Saw on twitter that he was asked whether he wanted the full VFL game or to be the AFL sub and get the experience, even knowing he may not play, and he chose sub.

Cannot verify whether that is true, but if so, good on him and going through the process will probably be of some benefit to him but there's a bit of tail wagging the dog stuff there.
Under any other circumstance it shouldn't be up to the player, but given it officially counts as his debut I'm glad they asked him (if true). Takes the sting out of some of the criticism levelled at it too, as it means they did take it into consideration.

It comes from what Rutten said last night and Bucks echoed something similar on Sen yesterday morning.

If given a choice the players will choose to sub, even knowing they may not play.
For Tex it may be even more beneficial, he has barely played, he gets the following-
  • no week long build up playing the game in his head.
  • eased in a little, that last name is a hard one to carry
  • if he does get on it may be shorter game length protects him against a full 4 quarters
  • gets to prepare, sit on the bench, see it all happen, see the standard and a really take it in.

I don't like a debut as sub, I hate it personally from a first game, all that type of thing.
But there are positives to it, the preparation and almost having a dry run at your first game is pretty good.

That being said I get the impression for what Truck said only a little while ago (no debut subs) and the way he answered the question on 360 and that Tex was asked his opinion. I don't think Truck was the one pounding the desk for it to happen, there was a debate about it and the kid was given a choice.

We now have the media outrage cycle and debate about it but at the end of the day if the kid asked for it, it's fine by me.

Super excited for him. The class and poise he showed in the preseason really has me pumped to see him make his debut.
Sure he's probably still quite raw and maybe he'd be a mid season debut in a team with stronger small forwards but that's all good - its still an opportunity for a young man to come in and make an impact.

Leave him in, not saying he'll be as good as his old man but he has that same aura.

Just give him a handful of games and see he how goes.
Was effective with Archie and Nik, let's do the same with Tex.
