Checked out the new 3D Samsung at Harvey Norman the other day, and was completely blown away by the quality.
Does anybody own one?

Surely this will takeover from regular HDTV, especially in sports broadcasting.

I know the NRL State Of Origin is set to become the first FTA 3D broadcast in the world, but not sure if the Soccer World Cup will be broadcast on FTA in 3D.

If I remember correctly, I read that the soccer world cup will be in 3D somewhere

I'm waiting to see the Samsung 46" 8000 series which I don't think is out just yet.

The NRL State of Origin will be in 3D.

How many shows support 3D?
Or do they do it at all and it goes 3D automatically

NRL SOO and soccer World Cup and probably the newer 3D movies. (Avatar, Cloudy, Dragon, Toy Story etc), apart from that nothing.

the production requires 3D cameras and production equipment. You need 3D TVs or projectors to watch it

and in Australia's case, government permission because it requires significantly more bandwidth.

I suspect 9 have got some equipment on its way to the WC to go via Sydney.

I can't personally see it taking off.

Not enough have moved up from DVD and non Full HD Sets into Blu Ray and Full HD as it is.

I also think its a novelty, i.e watch a 3D movie / Show / Game, once a week as a "weekly main event". I can't imagine watching every day tv like this. So to me its a specialised market, I'd rather go a high quality Projector and screen.

Then again, I might hop on if it becomes mainstream enough, but thats years away.

Definetely not spending the money as a guinea pig, it falls over and I'm left with a dud TV.

Others can throw their money in and be that person.

Surely most TVs being released now would be superseded before there is regular 3D content?

As posters have mentioned, bit gimmicky and not really worth upgrading if you already have a decent TV.

Surely if you have a relatively old Tv and you're looking to upgrade, a 3D Tv is the way to go? I'm assuming that the quality of HDTV on the 3D would be the same as a normal HDTV, if they're bringing out more and more events in 3D, it's win/win if you have one.

Yeah sure, I see where you are coming from.

But for the most, people don't have that luxury to just go and plonk $4K - $5K on a TV upgrade plus a PS3. On top of that add the 3D Glasses Costs. For the time being, the glasses are being thrown in for free.

Again, for most family's that struggle (houses increasing / interest rates increasing / grocery costs are obscene) , an upgrade from a CRT would be a $1,200 - $1,500 LCD / Plasma. For them, this would be the "movies".

3D in a tv adds to the cost of the set. 3D also relies on a big set, cause the 3D effect reduces the size of the screen, can't explain it any better than that. I can't see 3D being viable on the 36" or so TV's. 3D also required the set to be be brighter than normal, because when watching 3D, you lose the brightness.

I'm not against the technology but it needs a lot of time to see if it works.

Remember the 1st Plasma's that came out? $8K for a 42" which had worse picture quality than a CRT of the time. But yes, it looked cool hung up on the wall.

I'm about to plonk $14K on a 2D Projector & Screen. I know the 2D market is rock-solid and Projectors have been round for ages. I could hold off on my purchase for an LED Projector (just coming to market & very expensive but increases bulb v LED light from 3,000 hours to 60,000+) or wait for a 3D Projector.

The LED (in Projectors) and 3D market are very new, how do I not know that in 1 years time, a VHS or BETA version of 3D comes out, that trumps the current version, and becomes accepted as the standard. And all of a sudden, the set I just plonked $5K on, no longer cuts it. The same could be said of Blu-Ray 3D. Will this be the standard going forward? HD looked like it was gong to be the standard then got trumped. I wouldn't have like to have invested in a HD Player + Movie Titles.

possibly a gimmick, but sport will drive this along with movies.

watching sport in 3D will be astonishing. they are thinking of showing big sport events in cinemas.

Maybe, I don't think I could wear the 3D glasses all the time. You get a headache after a while.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what sport looks like in 3D. The idea fascinates me.

Won't be for some time, not getting a 3D TV anytime soon.

The IPL final was shown in 3D in cinimas around India.
So far in Australia apparently 5,000 3D tv's have been sold, and to watch the soccer on 3D tonight you have to have one AND have foxtel iq2.

So, will there be more than a few hundred watching tonight?

Doubt there would be that many, apparantly it costs $100 for an extra pair of those 3D glasses, so you can't really have your mates around to watch the soccer or anything anyway.

Gimmick, once the avatar fad has died down so will interest in these.
A rather simplistic argument. I agree that the drive for 3D has been phenomenally quick and arguably unjustified, but surely it's just another evolutionary step for multimedia. I wouldn't mind replacing my CRT, even though it's a 40" Loewe CRT (very heavy mofo), and when I look around, everything is 3D. I don't think I have much of a choice whether I want it or not.

I agree the idea of wearing active shutter glasses does not greatly appeal. In its current format, 3D is a passing fad; we cannot be expected to wear stupid glasses all the time when watching TV, our computer, and a myriad of other devices. Having watched Avatar in 3D IMAX and in a normal 2D cinema, I must admit I didn't think the 3D was a big deal. The big screen sure, the 3D not so much.

I think TV should become truly 3D, but not on a 2D panel where you need to wear glasses. Why can't you set up an area of your living room with multiple projectors that display a film in real 3D? That's where I would like the technology to go, films not shown on a flat screen but on a three dimensional stage.

I have heard they are making it so newer models coming out later this year wont even need the glasses. I'd wait for these to come out before I even consider getting one.

At least 3D tv's should bring down the price of LCD's, similar to what LCD did to Plasma's.

Would be throwing away money to buy one untill they come out without the glasses.

Hell, even the brands dont work with different televisions, and the glasses range from the cheapest brands at 70 dollars. Imagine bringing over a bunch of mates for the footy? would cost you a grand just to do so...

Absolute gimmick of an idea, will fade away IMO
