Traded #3: Scott Gumbleton - Traded to Fremantle for pick 55

You guys should have heard the Essendon "supporter" sitting behind absolutely abusing Gumbleton every time he went near it. And that was to half time.

I sat near a complete knob end at a game a couple of years ago against North, who absolutely gave it to Monfries all day. Several Essendon fans told him to shut it, he'd just bite back with the usual "f*** off" and carry on with his abuse. In the end a North supporter joined in and told him to shut up and lose some weight and try getting on the field and getting a kick in AFL himself, at which point this guy lost it completely and started ranting on about how Monfries would fit right in at a crap club like North. One of the Essendon fans then got security and got the guy evicted. The Essendon fans then high-fived the North guy. It was actually all quite funny.

Anyway, supporters who abuse their own players like that at games sicken me.

Some really good signs from Gumby. should have ad 5 goals and in a team that was thrashed in the mid that's a bloody good effort.

From a pure football lover, it was good to see the guy finally string a few games together. 4 goals on the night is a fair effort considering the team got smashed.
Hopefully the guy has an injury free career.

I found his game frustrating with highs and lows. Gumby had butter fingers when marking on the lead which is usually his strength - And we missed him being the hit up target - But he he took 2 strong contested marks - Standing man-to-man which is not his strong suit.

I might be wrong about this but I thought one of the reason Gumby was rated so highly as a kid was because of his contested marking, wasn’t he suppose to be best 2-3 contested mark of that draft?

I think the key thing in all of this is to just keep it all in context. No one should be suggesting that he broke the game apart or that he was brilliant last night. This is step 8 in the process of the on-field return for the guy and he continues to perform as well as we could expect (this is the main thing). Afterall, he came into the side as a necessity even though is form did probably not warrant it.

What is beyond doubt is that he is every bit the player that most of us had lost faith that he was. His return on the scoreboard alone is enough but what I think was particularly good about last night (moreso than in previous weeks) is that he presented as a true CHF target all night. While he didn't get the ball much he was the target of our kicks to half forward and he seemed to hold up very well under the pressure and always made a strong contest. On the back of hardly any pre-existing long term conditioning this speaks of an enormous natural work rate.

Gumby's disposal is rock solid too (particularly the goal kicking).

What everyone should be seeing now is that we still have a special player on our hands. He is doing enough to continue to play in the side for the rest of the season. TRB had better get to work on devising a way of getting all of Hurley, Ryder, Gumby, Hooker, Crameri, Pears/Fletcher, Carlisle and TBell/Hille into the one side.

This little highlights package basically sums it all up: http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/a/Video:-Gumbleton-stands-tall/9699

Any thoughts on the rumours Freo will make a big play for Gumby if they don't land Cloke.

Maybe a possible 3 way trade with GC for Caddy?

Maybe if they chuck in Fyfe as well, but hell no.

SSENDON forward Scott Gumbleton has emerged as a bargain-priced Plan B for clubs in the market for Travis Cloke.

The Sunday Herald Sun believes Fremantle, which is out of the running to lure Cloke with a five-year deal, could be one of several clubs eyeing Gumbleton.

Clubs were already hot for Gumbleton before he kicked four goals for the Bombers against Hawthorn on Friday night and he will be an intriguing story post-season.

Anyway, Bellchambers being traded or Hurley moving back or Lovett-Murray learning to fly or Long playing a game all strike me as more likely things to happen than Gumby leaving the club

Goal highlights:

Only had nine possessions but those four goals looked impressive. Good contested marks and mobility. I’m dying to see how good he is once he builds more confidence. I will cry if we trade him and he turns out to be a gun.

Don't rule him out returning to Fremantle - The family are red-hot Freo supporters and his Mum even has Freo number plates on her car.
i've ruled it out, it wont happen despite number plates and who mum and Dad support.

on a game note, the mark he failed to take amongst 3 Hawks was impressive, sounds stupid but he read it so much better, and nearly pulled it off.

I think Gumbleton has done everything we could have wanted him to have achieved by nthis stage of his comeback and more. Once he fully gets his confidence back we will see him taking those out front marks that he missed leading up the wing. The important thing to note here is that he was making the leads and getting space.

There aren't too many individuals that can spend the amount of time he has on the injury list and stick by their commitment to play football. AFL history is littered with highly rated young players that had too much bad luck. Essendon putting so much time and money into him is not just indicative of the potential talent they see but also the commitment the player has to repay the faith.

He will be here next year and for a few more to come.

I think the HS and the rest of us have very different definitions of "bargain priced".

Given we were knocking back picks in the vicinity of Freo's first rounder before that back surgery...

Same I'll happily rule it out.
I highly doubt he could leave the club after everything we have given him and the fact we have persisted with him for so long. And I'm pretty sure he lives with Jobe.
