Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

I'm wary of judging a player just off a short clip, but there's a lot of Mitch Brown in his superior reading of the ball in flight compared to those around him. Wells likes this in his defenders so I'm not surprised they plan to turn him into one. Combine that with his clear top end speed and real athleticism and we've got a very very good development project to work with.

The real issue will be putting the weight on him without his body getting too many injuries, so he's a very long term prospect, but I like the choice.

That's sensibly, however if you watched the same clip as me, he never held one over head mark, and thats a worry given the whole idea is to show him at his best.

He didn't go for any did he? Superior reading of the play meant he was in the right spots where opponents were floundering.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

I still don't understand why everyone judges players based on their highlights videos

May be he wasn't reading the ball that well coming in.Happy to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.For Wells to take him with our first pick it would be Big Footy suicide for me to criticize him at this early stage.:D

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

l would have liked m talia has 8 more kgs on him and good at one on ones.
in the addy yesterday wells really rates next years draft.

I liked the sound of Talia, but I think his poor kicking put clubs off. Hamling sounds like he has a heap of potential, 194cm who runs around the ground like a midfielder. Sounds like Adam Goodes. ;)

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Interesting comments from Joel in the West today. Claims he rocks up to games 10 minutes before the start and doesn't eat right !! Reckons he is looking forward to giving it a crack and spending time in the gym...............

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Had a chat to Joel today. Seems like a nice bloke. Pretty softly spoken.

my thoughts exactly.
I realize this is all us outsiders have to judge them on at this stage but i simply choose to not judge and trust that wells has made the right call (again)

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

I don't understand how his marking ability can be judged from his highlights video anyway. There were only 2 or 3 marks taken, and the ball was delivered to his chest...

Is he required to sit on the ground and mark above his head? Or take a specky for the sake of it?

Agreed. A 91 sec video and he simply was not required to take mark via outstretched hands.

Yeah , think it's a fair bet that Wells and Co base their assessment on more than the Video package. Hell , reckon I might have been a chance with my Under 11's highlight reel..........

Having just spoken to someone who plays with him it turns out that he is actually a really good mark, great leap and takes em out in the dukes.

1 minute of research > youtube highlights reel

Remember this is a package put together from various games not just one afternoon to show him at his very best to the football world and after all the editing' they couldn't come up with one overhead mark to enhance his cause.(and wants to be a key forward)

That package wouldn't get him an interview at Grovedale.

Not one person on this board prier to him being drafted looked at that footage and put his name forward as a gee! reads the play well, this kids a must have.

Wells must have other information he is working on.

I think it's safe to say Wells didn't draft him based on a 1 minute youtube video

Like I said, somone who plays with him has said he is a great mark. Ill take that over the video anyday

Completely agree with this. The recruiting team would have spent countless hours analysing the players that we selected. Viewing in person, extensive video footage, interviews with the player + his team mates + his current and previous coaches, etc. I think it's pretty safe to say that any highlights package of any player in the draft will not do the player justice.

Remember this is a package put together from various games not just one afternoon to show him at his very best to the football world and after all the editing' they couldn't come up with one overhead mark to enhance his cause.(and wants to be a key forward)

You Pick One, I understand what you're saying about the footage being the best from various games. But consider the fact that it wouldve been compiled by people with a hundred or so highlights packages to put together, and therefore probably wouldnt be the best footage available (as why would you bother trolling around for amazing footage for every potential draftee?), wouldn't be the best editing (because why bother?). The person doing the highlights package wouldve found a few reasonably good clips of the kid doing some stuff, chucked it together and moved onto the next potential draftee. None of these clips are comprehensive, nor should we expect them to be - especially for a kid from Broome.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Sometimes its obvious to all that player has .."it". Sometimes what they can bring to the table is muddled and clouded by youth.

There is a lot of new born foal in this boy , bouncing around so light on his feet. So exuberant yet in the clip he looks like he is reliant more on his altheltism than any footy smarts. He reminds me a little of Mackie and Lonergan. So light yet he may be far more athletic than both of them. Its probably why the clubs has made noises about him being a potential backman. A forward can sometime be lumbering but a backman rarely can these days.

He took no marks on the vid. It means little except him being able to place himself in a position to take it on the chest. He must have reasonable pace and to be asked to take the centre bounce his leap must be there as well.

Lets assume for a minute that Wells knows what he is doing , if anyone can pick something out of this vague garbled mess of a draft it is he. There will be many misses , some probably from earlier picks than ours and on the other hand some later picks and maybe Rookie that make may pros look amateurish this year. Anyway..

Before any rash statements of regret or preference for others , why do we wait to see what he can do with our own eyes. Im sure he wasn't drafted for 2012 so he has plenty of time and the best system in the AFL to learn in.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Wells is the master. I remember in 07 I was underwhelmed by our first selection, one H Taylor if you don't mind... foolish me! In 09 I'd barely heard of Menzel... looked ok IIRC, but didn't jump out at me... again egg on the face there.
I've decided to reserve all judgement on any players that we draft until we have some benefit of hindsight. This selection is typical of Wells, and if he and Scotty are pleased with the selection then so am I :)

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Don't think Wells pulls such picks just to go down in history as the 'Guru Bob' of recruiters, or at least I would hope not,...... he must have had other information and vid footage to convince him to pull Joel first.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Our first player drafted in this years draft will probably end up being the last one who gets a senior gig. Our other recruits including the North Ballarat giant will all be physically more ready for AFL.

With the comments before from this young chap about rocking up to training and not doing any weights or eating right, it's a testament to his natural athleticism to even be drafted at all.

He may well be akin to a child prodigy who never studies before an exam, yet arrives at the test and still gets an A-. Or, who has been given 2 months for an assignment, has spent the last 2 months devoted to other things, and wings it on the last night before it's due having done no draft copies and very minimal research, only to get higher marks than 9/10 students.

This kid could be anything, if he puts his mind to it. I think he's going to be a gun and could well be a more athletic Andrew Mackie who hopefully can bulk up a bit more and have a few more bows to his string, if he can play both key forward and defence.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 32 - Joel Hamling

Of course Wells has more to go on than a short video.

We are not talking about what Wells has to go on. The point is we don't have much more than a video to go on. If you know the guy (or someone who does) great! Share the info and we will hope who ever provided it knows what they are talking about and they are trust worthy.

So unless everyone just sits at their keyboard saying nothing, we have to make our comments based on the clips.

No one should be stupid enough to think all we see on the highlights is all there is, but in this case you would expect a couple of strong, in your hands marks, wouldn't you? Esp' if he is a great mark.

We will see soon enough, but the speculation is what makes it interesting.
