocket and I'll mark the thing". Cos he was grabbing everything that day. But my first thought was that he had an complete aura of laziness. Maybe he deserves one last real chance from everyone (i.e. totally remove the lazy tag from him until he gives us reason again to apply it), cos it really could be confidence. Cos he's a freak. Perhaps overconfidence in his youth, and if so, surely that's something behind him now, with all that's happened (Paddy, Bellchambers, getting a rocket from James Hird).

But as I said, I'm an optimist.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

my personal belief is that his mind hasnt fully been about football over the last few years, i'm not a parent so i cant comment from experience, but im sure that starting a family would cause a lot of people to not put 100% into their jobs, and i believe this is where Jason has fallen off!! however now he has his family, he needs to shift his focus to providing for them and to provide for them he has to play football!!

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

Saw him @ Windy Hill Friday and he looks in terrific shape.
Looks to have taken a bit of bulk off.

I reckon Jason is going to surprise a few people this year. He is a very good mark and if they play him up forward with this new body shape he could pose a few problems for other teams who might be playing their 3rd defender on him.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

Awesome news. He's definitely go the ability to be a really dangerous resting forward; sure hands and a very reliable shot for goal.

Perhaps he's trimmed down in order to play up forward more than ruck.

I reckon thats the idea.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

he's always been in some sort of shape.
round is a shape.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

He's an important, and despite what some people say, he's a talented player.

Hilley ain't getting younger and Bellchambers is a few years away.

Jason has never had much luck with injuries, which has hampered his pre-seasons and he's struggled with consistency. If he can get over that, we could have a game turner on our hands.

This is what bothers me. Some people try to make out like he's a hack. I still remember the gasps in the crowd when in one of his very first games he took a one grab pack mark in the wet against the blues. Then the Anzac day game when he was B.O.G in the first half.

He's had horrible luck, but the guy is seriously talented and if we have him fit for a full season he will prove a lot of people wrong IMO.

His debut game in 2004, in fact. I was at the ground that day and he didn't drop a ball. Didn't get much of it, but the raw talent was there for all to see.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

There is deffinately a tendancy to confuse perceptions of JL's attitude and the frustraion that the guys career has been with his considerable talent.

For all the hype surrounding some of the AFL ruckman going around there are few that I have seen that mark and kick the ball as soundly as he does. I don't see him being as prolific a ball winner as McIntosh, Cox or Clarke but he is a better key position prospect* than any of those players. His ruck work also seemed quite natural and well though out.

The problem is that my assessments are based on games played a very long time ago. Hopefully the injuries are over and he becomes the automatic inclusion in our side that he should be.

*More of a big man ruckman than a little man style ruckman.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

It also bemuses me that just because he may look iconic and not really trying doesn't mean that he is not, nobody knows except himself.

Dimitar Berbatov was percieved the same way, then statistics proved he ran more km's per game time than any other United player.

Re: 27. Jason Laycock

^^Yes - I think his apparent laziness is actually confidence in his natural talent. Which can itself be a problem but I'm willing to grade his career so far based on his performance this year (injuries finally permitting).
