Retired #3: Paul Chapman

J Hunt. Pretty much couldn't get into the side.
Corey. There are a bunch of guys trying to get that midfield spot. Pressure is on, not off.
Pods. Less pressure. But Vardy, Kersten, Walker, and maybe even Brown want that spot.
Chappy. I agree, he could have created a lot of pressure.

To be honest, this 'cull' isn't the one that's going to relieve a lot of pressure on the kids.
It's the next one that will do that.

We are going to need to be really setup for this one or we are stuffed.

Anyway, I'll POQ back to our board now :D

Yeah in light of this I'm not sure what else Geelong could have done re Chapman. They have too many guys in that 'might retire soon' bracket and a good list manager should be trying to get some sort of succession plan happening to ease the blow when it eventually falls.

Bomber fans would do well to remember that while at the moment we have a large contingent of players in that 21-24 bracket; unless a lot get moved on in the meantime in a decade's time we'll have the same problem of a large and very important percentage of the list in danger of retiring with a couple of seasons of each other and causing problems for the list managers. Don't be too hard on the Cats for doing what they did because it could well be us in the same position, trading two time Brownlow Medalist Jake Melksham to Carlton for a late pick in 8 years time.

No Guthrie wasn't the direct Chapman replacement. But it did open up a spot in the 22.
I agree with you about loyalty.

And there's absolutely no guarantee that the new kid you bring in is going to be worthy of polishing a champions boot laces.
Everyone on the Geelong board knew Chappy would never walk happily.
We've been discussing it for 3 years.

And not because he's a prick or something, but because he is a fierce competitor. He will never want to stop.

This really is a subject to be discussed in 3 years or so to know if what Geelong are doing is the correct move. They made Milburn and Mooney finish. That has worked.

The 3 they didn't want to stop was Ling, Ottens, and Scarlett. And I think history now shows that they were right in trying to keep them. Because those 3 ripped a hole in our side. Irrespective of where we have finished on the ladder.

Of the 5 that have left I thought only Chappy and Pods could have gone around again.
And I think we had to make a call on Pods. He's too good for VFL but it's holding up the development of our future structures.

i.e. We need Vardy up forward with Kersten too. Not in the ruck.
And with Pods in they tried (and failed) to fit Vardy in.

Sorry about the sidetrack on Pods. But I think it's relevant to what they seem to be trying to do with making calls on our older players.

As I have said numerous times, I can't really find fault with anything Geelong have done for nearly the last 8 years to be honest.. on or off the field.

I agree with most of your post.. I just think they made the wrong call on Chappy for a host of different reasons.. but not to worry.. EFC will be the winner out of this.. I guess growing up in Geelong, with a family of mad keen GFC supporters.. has given me a soft spot for the cats and I was just disappointed that on of your champions didn't get to finish his career being chaired off Kardinia Park.. if you get my drift..

The Dean Bailey mantra is so much better.

Strange post seeing that I have been extremely critical of Melbourne's tanking and their game plan.

They are both wrong.

Strange opinions in this thread. Who are we to criticise the list management of a team that has been on top of the mountain for seven years - And one who should have won the flag in 2013.

IMO Geelong played the best footy in 2013. Don't forget they lead the Preliminary Final by 20 points at three quarter time.

Fair enough, I disagree. Thought they had the most holes come finals, Vardy, Hunt, Varcoe, Pods, Rivers all were out of touch. Also Freo match up brilliantly and probably would have tipped them come the big game. Funny thing is, had they brought in GHS, Smedts, Kersten, and Schroder earlier in the year they probably would have been primed come finals time.

There's a feather in your cap, they were behind when it counted.

The team who should have won the 2013 premiership was the team that won.

Hawks finished top, beat Geelong in the prelim and won the flag. Hawks deserved it.

I guess internally that Geelong will feel they should have won the premiership in 2013. You don't always get what you deserve in footy. I am still shaking my head how Richmond ( 15 wins ) lost to carlton ( 11 wins ) in the first week of the finals after leading by 5 goals. It was a staggering result.

And in this same thread, geelong is being criticised for releasing Chapman, when its obvious they have too many 30+ players on their list.

Notice how they're not being criticised for Hunt or Podsiadly? What does that tell you?

Yeah I don't think anyone is upset about Pods or Hunt.. different kettle of fish.

Also it isn't just 100% 'on the field' that causes me to question this decision.. I guess it is the tipping point where you realise that footy has changed forever and the romantic notions of club legends, one club players and team icons belong in the same place as Saturday Arvo footy and oranges at half time..

My main point is probably coming from the fact that Chapman, a loyal servant and champion, wanted to stay at the club he has devoted his whole career too.. and they told him to sit in the corner or piss off.. rough call imho. End of Story.

Anyone know when first open training is happening?

You'd be hard pressed to find a Cats supporter who isn't happy about Hunt getting booted to be honest haha

Yep, Geelong would be licking their wounds knowing what could have been, 1996 feel about it.
Anyway I honestly think all this is a real kick in the guts for Chapman and this may really kick him into action in 2014, He might just give 2014 that extra bit of effort and have a outstanding year. I think top 4 in our B&F would not be out of the question.

I've said it before, but the reason i just cannot fathom their decision on Chappy is that they were in a complete win win situation. He was such a big chance not to play half the season which would have given them exactly what they wanted, or the other scenario was that he came 100% good and kept winning them games all year! I guess the third scenario was that he lost form, got dropped and retired, which also would have suited them down to the ground. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking? (That is a rhetorical question by the way, so unless any of you have something new to say...) :)

Chapman only has a year or two left... So signing Chapman shows that even with Hird being out for a year, ESSENDON wont let 2014 be a gap year, we are aiming high!

SEE THE BOMBERS FLY UP!

Turns 32 today apparently, does our Chappy.

Happy birthday big fella.
