We have an experienced back 7 in place now, but we have quietly assembled our future back 7 which should hold us in good shape for the next 10 years
  • C Comben
  • W Dawson
  • M Whitlock
  • J Archer
  • R Hardeman
  • J Goater
  • M Bergman

All young and 1st and 2nd round draft picks with the exception of Jacko. Important reminder of how well we are set up for the future.

Matty would have loved the 28 degree minimum temp here in Shepp on Sunday night.
He would have been down doing run throughs at Deakin Reserve first thing, into the gym at Aquamoves, then off to work at Nippers Intersport in the Mall after that.
Great local boys the Whitlocks..

That’s all for the Shepp locals….

And WHO are you?

The whispers on Wyndham Street i have heard is that we will have a Weitering type backman coming within the shape of Whitlock by 2028
Shit I hope not Gaso..

Think of all the retrospective posts claiming the worst draft decision since the beginning of time going to waste..

The good thing as well is that first three are capable forwards too which will eventaually cause headaches, whether it's team selection or match day.

We could probably use an elite speed medium defender to put on the Watson types (Goater? Hardemann?) and a quality interceptor and distributor off the half back long term, but some pieces are coming into place.
If some of these guys above can solve those issues then that's great, but otherwise we can be a bit more targeted in what we trade or draft for now with most of our needs kinda solved, except perhaps one more young key position behind MW.

Yeah the problem is we don’t really know what the likes of Goater and Hardeman are in those departments. Even Bergman or Archer. Takes a while in senior footy to become that and for the freaks that have the dash or intercept (at a high rate) early, they normally move up the ground.

Yep they haven't played much AFL footy between them. Arch looks a lock but he'll struggle on the quicker types, not for lack of trying. That's why Goater with his speed might be so helpful back there.

Agreed. Comben, W Dawson & M Whitlock can play top notch footy at either end. Good luck matching up on those 3. Don't worry about causing headaches to the opposing coaches - more like thumping migraines.

100%. They are also all big units who are aggressive and competitors.

As Chubbs said we probably need a lighting quick elite defender to compliment this unit moving forward but really these guys should be starting to stake a claim to their specific role over the next 12-24 months, much like Jacko and Comben did last year.

My hunch is Hardeman, Goater and Bergs make some strides in 2024 assuming they stay fit.

At some point if one of the current forward pockets aren't working it'd be good to trial them down back. Konstanty has all the traits of a really good lockdown small back. Maybe Payne or Stevens might at some stage be worth playing there.

We’ll see who else has tears end of 2025
I think we'll make the same trade again with our 2026 R1 for a 2025 R1 with something coming back to bank points for Harris and McCartney in 2026 (sounds like a Presidential ticket).
Then that gives us the option to push one of our 2025 R2 picks into into 2026 to help match points on them too.

I think you lot are sucked in to the hype..ive been there, ive been eucked into the preseason hype.. I aint falling for it ever again

Talking about applying the same trade strategy next year has nothing to do with the preseason hype this year.
Even if we have a few early wins to start with I won't be getting ahead of myself because we've done that before (Clarko's first year) and still won three games.

I don't think holding our 2026 R1 and scrambling to trade it in 2026 (if we have to match bids on F/son's) for points and/or a future pick in the 2027 Tassie draft makes much sense, unless we intend to trade it on a player.
We may not care about next years draft and getting into the 1st round, we'll see what happens.
