400,000 aggregate crowds for round 1?

Richmond and Carlton have been at the bottom of the ladder in recent years. Normally they should get 70,000 to a game

Bulldust. The facts don't say that at all. Over the 21 seasons 1986 to 2006 the sides have met at the MCG 20 times. 3 times they have drawn 70,000+ including the 2001 SF and 3 times they have drawn 60,000 to 69,999. The more regular crowd is between 45,000 and 55,000.

and how many times have we made the finals since 1982? Just wait until we have more than 5 minutes of success for once and we'll be averaging 50,000 a game like we did. We're the sleeping giant.

Richmond and Carlton have been at the bottom of the ladder in recent years. Normally they should get 70,000 to a game

The last time that happened was in 2001 - once through a semi final, the other because it was SOS's 300th game or a significant other achievement.

Other then that, its very rare for Rich-Car to draw 70,000+

The MCC is predicting 56,000+ for the game but have been down a few thousand on the actual attendances at the games, I'm tipping 52-53,000 - probably 65-70,000 had it been opening night.

Just on the magic 400,000, the AFL will never crack the magic milestone until they play 8 high drawing games in high drawing timeslots with teams in reasonable form, for example;

Easter Weekend 2008 (Round 1?)

Thursday Night

Collingwood vs Carlton MCG

Good Friday Night

Essendon vs. Richmond MCG

Saturday

Geelong vs. Western Bulldogs Docklands

Saturday Night

Fremantle vs. Kangaroos Subiaco
Sydney vs West Coast Homebush

Easter Sunday

Adelaide vs Port AAMI

Easter Sunday Night

St.Kilda vs. Brisbane Docklands

Easter Monday

Hawthorn vs Melbourne MCG

Potentially that's a 400,000+ (given good weather) round in the making, until the AFL pull their finger out and play football on good friday this will never happen.

How is making the finals only a couple of times since 1982 relevant? You made the statement "Normally they should get 70,000 to a game." Three out of 20 is not normal. The only thing that has been normal over the period 1986 to 2006 is that you normally don't make the finals. I have no doubt you have a huge supporter base but you were the one that made the "normal" statement and the facts don't back up that statement. Ifs, maybes, and just you wait, aren't facts.

it would either be good friday or easter thursday, although both could be possible.

Is there any reason why days like QB, Anzac, Easter Monday can't have either 2 matches or matches interstate.

Why couldn't easter monday be:
Hawthorn vs Melbourne MCG and Fremantle vs Kangaroos SUBIACO

I can't see why not, didn't Fremantle used to host a game on ANZAC day?

Didnt anyone tell you about the other 10 NRL clubs and Super 14 teams in Sydney. FWIW, Warratahs got 25K and an NRL game got about 15K at the same time the swans were on.

Sounds like you are making excuses for your former-glory status. Move aside oldtimer.

Yep and how about a pathetic 12,000 for the Storm in Melbourne a city of 3.8 million?

How can a team with 42000 members only get 37000 to their game?!  Did 5000 of their new members forget where where Subi was? Did they boycott heading over the river into enemy territory? Did they get lost inside Matthew Pavlichs nostrils?

With a team that is re-building Brisbane crowd was pretty creditable I think. The premiership winning Broncos only drew 24000 the night before. There you go, a battling footy team STILL outdrew the Premiership winning NRL team! :thumbsu:

JF

Only 39,000 of those 42,000 are actual seated members you ignorant clown.

So what happened to the other 3000 "seated" members? Decided not to turn up because of a gut feeling of impending doom? :)

What you say is true but what Madtiger meant clearly though he chose the wrong words is that given a bit of success for both sides 70,000 is well possible and it is of course. The fact is that NO rivalry averages 70,000 over the past 10 or 12 years. Carlton V Essendon is marginally over 61,000, Richmond V Collingwood is marginally below 61,000, The Non ANZAC Essendon V Collingwood is 62,000, a substantial fall off from the holiday pumped ANZAC Day crowds, etc. etc.

The Big 4 blockbusters depend like everything on form and expectation. With a bit of both carlton V Richmond has, does and will draw huge.
