Guys like this are why I'm less worried about our list than what's being made out in the media. I highly doubt he's noticed by many outside of Richmond in the footy world, yet he's steadily improving and are ready to take a big step when we have a team that actually plays like a team.

Nice to see someone actually rack up some stats too. A lot of young guys have had good games but end up with sub 20 touches still. We need some players that rack them up and start averaging 25+ a game

Banks last 5 games his average player rating is 11.4. Among wingmen, this rating sustained over a whole season would put Banks 4th in the AFL in 2024 behind Gulden, McLuggage and Callaghan. It will be interesting to see if Banks can sustain that level of performance.

He looked great late last year too. Started slow this year but has come home well. Will be good when they all play well together more often

Knows how to find the footy which means he must have a great tank.
Can see him being our Treloar type. Accumulator that can consistently find the footy 30+ every week.

Is he the sort of player we would be comfortable giving the no4. Just a thought.

When we got him Banks was the guy that got me excited more than any other than Gibcus. Captain in all of his teams, superb skills, great attitude. So happy to see him bringing it home.

Only fly in the ointment is that he might be flying when Tassie enter and want a captain and young guy to build around. Although if he is racking up the possessions and with high efficiency we should get a top 5 pic for him if he goes. Knowing the AFL they will have some rule that allows Tasmanians to leave from Richmond with round 4 compo.

He's the guy that I thought probably looked the weakest out of our 2021 draft haul and even as early as early this season I thought he was still well off the pace, seemed to fumble and worry too much about body contact, but boy hasnt he turned it around since he hit that purple patch in the VFL. Hasnt looked back and is developing at a rapid rate. Good on him. Gibcus(if his body holds up), Brown, Clarke and Banks all look like making it which is so important for us moving fwd. Sonsie looks like hes in trouble

...aaaaand of course caddy gets the nom
He’s been a media darling since before the draft
He was never going to finish the season without a nom

A players name always means more than what they actually produce

What’s ever better, 92% disposal eff.
He has to go at this high rate and be an elite runner to make up for his lack of physical contest ability

But great signs, started from that incredible vfl game he played couple months back

That sounds impressive ie player rating 11.4.. What exactly does it mean?

The short answer is I don't know for certain what it means CP.

What I do know is the ratings system was created by Champion Data. It is arbitrary. Points are awarded to players(or subtracted) for all recordable actions they undertake during a match, possession, disposal, effective disposal, scores, score involvements, tackles, pressure acts, clangers etc.

Banks has had a nice purple patch for the last 5 games. From what I can make out, his player rating has benefitted from the following in that time:

Player Rating around 11.4 average
Disposals 17.4 per match
Disposal efficiency around 79%
Metres gained around 370 metres
Inside 50's around 4
Contested possessions 5
Intercepts 3+
Score involvements around 4
Score launch 0.6
Tackles 1.6
Pressure acts 11+
Time on ground 79%

If we compare that average for just the last 5 matches with Josh Daicos's average for the whole 2023 season, when he was selected AA...

Player Rating around 11.2 average
Disposals 25
Disposal efficiency 71%
Metres gained 430
Inside 50 3.3
Contested possessions 7.6
Interecepts 3.2
Score involvements 5.1
Score launch 1.3
Tackles 2.3
Pressure Acts 13.0
Time on ground 87%

It is admittedly difficult from these stats to see how Banks has rated slightly higher over the last 5 weeks than J Daicos did in his AA 2023 season. The area Banks leads Daicos conclusively is disposal efficiency, so no doubt this plays a big part in it. Also Banks has more inside 50's and has done it from roughly 10% less time on ground. Apart from that, Daicos leads Banks in all other areas. There will be some hidden reason we can't see that explains Banks higher than expected rating.

Interesting aside here. Daicos did something in 2023 wingers normally find extremely difficult to achieve - he got selected in the AA team, as did Errol Gulden. The interesting part is that amongst wingers in 2023, this is where they rated:

1. Gulden 15.51(this should make any winger an AA lock)
2. Nic Martin 12.37
3. Mason Wood 12.23
= 4. Hugh McLuggage 11.2
= 4. J Daicos 11.2
6. K Amon 10.95
7. J Ross 10.91

It is funny how the AA selectors who are renowned for overlooking specialist wingers have somehow plucked out the equal 4th highest rated winger in the season and bestowed him with the rare honour of being AA wingman. I don't think this has occurred too often to players whose surname was not Daicos. You have to go back to 2018 when the last specialist wingers were selected in the AA team, Gaff and Sidebottom. Gaff's player rating was a career high 12.2. Sidebottom's was 13.74.

2017 Josh Kelly was selected with a rating of 14.45.

Daicos is the lowest rated winger to be selected in the AA team in the last 8 years.

I almost wrote him off, how did he go from not being able to find the ball at all earlier to producing his last few weeks? Nice to see him starting to live up to his junior talent.

He’s played 18 games

If the club was to write off players who weren’t winning a ton of ball in their first 15 games we’d be in Trouble
