People are rough on the Big Drip. He looks a player to me, just forced to play 1v1 against the best BIG forwards as proved a little to much, which is to be expected. The ball has also been delivered into our back line quicker than normal, with our injuries.

Rance is his 3rd year, we weren't even sure he was going to play as a back, he was tried up forward because he was making so many mistakes.

Garth has been our entire tall back structure, when we are losing contested ball and allowing the opposition to bring the ball in to their tall forwards. It's no surprise he gets beaten. It's amazing that he does as well as he has. He needs another 3-4 kg. But otherwise I like what he is doing. IMHO against Adelaide Dave Astbury would have meant a win.

He looks to me like a genuine quality AFL KPB that needs about 2 more years development to reach that top end standard. Awesome development by the club and Ryan himself. :thumbsu::rainbow:

Do have a bit of a giggle with me son when he kicks those egg beaters (doubled handed drop). They seem to come off mostly though. Wouldn't have seen much action imo if RanceBury were on the park this year. So as said in other previous posts the experience is doing him good and don't have major expectations. Would get interested if he's swung forward though, given his credentials in the lower leagues.

Playing in a team with injuries or not the kid has looked totally out of his depth and he continues to look undersized. To date he is a third tall at best and only a negating one at that.

Can anyone who rates him highly tell me what outstanding attributes stand out that make them think he will become an outstanding kpd.
I know its only early days and he may well come on in leaps and bounds but atm i cant see where the big jump will come from.He just isnt ticking enough boxes atm.

Doesn't have to be a outstanding KP player first of all.He is the least of our worries. You said he is a third tall right even second, but has been playing on the monster forwards due to injuries with little or no support from others all this expected from a kid who missed preseason and on 12 games or so.Put anyone there with our lack of pressure in our forward line and midfield and fine delivery they will struggle.

Some of the BF posts on how much he’d grown over the preseason were greatly exaggerated
Yeah i copped plenty on here because i stated imo he would only be a third tall type that he was only marginally bigger than Grimes.
But its not the size or height that has me concerned you can have one without the other and still play kp. i cant find any outstanding attributes to suggest he will become a real good player.

If its about height and size he needs a massive increase in his strength he probably needs to get to 100kg to compete physically with the big fwds and if he doesnt gain that size strength he needs other factors that i just dont see things like speed leap agility etc.

Hes young and a lot of times players grow a leg and become something you dont expect hes only been a round a few yrs and does have time to prove people like me wrong all im saying is i just cant see it with him atm.

I understand what your saying but he has looked totally out of his depth or to say it harshly not up to it. He doesnt need to be an outstanding kp but atm he doesnt even look like an ordinary one.If hes not going to be a very good kpd then we are in trouble he is atm the only tall defensive youngun we have being groomed in defense.
That may change but for me i would need to see some dramatic improvement in some key areas.

Don't mind Garth and hope he becomes a good player. One thing I reckon he lacks is the closing pace. Often someone like Rance/Grimes will be able to disrupt the contest juuuuust as the ball arrives despite being caught a couple of metres behind. Garth doesn't seem to possess that quality. Hopefully he can find it some how.

He's no thoroughbread, definitely a draft horse. I think hes capable of playing KPD down the track, a few more kegs, bit more time in the gym and he'll hold his own.

Maybe Garthy is still hampered by his foot injury...

Hampered as in not in ideal condition then yes, it virtually cost him a full preseason of running - which speaks volume of his natural aerobic capacity that he's still covering extraordinary ground for a key defender.

Bit more speed, bit more weight and he'll be a good one

Problem he might run into is that he's currently too light and too slow. That's not an easy combination to rectify as improving one usually diminishes the other.

Seriously!

Garth has done a sterling job in an undermanned backline whilst still in his development phase. He's no Rance. But then neither are just about all the other KPBs.

Yes, he'll have problems against the monster KPFs. We do need a monster 196cm+ KPB to replace Astbury. But overall I am very happy with Garth. He's proven he can play AFL and take a load. He'll get stronger and smarter.

A long term solid B grade KPB. Looks like great drafting and good development to me.

Yeah I'm with ya. The kid has been the sole key back at times this year before his 10th game in a team that's getting smashed in the midfield and allowing easy entries. He'll be fine.

Also, wayyyy too much emphasis has been put on height these days. Scott Thompson, Joel Hamling, Rance, Hurley etc etc would all be around the same height and they go okay.

Oh yeah he’ll never be fleet of foot but with the right power training focus I can see him improving his speed marginally like astbury has. Astbury used to be slow as treacle, whilst not quick now, hes not super slow either.

massive problem if big dave or grimey miss games again against top 4 teams, im still having a bit of a chuckle about a poster who claimed about 4/5 years ago with elton >>>>>astbury then a few months back same bloke went garth >>>>>astbury. :p

Garth will never be a key back who plays on monster forwards like has been playing at best second or third tall key back.We need to still fill that role. Kid needs time thrown to the wolves to early.

i agree, i got a sick feeling WA clubs are gunna hunt baker, bolton, macca and broad with tasty offers. so garth perfect for backup/development in 19/20 and 2021 for him to star and shine.
