Well if he does get another year then he will be on his last chance to become a AFL player

If ever a kid need to get a personal trainer in the off season and work his ass off its Sydney Stack
A personal trainer? WTF? The guy is at an elite AFL football club.

Pretty common practice for players especially who want to go to the next level
Dusty did it pre 2016 with boxing

Only the most serious defenders of Hardwick - who think he does NO wrong - swallowed that nonsense about him supposedly going to be picked that week.
Dimma didn't say it at all - it was an interpretation and guess of something he said.
He and the match committee were never going to pick him after leaving him out every other week bar one.
Would have offered stacks more than Edwards in the final.

Some people were saying that late tackle by Edwards alone justified his selection & glossed over that he actually did nothing in the final. The tackle Edwards was already running at speed to the flat footed opponent. Steve Urkel could've brought down Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same scenario. In 30 years I doubt I'll delude myself that carrying Edwards to 300 was a good thing. Was cooked 90% of 2021. Would've rathered we got 7 games each into Stack, Clarke and Banks than what Edwards served up.

Lots of afl players do it in the off season
Probably to force them to keep a certain level of fitness. All modern players are expected to keep a level of fitness returning to pre season training. Sounds like Stacky lives on kebabs and VB for 8 weeks. I'd say this off season will be his last if he returns to the club in bad shape again.

Not during the off season he is not and thats where is his issues are

He need to get his fitness up and keep it up during the off season and not come back in his usual s**t condition
Think the benefits could also be just keeping him busy and in that professional headspace

Easy to make poor choices if you don’t have much going on day to day and not around the best influences or people who don’t need to worry about keeping fit or eating well

But if he keeps active and busy around other guys with similar goals they can keep each other honest

You see it very clearly.
All fact.
We love Edwards and all he did -especially his role in three flags, but was nowhere near it all season. Plenty of us called it early, that clear allegiances to certain players would cost us too four and our season and it stayed right to script.
With a 60-70-80 per cent fit or whatever they are calling it this week, Dusty, the sub needed to be fit, ready and productive. We chose allegiance over requirement and got burned!!

I was one that called it early too, and now it's too late, Edwards and george cost us a 2nd chance finals run not to mention our winning form.
Can't blame the players, they tried, I take the blame to the selection crew.

I was bitching and moaning half the season.

I agree that Shedda wasn't best 22 this season, but if you can't show some loyalty to the greats of your club at the end of their careers you can very quickly become Melb FC in the Trengove / Grimes co-captain era.

A flag this year would have been a bonus. You can't renew your whole list all at once. Gibcus, Sonsie, Jack Ross, etc will all be a lot better for their experience of Finals in 2022, even if we paid a heavy price for playing them. A 2nd final would have been even more valuable but so it goes

I never thought we'd be competing for a flag this year so I didn't mind getting Edwards to 300 games. First indig player at our club is an achievement I rate over AAs. Caddy, Edwards and Lambert retiring this year is great. Cotch, JR and a few others next year is good transition. Gibcus, MRJ, Cumbo, Miler and Ross got finals experience.
Now our huge problem was close losses, dunno it Sheds was responsible for them. I don't recall him giving away any 50s costing us goals in the few games I saw.
PS hope like hell that Stack gets resigned

Kebabs and VB for 8 weeks. He did not come back all fat and flabby just low in km's. In photos he posted he looked pretty good, certainly not a Motlop summer. This whole fitness thing is nonsense, he wasn't playing seniors because 9 months earlier he wasn't at the required level. How do you spend 9 months in an AFL club and not be fit. He was on the track 4 months earlier than last year, yet he played good football last year.

There must be more too it why he didn't get more than 1 game, and I don't think any of us know what that is.

I agree, but I think we are saying "unfit" instead of lazy and arrogant. Stack has more natural talent than 90% of the players on our list. We're assuming he has good character, and so therefore it must be fitness holding him back. I'm not so sure.

Watch his games. Really watch them. In the VFL, he picks and chooses his moments to give effort. He jogs along on the outside, waiting for a touch in space. He can be dynamic and even makes 2nd/3rd efforts sometimes, but at other times it's half-hearted attack and a single effort. He has the demeanour of a guy who knows he is too good to be playing VFL but he doesn't improve.

That's why spuds like Aarts or Castagna, who always give 100% effort, get picked ahead of him. That's why we persist with a less talented player like Ross, because he listens and learns and improves.

This is all an observation from the outside, watching the guy closely (on livestream) in VFL games. I've got NFI if I'm right, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest he is not getting a game because of effort and attitude.

Yes I agree in part. I thought for the good part of the year he played with a lot of enthusiasm and seemed pretty involved, but as the season went on his effort came and went a bit. Reckon he was not happy about not getting gig, as you say he probably knew he was too good for the VFL, but when he did have good games, he wasn't promoted. I have gone on about this for half a season watching the VFL and I cant remember a player being treated like he was this year and don't want to go on about it again. I will be pleasantly surprised if he signs on again, but I'm not holding my breathe.

the flip coin to this argument is that PLayers lift when they play AFL, stack is one of those players that reach another level. its a disgrace a player of his talent in running around in the twos. See Cumberland for example.

Can confirm. Watched him live in Sydney playing in the 2s, again at Box Hill. His intensity and energy was exactly as you described.

Agree mate, the way some people carry on about fitness as if we are some suburban club or country club that trains twice a a week and Stacky calls up every Tuesday to say he can't make it, 'works too busy', or 'my car has broken down on the way' (which by the way, not even the dumbest of suburban coaches believes).
He trains nine months of the year in an elite environment, with highly-paid coaches and support staff watching over him. He's not ducking into the trees as the rest of the group run 10 laps, or going AWOL while they're running the Tan.
And then you have residual fitness. Doing that elite training, you don't lose your base overnight ... it would take months to go back to a mere mortal without doing anything.
