Player Watch #39: Finnbar 'Moose' Maley

He went from a few games in the vfl back to the ammo’s. We drafted him and he came second in the vfl best and fairest as a 20 year old.

He’s a basketball convert. His sister played for the opals and most recently the 3 member street ball Aussie team at the last Olympics.

He played Good Friday in the vfl and took about 6 contested marks for the day including a few hangers. But said to someone here on Bigfooty at a fan thing that he didn’t feel ready to debut.

This is hard for me to understand because I don’t think I’ve seen him play a poor game at vfl. Or in scratch matches. It helps he can go into the ruck if he’s being held up forward. Relatively speaking he racks up the footy in the ruck.

Obviously needs to improve hame
Sense and decision making but that hasn’t stood out to me. But at afl level i can believe it would be a problem

His kicking in the second half after moving to the backline was much better.

Yeah I didn’t see him turn it over.
Just a safe 20-30 metre kick sideways to one of our better ball users.
He ain’t going to be splitting opposition zones with 50m kicks.
Just clunk it & give it off… that’s his job.

Whilst we have had one player on our list that resembles the first, we've had plenty that resembles the latter.

I reckon there really is a link between basketball and accumulation lol. Skillset seems to cross over fairly well. Not sure how you'd study it though

Except knowing our luck, we’d keep the wrong one. We’d trade the good half mash up to Richmond for a fourth rounder & end up with the shit half mash up sitting at full forward…

With contested marking like those clip highlights I really hope we give him a crack as a deeper forward sooner rather than later.

Far greater upside than Teakle or CCJ.

I believe that Maley and Teakle have gone past CCJ. Not confident he'll be on our lit for next season.
