Not the sort of pick that engenders much confidence. I think he'll last as long as McDonagh.
I suspect he has a bit more of a footy brain than McDonagh. Personally I know little about him but I do know he has played some SANFL and is not someone who came out of suburban footy pre covid and only had 9 VFL games experience. In the end McDonagh just didn't have the ability to pick up the step up in speed needed to take the next step. From the highlights reel he looks nothing like McDonagh and the way he played. :)

If you are getting a big bodied mid at this stage they are one of two things slow as trecal or can't hit the side of a boat. Do your self a favour watch a few of this blokes videos absolute elite set of hands, ready to go round 1 and can lauch it 60 whats not to like.
Mid? This bloke is a defender

Given his intercept marking is his 1 wood, is he sort of like insurance if Ridley goes down maybe?

You pick up a mature ager as insurance or a reason, wonder what this selection means for that back 6 regarding positional changes if any.

Redman, Ridley further up the ground perhaps?

Taking Frances spot in the vfl ?
Looks like he hangs onto marks and actually leaves the ground in a marking contest unlike Francis.

Agreed. Strong Howe vibes.

McDonagh's weapon was his left foot but iin the AFL you don't get the footy if you can't get across the ground.

I get that highlights videos only feature highlights .. but you can't fake AFL level agility and elevation. Montgomerie at least has the raw tools, along with sticky hands. Exactly the type you should grab that late in the piece.

This guy plays a lot like Darcy Moore … would be great if he turned out like that type of player … certainly reads the ball extremely well and has sure hands

I don't mind a backup 3rd tall/medium defender type. The way I see it (and it'll be interesting to see if the coaches go this way) is we should be playing 2 genuine KP + Laverde and Ridley and then 3 smaller blokes (your McGrath, Hind, Redman, D'Ambrosio etc). So to me he's backup for Laverde/Ridley - which I'm not sure we currently have. Also if Laverde/Ridley get forced to play tall some games which is inevitable that also leaves an opening for him if he's good enough.

I Grew up with Rhett, wasn't much of a footballer growing up, always had talent but was very raw. Growing up on Kangaroo Island probably played a big part in that as the footy isn't at a very high standard. Wasn't until he moved up to town where he got recognised by centrals and grew into his frame abit more that he started to get recognised. He is a massive Essendon supporter aswell, not sure if that played any part in the pickup? I think he will be a very good player for you guys, he is a very driven bloke and fact that he's got a chance now I think he will take it and repay the faith.
