Haven't seen a poll regarding this so I'll get one started. Lots of different options to look at as R2 this year - especially for those not backing in Gawn alongside Preuss.

For the sake of this poll I'll leave out Grundy and Gawn...which ruckman gets it done in 2019? (You can vote twice). Any roughies you're eyeing off?

Currently rolling with Stef and Goldy, but I fear this could backfire big time if big O and Campbell are playing as well.

Witts is the one I keep thinking about. Kreuzer as well if he is fit.

Think Witts could be a good pick. In the right age bracket and has improved each year. Will still take balls to pick him though as he probably doesn't get enough of the pill around the ground

Personally I have English as my second ruck currently but **** me I'm not enjoying this position. Don't think there is a single safe ruck outside of Grundy which means the position is wide open. I would be keen to roll the dice on someone like Clarke/Fort/Sweet if any of them get early games and then have the potential to move them on to Mummy once some coin has been made. It would even give a look at those shaping up to be top two rucks and help with a decision there

Last year lots of people jumped off Grundy because of Cox now everyone wants to do the same with Gawn this year.

Gawn is 27 and has been in the top 2 rucks twice in the last 3 years and only didnt go all 3 due to injury. He is also the 2nd most selected ruck at 18% ownership so if you dont pick him and he continues his form this year then you will struggle to match his scores.

Its not worth the headache picking a cheap 2nd ruck.

To be honest I think picking both devalues other lines significantly. If you're saving 150k+ on a cheaper R2, that money is solidifying another premium elsewhere. Upgrade target for me

Ive heard Tom Campbell is training the house down and is a chance to ruck alongside or take Goldys spot. A massive concern.

Brisbane board seem pretty sure that Martin will play, but by end of year will not be #1 ruck with Big O and Archie Smith impressing. His back problems is a worry. Also, does he find as much of the pill with a stronger midfield and team this year?

Jacobs is cooked. I think ROB is ready to step up.

Which brings me to Witts. Prime age of 26. Consistent 95 average for two years. A more competitive Gold Coast outfit. An easy ruck draw in his first 5 games. And has shown a high floor and occasional high ceiling.

I'm running with Witts right now...

Personally I can't see Tom Campbell doing anything to displace Goldy, especially if Preuss struggled to get a game.

Agree with the rest of your points. Crows board seem divided in regards to who will start the season rucking and wouldn't surprise to see ROB rucking by seasons end.

I do like Witts. Tackles like a madman. And you're right in his early season easy ruck draw. Just needs to find more of the pill but with the new ruck rules he could be benefited perhaps

In the WAFL Zac Clarke was top three for ruckmen in disposals, contested possessions, hitouts, hitouts to advantage and score involvements. Held goalless only three times, kicked 14 goals from his last seven games and in his last 11 games he averaged 137 ranking points, 17 disposals, 45 hitouts and 1.7 goals. 270k.

Big JLT watch. Imagine the beefing up of your side if Clarke shows something early.

Apparently he didn't train during the season because of his knees, maybe a freo fan can confirm this?

There was a stat put forward by the boys on the coaches panel podcast either last year or the year before that suggested that there has never been a time (fantasy wise) when the top two ruckmen have been the same two years in a row.

I'm going English for R2. Priced at 61, if he is given 1st ruck duties I find it hard to see him going below 80. Assuming Grundy is going to be top 2, I can wait and see who will join him.

That's exactly my thinking. I'll get Grundy too, but could certain imagine it being Gawn + someone new, instead of Grundy + someone new. Fingers crossed!

Darcy on my radar for sure, just need sandilands gone! Price at 76 you would think he can at-least go 83+ will be solid for half a season whilst the number 2 ruck shapes up!

Clarke will only play for Essendon as a ruck if Bellchambers isn't available. As a second ruck/forward, he'll be competing with Daniher, McKernan, Brown, Stewart, Hooker for the tall forward roles. Of those, only Daniher (if fit) is a lock. Whether we go 2 or 3 is also unknown.

So I'd consider Clarke pretty risky unless he shows exceptional JLT form.

Yeah agreed can’t see the appeal!

Sad but true, I'm really not sold on any of the rucks except for Grundy.

I currently have Clarke in my side but have already accepted he'll almost definitely have to come out of my side. As you've elaborated above he'd have to have an exceptional couple of JLT games, or if Bellchambers got injured.

If Preuss wasn't picked up by Dees I'd be thinking about Gawn in a different light. I'm not saying Gawn won't have a good season and odds are come the end of the season he'll be a top two ruckman so I don't think those picking Gawn/Grundy to set and forget are silly. However it's pretty proven that ruckman playing in a side with a second ruck won't score as well, for Preuss to join the Dees I find it hard not to imagine certain promises were made.

If Bellchambers gets injured there will likely be a run on Clarke or Draper, whoever is picked for Round 1.

No certainty whatsoever for me with R2 so I’m taking a punt on English. In all likelihood I’m probably a year early and 2020 is probably when he’ll really go bang. Having said that, he’s priced at 61 which he should cover with ease and a similarly-priced Mumford is a decent backup plan from round 3 onwards, so we’ll get to have a decent look at English in the first couple of rounds. If he’s going great guns he stays, if he’s not then it’s a straight swap for an underpriced Mummy. So it’s really not as risky a pick as it seems.

The cash freed up by spending $446k for English rather than $808k for Gawn, $681k for Witts or $678k for Goldy is really handy to be spent elsewhere.

Will also be keeping a close eye on Clarke though. If he looks likely to get a regular gig and average around the 70 mark (big ifs) then he’s probably too cheap to pass up as basically an expensive rookie. Could easily be convinced to give him English’s spot at R2 and pocket even more cash if all looks well.

Haven't had Kreuzer in my side since his knee issues. Witts has spent the most amount of time in there - with English not far behind.

Makes me wonder how much difference there is between picking Kreuzer and English...one is injury prone and a possible trade later on. The other has question marks on output and is a guaranteed trade later on too.
