The following consequences are more or less givens:

1. Watson loses his Brownlow and Mitchell and Cotchin share one - this to be done quietly since it is an embarrassment but the record book must show a winner.
2. Essendon will be sued by the players and it will be an open door for the players to argue there was gross negligence by Essendon in failing to implement any proper processes to ensure precisely what the players were being injected with and to have reliable records. Each player's claim will be different. All will claim a loss of earnings. There will be interesting argument as to whether "loss of enjoyment" arising from a football contract sounds in damages and whether worry about future health consequences can be included. There will be no claims for damages for personal injury as there are not likely to be any "serious injury" as defined in workers comp legislation.
3. Essendon will be relieved of having to pay 95 per c of salary cap on the sensible ground that they will have to pay damages to the suspended players who cannot earn a football salary until November.

What is unknown is:
1. Whether Essendon might in turn sue Danks or Hird?
2. Whether there is any appeal against the Cas decision. In this regard there is a precedent in a German court that CAS decision was was set aside as biased against a German ice skater on the grounds that effectively 2 of the 3 arbitrators were WADA appointees. I doubt such an appeal would succeed but it has to have more chance than the ridiculous Federal Court referral and the even sillier appeal from Middleton's decision. And will Hird try to get involved again or has his appetite for paying legal fees been sated?

In any event there is much material for the continuing consumption of popcorn.

A statement on Alex Browne.

Northern Blues General Manager Garry O’Sullivan has released a statement on Alex Browne, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport delivered their ruling on the 34 past and present Essendon players.

Browne, who signed for the Blues late last year, was implicated in the ruling which will see the players banned from action until November 2016.

“Obviously Alex will be very disappointed and upset, given he desperately wanted to start afresh with our football club and is now absolutely one of our own,” O’Sullivan said.

My personal favourites from the EFC board (names deleted):

4 games missed since 1973, so it's my job to go. I have to, but if I ever cross paths with hird........Never, ever warmed to the bloke, never wanted him as coach, such an arrogant decision

I think many Essendon supporters will be distant with the football club for at least this year (or maybe even permanently). I don't begrudge them for that either. It'll take a very long time, if ever, for the club to recover from this.

AFL will make things up on the fly and ensure Essendon don't receive the #1 pick for 2017.

It's what they do.

Does the AFL need to enforce this decision?

The thing is, we have been punished. The governance plus having our best players out for a year. If we finish last as a result, well by afl rules we are entitled to first pick. The AFL need to stop tampering with their rules.

Unless I am missing something I don't understand how the urine samples can be considered "evidence" when other teams had the same or similar results.

Anyways I've been sick of AFL football for a long time, this is just further putting me towards NBA/NFL/Hockey. I'll support the boys when I can but I can safely say the love of the game has completely gone from me and drained over the last three years.

Who's captain this year now?

I'm good with taking a break from afl .... You guys made the past few seasons easier but yeah I'm out

The most corrupt organisation in the world, whose representatives are picked by the same people that pick the makeup of the CAS, wins.

What a surprise.

Big government screwing over the little man again. If this doesn't turn you into a small government supporter I don't know what will.

Seriously guys, WE STUFFED UP.

What went on in unacceptable.

This sucks for the players, I feel for them but the only one to blame is the Essendon Football Club.

This is pretty ******* damning

Meanwhile Doc Reid will probably show up to training like nothing has happened. How can he face the group? How he is still at their club beggars belief. Would you trust anything he told you?
According to the CAS decision writeup, the players and coaches deliberately kept details away from Reid, he had very limited knowledge of what was going on.

I have mixed emotions about this..on one hand I'm over the moon that these drug cheats are getting the punishment they deserve. And I'm rapt that for season 2016, the media will actually talk about FOOTBALL instead of this stupid saga.

On the other hand, part of me feels sorry for their fans..most of the ones I've met are pricks but knowing they won't even go watch their team is something that's pretty sad. It's also a pretty bad day for AFL overall, but it's something that had to happen.

I'd love to know how ASADA didn't find them guilty (possibly a healthy 'donation' from the AFL) and WADA did..but either way, I'm glad the saga is finally over.

For some reason I just think Reid is not responsible here , just seems like the bloke has been lied to and kept in the dark.
