Delisted # 8: Martin Gleeson - Not offered a contract, finishes his Essendon career on 97 AFL games

Kind of inevitable given his recent form and our range of options in his position. But still a real shame that injury prevented him achieving the career he might have had. Was a seriously good aerialist for his size before the ankle. Best wishes for the future Marty.

thought he'd play 200 games as a half-back stalwart after that match against freo in i think 2014. was stupidly composed, stepping around players, hitting up targets, backing himself to run with the ball. unfortunately things didn't pan out that way, not the least of reasons being how well redman, ridley, and hind have progressed. and then there's chaos that was our senior side under worsfold.

surely a team like north picks him up?

Was such a good story when he burst on the scene in 2014. Can remember the footage of him and Daniher on the bench being completely over the moon about playing AFL.

Disappointed that he didn't get to 100. He was a good enough player and seemed a genuinely good guy.

As others have said, injury and an unfortunate level of competition derailed his career. I'd go as far as saying that if we never recruited Ridley, Gleeson would be closing in on 150 games.

I hope he gets another opportunity.

Great bloke
great call
no composure and not physically competitive- should have never been picked in the final
the club is doing a lot right
i reckon he will be an asset to a local club
good luck

Does this feel like the wheels are turning from what the 'old' Essendon would do?

Circa 2010, Marty would have been kept toget him to 100 games and because he's a great clubman not what is in the club's best interests.

I always liked Marty, but this is 100% the right call imho.

Pre ankle injury he was becoming a very good player. Disappointed he didn’t get to 100 games but is probably the right decision.
Wish him all the best and if he doesn’t get another AFL job, I hope he goes to our VFL
team. Would be a good man to still have around the club.
It’s hard and brutal decisions like this that are needed to still lift us up the ladder. Still a few more to make in my opinion.

^Think people seriously underestimate how bad that injury was. He split his talus bone in half. Bruce Reid had only ever seen that injury once before.

Was becoming a seriously handy player for us in the second half of 2017, which ended in a very good finals game in an abysmal game against Sydney.

I think if the salary cap went back to normal along with list sizes he probably gets a look in as someone who can come in for a pinch for 4-6 games in a contending team. But I don't think he gets looked at, unfortunately. List spots seem to be at a premium.

I have no idea why, but I can see him so vividly in high-vis wear as our runner.

Obligatory -

Is the mark at the top of each page the marking incident which resulted in the injury?
